Dragon Mistress, if'n it's alright with you, I'm gonna push your post back down the timeline an hour or so, max, to give the new security chief time to board the Cerberus - and involve him in the romulan arrival.

Normally, I wouldn't presume, but I already ran the timeline of "security chief arrives just before romulans" with the GM yesterday, back when you only had one post, and it didn't have a time attached.

Oh, absolutely! I'm not at all trying to come down on Dragon Mistress, or on anyone else.

The thing is, on things like this, unless the GM decides that there should be an exception made, we try to set up some standards - not the smallest reason being that I base the trek tools off of information we deem to be canon.

If you take a look at the roster, you'll note that we have rank patches set up for everyone. I have no graphic for a sub-centurion, you see.

A fantastic reference for such things is Memory Alpha - the star trek wiki.

Their ranks follow the ones I posted, except with the addition of Uhlan, which Eol had pointed out was omitted.

Edge of the dunes

The group makes their way across the dunes towards the lighthouse, which stands alone on a rocky promontory. Several hundred yards away, you can see the wooden tower constructed by the pirates, but at the moment, no movement is visible around it. Fortunately, the terrain between the lighthouse and the tower is broken by several large dunes - the kind that have apparently been here for some time, judging by the vegetation sprouting from them.

The lighthouse itself stands close to sixty feet tall, and is contructed of grey stone. A quick patrol reveals no pirates - or living things larger than birds - in the immediate vicintiy. An oaken door stands open in the front of the lighthouse itself, permitting easy access the the interior.

DM's note: assuming that you will want to explore...

The ground level consists of several rooms, the first of which is an entry hall - furnished with a table under which sit four pairs of boots. Several coat hooks sit empty in the wall.

There is a kitchen and dining area, as well as a pantry, also on the first floor. The pantry has been cleaned out of any usable supplies, and the kitchen cupboards are bare; all cooking an eating utensils ahev been stolen.

Following the stairs up, you find several empty rooms. One is a bedroom containing an adult sized bed and a bookshelf, the contents of which are scattered across the floor. Another is a workshop of some sort, with the sort of tools one would expect to find in the possession of a glassblower. Most of the items here are broken or badly damaged.

There is a sitting room, with two comfortable chairs and a small bag full of knitting supplies on the ground. Lastly, you discover the master bedroom. A double bed dmominates this room, and a wardrobe stands open and empty. A night table lies on its side, and clothes are strewn everywhere. The smell of death hangs heavy in the air - due obviously to the body of a woman that lies in the corner of the room. A large, dark brown stain covers the ground under the body.

Still more stairs lead up, to another floor. The first room you discover is an empty storage room (nothing inside but broken crates). Next is a playroom, with wooden toys scattered on the ground. Also are two heartbreaking discoveries - two children's bedrooms, each also heavy with the scent of death. Much like the master bedroom below, the wardorbes are emptied of their clothing (which lies scattered across the floor), and both contain rotting bodies. The younger child (perhaps six years of age) lies dead among scattered toys, the older (perhaps twelve) beneath a pile of his own clothing.

The top floor of the lighthouse houses the lamp itself; not surprisingly, broken glass shards of the mirrors lie scattered across the floor. The lighthouse lamp is damaged beyond repair, and any oil that may have been stored here has been carried away.

The lighthouse is, in short, a scene of desolation, despair, and death.

I believe the Charon is en route to Ds9 right now. That crew has been together for some time, as opposed to the Cerberus, which is newly staffing.

To my knowledge, we are posting to the one game thread only. Brom may want to do it differently, and if so, that's fine - we can always move a post to the other thread, if need be.

I am pretty sure that you need to flesh out your character a bit before you post, though I have no doubt anythign you do will be just fine.

Tann was using the info available to him - which, Vanadia correctly points out (and I had not thought of, myself!) that no one would have a real idea of the extent of the cold damage.

We can discuss this in circles, but I will back Tann up on this - while there certainly is more than one way to look at this situation, Kane by no means handled it wrong. I can't say for any certainty that he did NOT handle it 100% correct. The only thing that really should have possibly influenced Kane's decision was the fact that only two rangers had recognizable combat damage... and again, even I hadn'r realized I was metagaming the cold damage knowledge.

After medical care, Hatherford is nowhere close to being unable to stand a watch; can't say the sarge did wrong.

glad we're keeping this in the Q&A, not in game!

...the enlisteds get the short end of the stick, usually. So unless Kernan sees compelling reason to countermand Kane's order, it likely stands.

Blake could pull rank on Kane, as well, but as we discussed, she is not technically a part of this chain of command.

Truth be told, the medic's attention did you combat woundeds a WORLD of good, as referenced in my last status post. However, I was remiss in not posting a new one. Here it is!

LT Kernan: minimal cold damage.
PFC Pearson: mild cold damage.
WO Blake: minimal cold damaage, minimal combat damage.
CPL Hatherford: mild cold damage, mild combat damage.

CPL Hart: mild cold damage
SSG Kane: mild cold damage
CPL Johannsen: mild cold damage
SGT Lee: minimal cold damage

I am ruling that some of the cold fatigue is gone. A full night's sleep gets it all, but the kind GM is allowing some to go away, regardless.

In a considerably better mood, Rrowl stepped out into the corridor, the door behind him closing with a metallic whoosh. The Cerebrus’ new tactical chief hadn’t bothered to unpack, settling instead with casually tossing his duffel down upon the surprisingly satisfactory bed he found in his quarters. The kzinti’s tail twitched in a gesture of appreciation; it was almost unheard of for him to find a bunk wide enough for his girth, a fact that had resulted in more than one night spent curled up on the floor of his quarters as a proper size was requisitioned. Later, he would go about settling in, but for now, he was anxious to go on and get the security registration process out of the way. Steamrunners were warships, pure and simple, and Rrowl was ready to get a firsthand feel of the capabilities of his new assignment.

The ship was rather empty at this point, with a large portion of the crew apparently yet to report. Not surprisingly, that fact didn’t bother the kzinti in the least; he had learned to tolerate the company of humans, to even enjoy it in some cases, but most of the time, he preferred to be left alone. Rrowl had earned the respect of humans everywhere he had served, but made few friends; his own outlook was simply too different for most to feel comfortable around the big felanoid.

The new TAC officer reached the turbolift and ordered it up two decks, where he intended to examine his new duty station. His ears flickered slightly – he knew that, provided Jack MacTavish wasn’t already making the rounds – and making everyone’s lives miserable – Rrowl would likely find him close to the seat of his new command. MacTavish was probably as close to a friend as Rrowl had; he and the gruff Scotsman had spent many an hour sparring back when both served aboard the Discovery, and MacTavish had earned the kzinti’s respect as a warrior then, and later several times over during missions. If he had ever been intimidated by Rrowl’s size or physical prowess, the man had never showed it, and had given as good as he got more than once. The kzint’s ears flickered mirthfully as he recalled just how much of a dirty fighter Jack MacTavish was – which was naturally necessary when sparring an opponent half a foot taller and more than a hundred pounds of muscle heavier.

Quite frankly, Rrowl owed a great deal of his success as a Starfleet officer directly to Jack MacTavish, and the kzinti knew it. In the early years of his career, Rrowl had been viewed as an unquestionably brave, unquestionably competent warrior – but one with a simple lack of tactical imagination or understanding. He had been rightfully stamped as a typical kzinti – master of ambush, of the infamous “scream and leap” strategy, but incapable of anything more.

MacTavish, by example, had taught Rrowl that there was more to combat than strength or skill alone, that cunning and a well-crafted plan meant as much, or even more in the case of space combat. Working under Jack, first as assistant security chief, then chief of security, and finally, as a tactical officer, a seed was planted, and the kzinti had cultivated it.

No longer was he one dimensional. Rrowl had earned this assignment, and he knew it. Now, with the combat that would surely await them all, he would prove this fact to MacTavish, to Starfleet, to himself.

The door hissed open in time for Rrowl to almost run directly into the still gold-collared MacTavish. “Commander!” Rrowl exclaimed, coming to attention. “Er, rather, Captain MacTavish.”

OOC: any response…

Rrowl glanced around the almost empty bridge. “Lieutenant Rrowl, reporting for duty, sir. And if I may say so, I am pleased to be doing so.”

MacTavish would almost certainly have caught the hidden meaning behind those words – Rrowl believed in doing his duty, and would never question a commanding officer directly, but there were perhaps a handful of officers he would actually describe as being “pleased” to serve under. The kzinti’s statement was meant to reflect deep respect.

OOC… any response…

The moment of seriousness passed, Rrowl took the slight opening to prod an old comrade a bit – at least, as much as one could prod one’s captain. “Still in the gold, captain? I was unaware that uniform code had changed, sir. I would have expected command red on you.” Only the very tips of the kzinti’s ears twitched at all; a casual observer might have mistaken the motion as a reflex reaction to the bridge’s ventilation system.

OOC… Jack’s take…

Rrowl nodded. “I trust you have more important concerns at the moment, captain, so I will keep you no longer. I wish to run a diagnostic on our systems, and then need to attend to my department’s roster. If you need me, sir, I will either be here on the bridge, or in my office.”

The kzinti gave a salute, then moved out of MacTavish’s way en route to the TAC station. Sure that no one was looking, he allowed his teeth to be bared for a moment.

Ah, the tales we will tell when this cruise is done!

Subject: You just thought things were about to make sense!

May 9th, 2025 - 0034
Barracks, Antarctic Research Facility 36, Antarctica

The night passes without incident, with the military's infamous prepacked food the only hazard encountered. The sleep gained is not enough to fully restore you, but the borrowed bunks are far better than nothing - and the short rest is not at all out of the ordinary for what a ranger team is accustomed to enduring.

Shortly after midnight, Georgia time, everyone is up and ready to go.

Kernan relates the earlier discovery of the bloodstains and other battle signs, and soon, the entire team is witness to them en route to the observatory.

The hall to the observatory is somewhat odd; there are actually two sets of doors that must be openend to enter the room. This is by design, of course - when the domed ceiling is open, it can get insanely cold, and the second door was built as sort of an "airlock" against the elements.

When the second door is opened, further strangeness is triggered. The first - and most obvious - sign that somethign is wrong is the fact that the dark, heavy bloodstains stop completely, as if the bodies that were being drug simply vanished into thin air. Despite the indications on the floor that the bodies were copiously leaking fluid, there is not a simgle drop within the observatory itself.

Speaking of the observatory, you find that the large, domed room is very sparse, compared to the rest of the facility. The chamber is quite cold, and the circular shape fo the room helps to amplify the echoes of any sound.

The domed ceiling is currently closed, and a large telescope points towards the heavens.

The moment you step foot into the room, the sound of automatic weapons fire greets your ears! Two soldiers in U.S. Army garb duck for cover and begin firing bursts at you!
