Subject: chaos at the foot of the stair

Arien takes no joy in killing the Green; it occurs to the knight that the man is more than likely simply a man doing what he is told. Even so, the thought does not particularly influence Arien's actions one way or another - the code of knighthood holds that warfare is the flowering of chivalry, and thus, honorable combat is a desirable event, not one to be shirked.

Of course, this is far from textbook honorable combat; the Greens use their insidous poison crossbows, and in turn, Arien's comrades use sorcery. Steel on steel is preferable to such distractions, and Arien is glad to indulge himself in the pursuit of it.

As the Green dies beneath his flaming blade, three more enter - only two of them successful. There is no need to call out direction; each member of the party is doing what they do best. The knight moves to his next foe, intent on clearing this room of opposition so that the party can make their way up the tower, and to Alloryen's aid.

Arien is keeping his same strategy; if the commander is close enough, the knight will attack him, otherwise, he will methodically work his way through the Greens. He will not take advantage of a Green falling in the grease, however - he will only strike down those defeated fairly in battle (unless they give up said right by using other treacherous means, and it becomes necessary to kill indiscriminately to ensure the survival of his comrades).

Subject: well...

I just changed the code for the "Last five topics" to group them by topic.

In other words, no more multiples of the same topic up there. If the topic you are posting to is currently #2 on the list, the old way would put your post at #1, the old entry at #3, and drop something off the list. Now, your topic floats back to #1, but nothing drops. That way, more topics get exposure.

...with people using IRC. However, IRC is blocked by most company firewalls, which is a big reason why we don't run one here.

Subject: no such thing as elves!

Guys, please check your character sheets - there is no such thing as an "elf" in our game!

Yes, yes - sylvari are our elves. That being said, syls ALWAYS refer to themselves as sylvari. outsiders call them syls for short, perhaps.

Also please note that our half syl was raised among humans. I don't have every sheet right at my fingertips, but I'd wager he doesn't speak sylvari as well as the rest. Be careful of assumptions.

Forgive me for being such an anal DM, but by golly, if I don't have a "common" language, and I don't use generic "gold coins" for currency (don't you love exchange rates?), at least humor me by using the correct names of the races in my world!

The sla'kar regards the party with an unreadable expression for several moments before speaking. "You sspeak truth," it states in a lisping accent. "Came on sship."

It pauses for a moment, almost thoughtfully, before retrieving the thrown javelin from the earth. "Keeperss of the lighthousse have been misssing for one full moon and half of another. Other humanss build tower, firess, kill wariorss." With this last statement, her disposition shifts toward angriness.

The sla'kar fixes En'Aranthea with a reptilian stare. "Beware, ssylvari. Dirty humanss patrol often, keep watch, esspecially around tower. Sstrong wariorss they are, ruthlesss."

Okay, we've all seen them in our games - players who, for whatever reason (news to RPGs? juvenile? sharp as a bologna sandwich?) just don't seem to "get" the point of role playing games. The ones who strive only to kill the monsters, collect the most treasure, earn the most glory - to "win", even though such is impossible in a good RPG. The ones whose characters must be the fastest, the strongest, the best at everything they do.

That's right, the munchkins. Share your tales of munchkinism! Don't be shy, they can be your own (most of us grow out of it, eventually)... or they can simply be things you have witnessed.

Fingers in a jar? Cool!

Yes, your job is to make the game fun, but as DM, you are the final arbiter of everything - don't forget that. If your player says the game won't be fun unless they get a +15 vorpal blade, smack them and go on.

The finger story made me think of a character I once played. Adinar Dulorn, necromancer - and serial killer. Adinar was a genius, but was also disturbed (kinda have to be to WANT to be a necromancer was my line of thinking). Like so many real life serial killers, he liked to target attractive young women, who he would murder after torturing them for an agonizingly long time.

He's then collect pieces of them - some of which he would offer as bloody sacrifices, and a select two items he would keep from each and every victim in a leather pouch he kept on his person at all times. He had a habit of slipping his fingers in the pouch to caress those body parts during regular, everyday activities.

Adinar brought out pieces of my own imagination I was scared to admit existed!

Subject: I know I have mentioned this one before...

...but he is worth bringing up again.

Once played with a guy who had an incredibly strong, incredibly disgusting, half-troll berserker-type warrior.

Disgusting? Oh, yes. Said character liked release his carnal frustrations with the corpses of enemies he killed.

As DM, I finally fixed that little habit. The party once defeated several ghouls. Against any sense whatsoever, he proceeded to "enjoy" the corpse of a rotting, diseased, undead monster.

So I felt completely justified in ruling that his character contracted an extremely serious disease that caused his flesh to rot (as well as generally debilitating him via loss of ability scores, etc).

Once he managed to get a cure, he never again practiced that form of "recreation."

One of the very first games I ever DMed featured a guy who wanted to play a blue-skinned, half dwarf, half cloud giant. Yeah.

I wondered how such a match was even physically possible - chromosone differences and other such generic concerns aside - and he came up with "wizard experiment" to justify it.

Actually, the character himself didn't end up too strange, but the concept really was!

north of Crall's Shoal, western Antaron

With Jonas at the wheel, and Tod trimming the sails at his captain's command, the Arienne makes good time across the bay. The seas are fairly calm, and the breeze is favorable, both lending themselves to a smooth ride. Tod remains quiet, but perhaps a tad bit less sullen, while Joans himself is cheery and rather gentlemanly for a sea captain of any sort.

By late afternoon, the stone lighthouse can be picked out by a discerning eye, and within another half an hour, a tall, wooden tower can also be spotted perhaps a couple hundred yards away from the lighthouse - from the distance, the exact layout is still difficult to judge.

Instead of moving along the coastline, Jonas appears to be steering the ship towards the shore. "My apologies, but the reefs are quite thick up ahead, and I see no reason to risk my vessel any further. Tod will row you ashore in our lifeboat, and you can walk the rest of the way from here."

There is little to discuss; Captain Jonas bids you farewell, and soon, you are adrift in the sea with only the company of the brooding Tod.

Soon, though, even that is over as the boat bumps its way against the sandy bottom of the bay. "Time to get out," the deckhand announces gruffly. He gives you enough time to get your feet into the surf, and then he is off again, rowing back to the Arienne.

As you wade through the salty water and up to land, you discover a narrow beach that leads directly back into the edges of the swamp. Fortunately, it seems that you are nearly out of that terrain.

You can see that the vicinity occupied by the lighthouse is somewhat higher than where you have landed, and that the area between the swamp and the lighthouse beach is broken up by large sand dunes, patches of tall grass, and the occasional tree.

The swamp itself, from what you can see, consists of a surpirsingly fair amount of dry ground that runs haphazardly across the surface of the land, with various areas of still, bracken water breaking the dry land up. It should be possible to stick almost exclusively to the dry land if you are willing to give up a direct route for sure footing. There is a reasonable amount of undergrowth, and more than a few trees break jut out from the water.

The party spends the next half hour carefully picking their way trhough the swamp when suddenly, a javelin appears with a thud in the dirt in front of the group. "You will halt!" a voice calls out in oddly accented Apanonese.

From the brush steps out a brown-scaled sla'kar. Standing shy of six feet tall, it carries a shield made of some sort of hide on its left arm, and wears a blade of some variety on a belt around its waist. Other than that, the creature wears no clothing whatsoever. It's stance is easy, feet sprad just beyond shoulder width, long tail resting behind it. Aside form the javelin sticking out of the earth, the creature does not seem to be directly threatening, but neither does it seem fearful of your group.

Up to Damanil as to whether he will try to keep passing himself off as TDF. Up to Dime whether he surrenders or begins to keep score as to how many blaster rifle bolts he can eat.

Mercury and Lana manage to pull the critically wounded Jeena - as well as Jaal - into the speeder, and the young fringer throws the vehicle into drive and slams it into a path that will allow the rest of the party to jump in.

Which one of them does. Inexplicably, the blind jedi (was he blind to danger, as well?) moved to charge at the remaining attackers, rather than to take the safety of the speeder... and worse, Dime and Damanil seemed intent on staying around to provide support!

Mercury swings the speeder as close as he dares, and earns a blaster bolt into the left rear quarterpanel of the speeder for his trouble. The vehicle yaws dangerously, but the young man is able to regain control - luckily, it appears that the damage is cosmetic. For the briefest moment, he meets Caise's sightless gaze, and the jedi gives an almost imperceptible nod. Grimly, Mercury grits his teeth, grabs the wheel, and accelerates off toward safety.

The three are armed and old enough to make their own choices. For now, Mercury has the responsibility of getting the injured to safety.

Meanwhile, Caise busies himself with the business of ensuring the speeder's escape. His senses tingle once more, and this time, the padawan correctly interprets the signal as indicating another rocket firing. The jedi in training gathers the force around him and covers the ground between himself and the assailant in a remarkably short time. The man has no real chance to react as Caise's humming lightsaber neatly intersects the rocket launcher's barrel - as well as the active round within it.

There is a dull thud as the round explodes, throwing lethal shrapnel from the launch tube deep into the head and torso of the attacker. Later, his badly charred body will be discovered, but it is this molten shrapnel, not the burns, that kill the man. Caise is thrown back by the blast, peppered by the same shrapnel, and his head connects with a permacrete barrier at an awkward angle. The jedi's mind notes, in a disconnected manner, that everything sounds as if he is under water.... and then, he notices nothing at all.

Elsewhere, the fight takes another bad turn. Damanil's blaster rifle speaks and throws a burst of lethal energy directly into the chest of another attacker, who crumples to the ground. However, the sniper has regained his position, and only blind luck - or the will of the force - nudges the incoming shot to the side enough to avoid lethality. Even so, Damanil is spun to the ground by the blast, and it takes all of his effort to regain his feet.

Dime has problems of his own. Somewhat wounded himself, the twi'lek knows that to try to run across open ground in an effort to assist either of his fallen comrades would be suicide, considering the sniper on the roof and the regular blaster fire still coming from two different spots across the street. All thoughts of cover fire are gone, now - to survive, Dime will have to use lethal force. He does score a glancing shot on one attacker, but all three enemies still remain.

Suddenly, a loudspeaker bellows out in Galactic Basic, "This is the TDF! All armed parties will drop their weapons immediately or face deadly force!" A Dalian-class hovertank has moved into the street, and several armed soldiers in TDF uniforms and full battle armor move from cover to cover.

The sniper on the roof apparently thinks he has a shot, but is proven wrong as he is hit by two seperate blasts. He staggers for a moment, then tumbles several stories to the street below. The remaining two attackers drop their weapons and raise their hands, and the hatch of the hovertank opens. A lean, wiry officer - one Damanil does not recognize - steps out and surveys the street as the troopers move to surround the area. He keys his commlink. "We have casualties onsite - medteam requested ASAP."

Dime can feel the rifles poitned at him. "All right, sentient," the officer speaks clamly. "This fight is over. Drop your weapon now, or have it removed from your cold, dead fingers. Your choice."


Meanwhile, Mercury drives as far away as possible, as quickly as possible. When it becomes apparent that there is neither pursuit nor further immediate threat, he pulls the speeder into a parking area to think. The fringer glances back to the back seat, but Lana shakes her head, her lips pursed tight. Jeena is quite clearly dead.

Jaal's expression says he has realized this some time ago - the grime on his face is streaked by tears. He closes his eyes for a moment, then shifts his beloved's head from his lap to the seat so that he can move to the front. He then keys the comm panel on the dash of the speeder, and moments later, Gerald Darand's voice is heard.

"Father," Jaal breathes, "there has been an attack. We... father, Jeena is dead!" The young man's composure breaks, and the last word comes out almost as a wail. It is a heartbreaking scene, to say the least.

The voice on the other end sounds stiff, unbelieving. "What do you mean, Jaal? An attack, where? When?"

"Outside of Brod's, father. I'm not sure if they were after us or the jedi, but he stayed behind to give us time to escape..." Jaal cannot continue.

"WHAT?" comes an anguished scream. "They knew that transportation was supposed to be clear!" The last is followed by moments of deathly silence. "What I mean, son, is...."

But Jaal cuts him off. "You had something to do with this?" he cries. "Why would you do such a thing, father? Why?"

Gerald has grown very angry, and his voice shows it. "I told you to stay away from Jedi, boy! They bring nothing but trouble! If not for them, your mother..."

But again, Jaal cuts his father off. "If not for you, you bitter old bastard, Jeena would be alive! Hell is too good for you." Furious, the young man punches the comm panel, breaking it (and possibly his own hand). He then collapses into sobs.
