So, I'm pretty full when it comes to my gaming commitments.  I do not want to try to volunteer to take a main role.

However, once you get things fleshed out, if you want/need, I can create a junior officer/enlisted concept to help round out the crew.  Be somebody's assitant, help with another person to create coversation and side plots, etc.

Subject: the doctor is...

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 4, 1240

The turbolift door whooshed shot behind him as the Captain made his way down the corridor of deck four.  Naturally, Sickbay was the first thing that he came to; it made sense that the vrious Science labs and offices would be further from the turbolift than Sickbay and the CMO's office.  Momntarily, he found himself outside of the CMO's office, and pressed the chime.

OOC: assuming he gets a "come in" or the like...

Silas stepped through the open hatch to fid himself face to face with a dark skinned woman in Medical blues with her dark hair up in a ponytail.  He offered a smile and a hand to shake.  "Captain Silas Drake.  You would be Doctor Reine, I presume?"

OOC: assuming some affirmative

Drake nodded.  "I apologize for the delay in formally welcoming you, but I'm afriad that I was... unavoidably detained on Starbase 118 for the past few days."  Sure, that joke is old already, but she hasn't heard it yet, Silas mused internally.

With a wry grin, Silas carried on.  "I noticed that you are quite well traveled; it seems that you rarely stay with one ship for very long.  Hopefully, you and the Peregrine will be ideal fits for one another, and we will be able to keep you here for a longer stint than you seem to be accustomed to.  After all of the recent upheaval, there is little that would make me happier than knowing for certain who each of department heads will be!"

OOC: chance for Melody to add whatever

Drake stood up straight.  "Well, Doctor, I don't want to get in your way; I'm certain that you have a lot to do.  I did, however, want to personally welcome you aboard, and to offer mysef at your disposal if you are in need of anything.  I will see you at the staff meting at 1600; have yourself a great afternoon."

With that, the Captain left the office.

Subject: BING! An update!

Boarding the Alpha-19.87b Friendliness Hoverbot proves to be a minor adventure in and of itself. Not only have the seats been removed, but of course, the seatbelts are also gone. After all, seatbelts with no seats would be inefficient, correct?

The six clones, plus one jackobot, do their best to find spots with something to hold on to. Poor Steam discovers that the opportunity to drive this thing will be particularly challenging - the controls consist of various levers, knobs, and buttons (all unmarked), as well as three pedals. Operating pedals without a seat will be an interesting proposal.

"BING!" the hoverbot intones in a sweet, helpful voice. "Ready to commence hover mode!"

Unfortunately, none of the controls seem to do anything at all.

"BEE-DEE-BEE-DEE-BEEP, superior human," Jackie suggests. "Perhaps you should ask the hoverbot for assistance instead of squandering valuable mission time? I am certain that Friend Computer would not approve of the waste of any resource."

Cheeks burning, Steam follows the suggestion.

"BING!" the hoverbot answers. "Engine startup is a voice command. Would you like to commence startup?"

At the nominal pilot's affirmative response, the four fans blades begin spinning with a horrible noise (though one starts much later than the other three, causing one corner of the hoverbot to droop alarmingly while the other three rise).

Steam grabs the levers, pulls slightly... nothing happens. A harder pull results in an abrupt lurch to the left, which in turn results in a wince-inducing scrape of metal against the parking garage wall.

"BING!" the hoverbot speaks. "For maximum saftey and ride enjoyment, please ensure adequate clearance before initiating turns."

Once the hoverbot is pointed in the apparently correct direction, Steam coerces it to move forward - again with a lurch that threatens to drop at least two clones over the side of the vehicle. Once moving, however, the coveyance *does* have an enjoyable, smooth ride.

"BING!" the hoverbot cheerfully intones. "Next stop, the PLC!"

If anyone were to write an honest performance evaluation for the new, perfected Alpha-19.87b Friendliness Hoverbot, they would likely indicate that it both accelerates and decelerates in a smooth manner, and that the ride on straight paths is quite steady... even enjoyable.  Of the friendliness rating, one would have to objectively admit that this is, perhaps, the single freindliest bot that any of the Trobleshooters has ever had dealings with.

The controls, however, could use some serious adjustment. It would appear (much to Steam's dismay) that the left turn mechanism is easily twice as sensitive as the right turn mechanism, and that the vehicle lurches alarmingly when conducting any sort of turn.

This is first discovered after the armed forces clone is forced to nearly wrestle the vehicle around a right turn. Similar effort on a left turn has the hoverbot veering wildly into oncoming traffic, causing a teeth chattering crash with a streetsweeping bot.

The next complaint would likely be about the lack of both seating and restraints. It is quite difficult for anyone to maintain balance; even the most stoic of clones find themelves holding on with white knuckled intensity while the vehicle is in motion.

Ah, and the hover fans themselves... safety guards might indeed be appropriate. Said crash causes everyone to be tossed about, and both Slipp and Artie are launched completely out of the vehicle.

Slipp is fortunate enough to be thrown clear of the crash, and the greasy little man manages to tuck and roll enough to avoid truly serious harm (though standing up reveals a cracked rib or two to go along with various abraisions and contusions).

Artie, on the other hand, is not so lucky. The every cheerful, ever singing team Loyalty Officer produces some truly horrifying screams followed by choking, gurgling sounds as he falls, face up, into one of the unguarded hover fans. Some sort of safety protocol kicks in and stops the rotation of all fans after a good twenty to thirty seconds of chopping, but by that point, it is far too late to do anything for the minced clone.

At least the cessation of the blades stops any more blood and gore from being flung onto the surviving clones and/or the interior of the hoverbot.

"BING!" the hoverbot announces in its warm, feminine tone. "Standard event number six detected: one of the crew has unfortunately fallen to their deaths. Please stand by while a replacement clone is summoned."

At least the crash was with a streetsweeping bot. It efficiently begins to clean up the horrible mess while the team waits for the next incarnation of Artie-R-FCL.

Subject: a few things, again

1) Love seeing posts from both Enginers!  I still feel like this can be the source of some SUPERB rp chances.

2) Altaira: thanks.  Remember, this Trekverse is more military than what you se in TV shows.  And there are other subtle differences (currency still exists, for instance).  If you like, feel free to roll your eyes at me and chalk this up to me being an ass.

3) If you have questions about the ship, myself or Eol Fefalas will be happy to answer them.  Bromern Sal and Duncan74 are certainly also equipped to answer them.  But by all means, check page one of this Q&A - there are links and info provided there.  As a reminder, you can treat the ACTD pages as canon for our ship.  If you see a conflicting source somewhere else on the internet (even the venerable Memory Alpha) - note that unless I post otherwise, you can consider ACTD to be 100% accurate in all cases.

Topic: Star Trek: Veiled Chimera Q&A
Subject: a few things...

1) Love, love, LOVING all of the posting!  Keep it up!

2) It's always correct to check with a department head before controlling one of "their" NPC.

3) Regarding te use of "ma'am" - this came up in the last adventure.  Please check this, from the Draconis Fleet FAQ:

Superior officers are always referred to as "sir" (unless you are using the proper rank address below). This is regardless of gender. Likewise, the term "mister" is pretty universal, regardless of gender.  While it is technically okay to use feminine pronouns, you should understand that in Star Trek, some species have more than two genders, some have none, etc.  Ergo, "sir" and "mister" have lost essentally all gendering by the 24th century.

I had a player once who had a problem with this, felt like it was disrespectful - or that their chaacter did.

Here's what you need to keep in mind - Trek is in the 24th century; gender and race relations among humanity are not like they are today.  And then there are aliens.  There are at least three Peregrine crew members who come from species where there are *four* genders.  And then, even with many that have two genders, you have to unerstand - they likely did not develop along the same traditional gender roles as humanity had (even before humanity progressed).  If I'm not mistaken, we also have one crewmember from an asexual species.

So what you end with is that you need generic terms that work for any gender.  I suppose that we could have made up words...

"Yes xau!" the Lieutenant responded.  Turning to her right, she enlisted help.  "Xalpau Stevens, grab your tricorder and come with me."

But... c'mon.  Those words are "sir" and "mister".

"Yes sir!" the Lieutenant responded.  Turning to her right, she enlisted help.  "Mister Stevens, grab your tricorder and come with me."

I am as big a supporter of equality that you will find anywhere in the world.  But you just have to realize - in the make believe world of Star Trek, there is no gender attached to "sir" or "mister", at least not when used in the setting of Starfleet.

I'm the guy who tries to line up all of the details, who knows when the lowliest crewman is on duty, who actually works out how long it takes us to cover a make believe distance in our make believe ship going a make believe speed.  This is to say - I care about minutia, I try to keep things imersive in terms of the setting.

So do me a favor, please, and follow the pronoun convention.  I get it, it's weird to us in the 21st century to call a woman "sir" or "mister", but you get used to it, and it actually helps make the setting feel more "real".

Topic: The Corruption Hidden Beneath the Surface...
Subject: move out

The priestess is less than enthusiastic about accepting a hug from a strange man, priest or no.

After taking your leave, Kithran asks about for a library... and comes face to face with the fact that most people are, in fact, illiterate.  A small rural town such as this has no stores of precious books; the closest thing to a library was probably burned up inside of the mage's house.

After talking it over, it is decided to rest and heal up, then head out first thing in the moring to the west of Crandel, to see if the source of the undead can be found.  There is real concern over what might happen this night, but instead, it passes without incident.

13th Sempore (Valday), 453 E.R.

Dawn arrives, but the ever present mist is, if anything, thicker and more oppressive than before.  The sun can barely seem to illuminate the ground beneath, so thick is it.

The party leaves the town, and the mood is tense.  Kithran's warning proves to be inaccurate; there are no dead people, no undead.  Ideed, the road is quite empty.  At one pint, you do realize that it is deathly quiet - there are no bird or insect sounds, merely the occasional wind, and odd crackling noises here and there.

The day wears on, with the oppressive mist and silence bearing down on you.  Dusk begins to settle - rapidly so, due to the infernal mist, when you come across him.

A form lurches towards the party.  At first, you reach for steel, for it seems to be the shambling of the undead, but as the form approaces, you realize that this is, in fact, a wounded man.

We wears the leathers of a woodsman, but his shirt is torn, with bloodly gashes along his belly.  He is bruised and cut, and his beard is matted with blood.

"Gods be praised!" he exclaims when he draws near.  "Ye are livin' folk!  Please, 'elp me!  Me wife and boys, they're in tha cabin, but tha dead 'ave crawled from the ground, an' are tryin' to drag us down wit' 'em!  The 'ad me, nearly killed me, but I go' away, went fer 'elp, I did.. gods be praised, ye lot are 'ere!  Please, there are too many fer me, I canna save them meself!  Please, I beg 'o ye, I'll do anythin'... please save me family!"
