DM's note: sorry for being such a flake!

18th Olemra (Thirkday), 452 E.R. - evening
Fin and Feather tavern, Filwood, Ertain

Tessa grins, perhaps even blushes a little at being remembered by the local hero. "Aye, I've grown a bit. As have you!" she adds with a wink.

"As for Martin..." her voice trails off. "He's an odd fellow these days, he is. Spends a fair part of his time alone, muttering to the wind. If you give 'im half a chance, he'll bend your ear for ages with tales of dreams and signs." She glances around the room and lowers her voice just a bit. "Some folks say he's slowly going mad, but I think that's just mean. Martin would never hurt a soul... he's just a bit of a mooncalf, you see?"

She straightens and shakes her head, sending flame-colored curls bouncing. "Enough 'o that. It's good to see you, Isaac, truly it is. You and all your friends, of course." She glances askance at Neri, but says nothing directly. Upon recieving Shianna's request for a second bowl of stew, she laughs heartily. "Such an appetite! Of course I'll fetch you two bowls, lass!"

The next hour or so passes with good, simple food accompanied by Gregor's brown ale. Not too bitter, but dark, with a full flavor, the cold beverage goes perfectly with the stew. While Tessa is cheery enough, her expression slips a time or two, allowing the cracks in her facade to show. The rest of the taven's occupants don't even bother to try - they are clearly worried, sullen, withdrawn.

Even so, it is glorious to be inside, out of the sticky, damnable mist. You fill your bellies with food and drink, while Aryan overindulges just a bit - two quick tankards of Gregor's later (coupled with too little food), the small mage finds herself more than a little tipsy.

Even so, Aryan is the first to hear the bumping, though truth be told, she originally attributes it to another of the interesting (some good, some bad) sensations brought on by the drink. Quickly, though, the bumping sound turns to pounding upon the door of the tavern, and it becomes clear that the sound does not, in fact, originate within the ale-haze surrounding Aryan's mind.

Moments later, the banging sound spreads to the shuttered windows of the building. From the sound of it, something is attempting to break its way inside the tavern!

I oversimplify, but it boils down to this: decisions are made every day. Most decisions have some sort of consequence.

Trust me, I do not enjoy grounding - I miss having my party's mage in Buried Secrets.

We lose the memory of "Pretty in Pink Maximus"? Won't this retcon negatively affect the action figure collections of the demons?

"I...feel... a disturbance... in the Force!"

Meh, whatever works for the DM.

I killed off ONE of those characters. One of the other PCs killed the second, and the third fled the party.

So yes, three characters were gone, but only two to death, and only one was my direct "fault".

So there.

I've been warning you guys that this day would come. You like to call *me* the killer DM, but I knew somebody was gonna bite it, and not in a "oooh, I can go be with my ghostly girlfriend now" way, either!

I just figured it would be Arien. Roasted and served inside his tinfoil armor.

Not that such is anywhere near out of the question, still...

Tann - glad you enjoyed that part. Was fun to write.

Brom - cold? Best I can tell, it'll be several rounds before he starts to cool. BZZZZRRRT!!! Yowza!

Seriously though, you'll notice who the first one was to start beating the drum to raise him.

I thought that *I* was the guy with the killer DM record?

Provided we survive this, Arien can scoop the ashes into his helmet and either have Kilgim res Char, or carry the pieces back to town.

I mean, this isn't Audalis, we can get res.

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off
Subject: a moment of enlightenment

The encounter had already started off surreal enough - the demons knew Arien and his comrades by name and reputation. Had they not been enemies of the foulest sort, it would have been flattering to know that the party's reputation for good deeds had grown. As it was, it was simply a bit disturbing to think of demons playing with dolls styled after the knight and his friends.

The fight was joined, and predictably, the halberd-wielding demon flung lightning at Arien. Far less predictably, Winston unfurled his wings and took flight to avoid the attack, as well as those that followed. The heir to House Thedell almost lost his seat from the mere shock alone - Winston was a fine steed, of that there was no doubt. Arien had known the horse as a colt among his father's herds, had ridden him through countless encounters as an adventurer. How could he have not known?

"You... you can fly?" the young knight sputtered, even as bolts of lightning crackled dangerously close to him. Dumbfounded, Arien found himself continuing to speak to the horse. "Why didn't you ever let me know before?"

Having no firsthand knowledge of talking animals, Arien was unprepared for the answer. "Simple," Winston responded in a deep baritone. "You never asked." Despite having to perform aerial dodges to defy death itself, the steed made a whinnying sound that was suspiciously akin to a chuckle - he was clearly pleased with himself.

A moment passed in which the knight again came dangerously close to losing his seat - Arien never expected an answer from the mount. A bolt of lightning flashed by and suddenly, it all made sense.

The lightning bolt, clutched in a fist, was the symbol for Heironeous. Arien had devoted his life to the causes championed by the deity - chivalry, honor, valor, justice. These demons, monstrous servants of dark forces, have attacked innocents, and the god's own clergy have shirked their responsibilities to protect the weak. Arien and his friends were here to right that wrong, to drive this wickedness away. Now, to assist in the cause, the knight's noble steed had been transformed into a pegasus (or perhaps has always been one, waiting for this moment).

It was divine intervention of the clearest sort. The Archpaladin himself had chosen Arien Aston Thedell the Third to champion his causes. Though currently unrecognized by church or title, Arien had most certainly been designated a paladin in sprit by the patron deity of such holy warriors.

The young knight felt honor, gratitude, and a quiet confidence flow through him. His entire life has been marching towards this very moment; he simply has been unable to see it before now. "Thank you, Heironeous," he whispered in prayer. "I will not let you down."

Char took the demon's fixation on Arien as an opportunity, and struck true three times with arrows. The enraged monster turned his wrath to the ranger, striking him down with unholy lightning, then having the gall to joke about the brave man's death. Arien felt gutted at the loss of his friend - the gruff, kind woodsman had always been the most dependable sort of comrade one could ever hope for. Now, however, was not the time to grieve.

Filled with righteous fury, Arien struck the demon hard with his enchanted blade, but neither ensorcelled steel nor blue flame seemed to have any effect on the monster. This was a new situation for the freshly chosen paladin - he had encountered monsters before who were immune to various weapons, but magical weapons of the power focused in Liun'naur were usually sufficient to hit anything Arien had ever faced. The young man was puzzled at this outcome when he notced the arrow shafts fired by his slain comrade still jutting out of the demon's flesh - where they had clearly inflicted damage.

The servant of Heironeous sheathed his sword and leaned forward. "Winston, can you gain some altitude? It would appear that our enemy is vulnerable to wooden weapons - let us see how he likes an aerial lance charge."

If that did not work? Well, it was clear that the heavens had a vested interest in the outcome of this battle. Arien was certain that honor and valor would yet carry the day.

Pish tosh. If we handed out a custom title to everyone that hit 200 posts, I'd have to have staff that did just that.

I think that Admiral Bob has a decent guideline, there. Earn that title, Emy.

this was actually a present of Emily's - Noah kept trying to open it during the week before Christmas. Funny thing was, he didn't care alot for opening his own presents on Christmas morning.

Yeah, too many gifts.

Helping Daddy open one.

How can I not share this?

Taken by Mom before Christmas.

I was full of venom when 3e came out, and bashed it at every turn. But I'm older, wiser, and more apathetic these days. That, and I've accepted that fact that I'm a dinosaur.

I do see far fewer 4e apologists than there were for 3e; a lot of that, I think, is because of the truly fundamental changes that have been made to the system.

But if you like 4e, 3e, 2e, GURPS, TomJonesHomebrewAdventure, more power to you.
