USS Discovery, NCC-71847

Stardate: 2368.04.10
USS Discovery, captain's ready room - 0830

Captain Noah Blair sat straight-backed in his chair as he reviewed the morning's reports. Refit and repairs were coming along precisely on schedule; he grinned, realizing that his XO would, if possible, derive even more satisfaction from that fact than would the captain himself. The Discovery had been moored here at Starbase 128 for twelve days, and Noah was well aware that he wasn't the only member of her crew who was itching to get back underway.

The comm sounded, interrupting the work at hand.

Lieutenant Ames' voice sounded over the channel. =/\=Bridge to Captain Blair.=/\=

"Blair here," Noah responded.

=/\=A message for you from Admiral Wellenberg.=/\=

Our new orders, one would presume? "I'll take it in here, thank you." Blair answered.

Momentarily, a weathered face and greying dome appeared on the Captain's console.

"Noah, good to see you again," the admiral greeted warmly.

"You too, sir. I trust that Janice and the kids are well?" Blair replied.

The two exchanged a few more pleasantries before business became the priority. "Noah, I have bad news for you, but good news for one of your men. I'm taking one of your best officers - Starfleet would like for Commander Gavison to take command of the USS Charon. I regret the haste; the man deserves a full ceremony with all of the trappings and pomp that go along with a promotion to captain, but his new vessel is needed back in service immediately."

Noah felt a momentary twist in his gut, but it quickly subsided. Kelsey Gavison had always been a superb officer; this eventuality was merely a matter of time. He'd miss the big man, but he couldn't begrudge him this honor so richly deserved.

"Aye, sir, I understand," Noah replied. "Any word on who his replacement will be?"

Admiral Wellenburg shook his head. "I know that the orders have been filed, but I am honestly unaware as to who has been assigned to the post. I understand that you are scheduled to remain at Starbase one twenty eight for two more days."

Noah nodded. "Aye, sir. Everything is right on schedule."

Wellenburg frowned as he stared down at a readout on his own terminal. "That's odd. I see that your replacement is due prior to your departure, but the request is incomplete - I do not have the new commander's name or serial number."

How strange. "No matter, Admiral - I'm sure that we will be acquainted soon enough," Noah replied.

"Indeed," Wellenburg spoke by way of reply. "Give my best to Captain Gavison. Godspeed to you on your own upcoming missions."

Blair dipped his head in acknowledgement. "Thank you sir. The same to you."

Momentarily, the admiral's face disappered, leaving the Starfleet Command logo behind. Noah smiled and tapped his commbadge.

******************************

Gavison had been surprised by the announcment, but he shook off Blair's apology as to the lack of a formal ceremony. "What difference would it make?" he had asked. "This way, we don't waste half a day shaking hands and posing for photo ops."

Blair couldn't help but grin - the man was largely right. Still, he insisted on giving Kelsey what recognition he could. Noah keyed the comm and addressed the entire ship.

"Now hear this. As of 0845 this morning, Kelsey Porter Gavison has been promotoed to the rank of Captain, on the authority of Admiral Thomas Wellenburg, and will immediately assume the command of the USS Charon. On behalf of the entire crew of the USS Discovery, I wish to extend him our gratitude for his exemplary service, and we send our warmest wishes for the safety and success of his future endeavors."

And then, it was simply a matter of packing bags, filling out the appropriate transfer orders for Sherry (as if Noah would allow the man's wife and child to remain behind), and seeing him off.

Less than three hours after the orders came in, the Charon was already underway, assigned to an escort mission some light years away.

I rather figured that since Chantelle had become a full NPC by the last go round, it was silly to not get a warm body in that spot. Also, it seems liek the timeline fits just about right for her to be off ship now.

I have already accepted your base character concept, Dragonblood, so feel free to PM your particular questions to me. I'll be more than happy to help you flesh out the service record and other more "technical" items.

Looks like commander Avanti will be returnign to Discovery to take the XO spot. Sorry for the confusion, Admiral! You are of course highly wanted, so please adjust your concept a bit and let me know.

I have edited the first post of the thread to show the data we collect on characters. You don't have to provide all of it to start with, and I'll be happy to help with the trek-specific stuff (like service record and such).

Do make sure that I have approved your base character concept before you create all of this info!

Wow, we are quickly shaping up!

Addy, feel free to bring someone else to the fray. We still need an XO, a sciencey dude, an ops guy... you could certainly do security, or another office in any department. Up to you, man.

Well, folks, I have posted a tentative roster on the first post of this thread. I have full characters for Eol and Alacrity, and solid concepts from Dragonblood and Merideth, so those slots are pretty much taken.

All the other department head slots are available, as are additional roles in any department (if you'd prefer to play one of those). I did not list a Chief of Security, since MacTavish historically worse both hats, but if someone wants to play this, it is quite workable to have both.

Nice interest so far!

Cap'n Mac had to control his temper a bit. Mac from "back in the day" would have pushed several Romulans out of the nearest airlock.

Yep, as a commander, Mac was really just a teddy bear.

Eyep... he's so much fun.

Thsi would be six years before the first ST:OP post. 2368 is the year.

It would actually be a few years BEOFRE ST:OP (Eol's game).

This would be back in the days before MacTavish got his first command.

Subject: To boldly go (again) where no one has gone before...

As you may know, I am the webmaster of the RPG site, yet I have not been actively involved in an RPG for months. This may continue; right now, I am merely testing the waters, so to speak.

I have participated in three Star Trek games here at the Inn - all three have been immensely enjoyable, but all three have fizzled (largely due to the GM flaking out - warning! I was that GM twice). Despite that fizzling, these games have been the type that cause me to anxiously await every post, and they have brought out some of the best creative writing the Inn has seen.

Trek gaming is basically regulated freeform - you may post pretty much anything you like, but while you may create your own subplots, you are expected to follow the main storyline that the GM (who plays the captain of the ship) has laid out. Wouldn't be a lot of fun to have everyone warping the ship off in space, causing catastrophes that affect everyone, etc.

Anyway, my post here is to gauge interest in possibly reviving the U.S.S. Discovery (a Galaxy-class vessel). I would set this game a good two years further along than the last plot to fully allow for a reset of the crew where needed... though old veterans are OBVIOUSLY encouraged to return. This would place us at around season five of Star Trek: the Next Generation.

I'd like to do two posts per week, if we can manage that - but no less than one post per week. Please note that you don't have to know vast amounts about Star Trek to be able to play (though sure, it helps)... I can be geek enough for all of us, and I'm happy to help out with characters, questions, etc.

Also, please note that Trek posts are formatted a bit, but we can cross that bridge later, if the interest is there.

To play, you'll need to come up with a character concept and bio, and I'll need to approve it. Almost every department/specialty is available (save marines... we have none).

Okay, that's enough for now. If there is sufficient interest, we may try putting together a game.

Crew needs:
First Officer - Alacrity
Chief Tactical Officer - Eol Fefalas
Chief Science Officer - Reralae
Chief Engineer - Merideth
Helmsman - Dragonblood
Chief Medical Officer - Night Monkey

Crew that would be really nice to have:
Chief Operations Officer - Baron
Chief of Security
Ship's Counselor - Glory of Gallifrey
Additional officers in any department - emybear450, Ion Kired, Dragon Mistress

I have been asked what I'm looking for. We use a standardized form for character data. You don't have to provide everything at once, but here are the items on it:

Name
Species (usually human)
Gender
Date of Birth (current year is 236
Birthplace (city and state/province, or colony/starbase, etc)
Height
Weight
Eye Color
Hair Color

Physical Description

Family and Background info

Education (college, starfleet academy info, etc)

Service record (date of promotions, commendations, etc. I can help as needed)

Medical History (if anything significant to report)

Commendations and reprimands (if any)

Special skills or ratings (if any)

Personal Bio (as detailed as you like)
