Anytime someone decides to creatively use grease in combat, I cringe for the sheer dark potential the situation has. Add the floating table, plus charging melee fighters AND missile into said melee?

Could have gone so hilariously wrong, indeed!

I am stunned! Arien's ridiculous armor class, coupled with his shield that's supposed to make him nigh-unhittable to missile attacks, HAS ACTUALLY WORKED! Now, I am truly scared... I wonder if the DM has some sort of cursed exploding ballista bolt prepped and ready to fire down a narrow corridor...

Note to self: stop giving the DM ideas.

Ahem.

Nice combat scene... the exploding table and (actually effective) grease spell were nice touches.

Captain Jonas glances at En'Aranthea out of the corner of his eye before grinning in a bemused manner. "Very well, then... ten levens it is."

However, when the sylvari maid fishes out the silver and places it in his hand, he frowns. "Milady, I mean no offense, but the coins you have are Corian brissans - and though they are a lovely sight for my eyes, the ruffians that pass themselves off as merchants here in this port will not honor them as they will levens. I must insist on three per head if you'll be paying in Croian currency."

DM's note: assuming some sort of deal can be reached...

The captain smiles and bows. "We'll be ready to set sail in an hour or so, so by the time you stable your steeds, we should be ready to go."

Fortunately, the party finds little trouble in procuring stabling for the horses. After all, these are fairly fine specimens of horseflesh; if their riders never return, the beasts can be sold for a tidy profit. A mere two brissans is enough to obtain stabling for a couple of nights, with the understanding that a longer stay will demand additional pay.

True to his word, Jonas has the Arienne ready to sail in an hour, and he welcomes the lot of you on board. Tod, on the other hand, is quiet - even a bit sullen - and seems to choose to simply stay away from you.

"All right, then," Jonas speaks with a grin. Next stop, the lighthouse!" The sails are hoisted, and the ship smoothly departs the docks of Crall's Shoal.

I was not expecting Caise to charge off after the baddies in the face of everything that's going on!

That being said, the party splitting up is not necessarily a bad thing, provided this is a short term deal.

I will point out that jedi command a certain amount of respect, even on Taanab, so if Caise manages to not get his fool self killed, he might be able to talk his way out of trouble with the TDF. Might.

As for the rest of you - provided the speeder doesn't catch a rocket or a lucky blaster bolt, it represents a pretty sure escape from the current trouble. On the other hand, feel free to stay and fight if you wish... don't mind me!

If you live through the firefight, the TDF might kill you. Or arrest you and imprison you for inciting a riot. Or they might question you and let you go. Or they might help the wounded (tries to keep a straight face). Or...

You get the picture. You guys are the players, go whatever direction you please!

Nope, sorry, not in this game. If you want protection against the cold, bulky layering is the answer.

Realistically, bulky layering would be the answer anyway, I fear. this isn't 30 degree weather. This is -30 degree weather.

May 8th, 2025
WhiteHorse Military Base, Antarctica - 1236

Major Carrolton looks none too pleased regarding the news about the scramjet, but waves away any mention of assitance. "I'll let the tech goobers Stateside know about it. Good enough that you made it in one piece."

Monty asked for recent satellite intel, which Carrolton seemed willing enough to give. "Nothing new, as far as movement and such - still no signs of life. Weather looks like it'll hold for a couple of days, at least, once this little storm blows over."

A small smile tugs at the major's mouth. "Oh, and just so you know - Washington decided you needed a couple more guns. They beat you guys here, their flight wasn't as long." He produces two manilla folders, with the labels HART, CPL GABRIEL JAME and PEARSON, PFC DENES. A quick inspection reveals billets of demolitions and grenadier, respectively. "They'll be waiting for you in the barracks. Good luck, rangers."

Arrangements are made for Inga to meet with the CMO onsite, and the team is dismissed for the short break prior to go time.

****************************

A Private Chogan is tasked with showing the team to the barracks, and the young man asks a lot of questions. He seems to know the mission's destination, and casually mentions that there are several strange objects stored in the station's hanger that he knows were retrieved from ARF36.

The barracks are about what one would expect - dingy, cold, and drafty... though a great deal more hospitible than the swirling wind and snow outside. Despite the knowledge of what would be encountered, the party finds the drastic climate change from Georgia in the late spring to be nothing short of fantastic - and not in a good way!

As promised, two addiitonal rangers, gear at the ready, snap to attention in the barracks. Truly a study in contrasts, these two - Corporal Hart (the demo specialist) is clearly pushing the small extreme of Army height regs, while Private Pearson (the grenadier) is a bear of a man, well over six feet tall.

"Well, here you are," Chogan states. "Hang out here, or see the sites on the base.... up to you. They'll call as soon as your chopper is ready."

With one assailant taken out, you are down to four visible enemies (counting the two reinforcements).

That you can see... the source of the artillery is still unclear.

Damanil knows that a TDF riot team is a full squad - twelve to sixteen men, and usually a well-trained unit. I do not know if he would share this info, but if Raven is unable to post, assume that he at least warns the party that serious trouble is coming.

More blaster shots rain in from across the street, but now, the party is ready for the conflict. Caise's lightsaber springs into emerald life as the padawan places himself between the civilians and harm's way, while Ziv, Dime, and Damanil ready weapons of their own and begin returning fire.

Lana and Mercury respond without hesitation to the jedi's command, and rush to the side of the fallen Jeena. Worldlessly, the pair each get a grip under a different arm, and move to drag the grievously wounded woman to safety. The scent of burned flesh hangs heavy in the air, and Jeena is completely limp.

The sniper on the far rooftop takes aim and squeezes his trigger, but reflexes aided by the Force are too quick even for energy bolts; instead of flesh, the deadly bolt finds humming green energy in its path as the bolt is easily deflected into the pavement nearby. Ziv fires wildly, and his own goal is achieved as one of the attackers takes cover. Another assailant cries out in pain as Dime lands a return shot of his own, and the sniper on the roof is forced to duck away from a shower of debris as Damanil's own shot comes very close to removing him from the roof.

Jaal is hysterical, unable to see anything but the bleeding form of Jeena. Numbly, he follow Mercury and Lana, but seems unable to render any sort of help.

Caise feels his senses screaming a warning, and he cries out "Get down!" A moment later, there is an odd humming, an instant before a rocket smashes into the side of the mercantile, knocking a sizeable hole into the permablock wall and filling the air with thick, acrid, black smoke. This time, the group is prepared, and no one loses their footing. However, things begin to look even more bleak - at least two more enemies have opened fire across the street.

Frantically, Ziv scans the street for a speeder to hijack, but the attackers are smart - they have waited for an opening to fire, so as to reduce the amount of available cover. Unfortunately for the party, it also appears that no citizen is foolish enough to drive their vehicle into a live firefight!

The fight continues, with one of the attackers popping his head out just in time to catch a lucky shot by Ziv directly to the face, and Dime himself taking a glancing shot to the leg.

However, the fates have not completely abandoned the party - the garage door opens to reveal the welcome sight of Jaal's ancient SoroSuub 45. As gently as possible, Mercury and Lana pull the still form of Jeena up into the speeder and usher Jaal inside, and momentarily, Mercury finds himself at the controls.

Meanwhile the emergency TDF frequency squaks to life on Damanil's commlink. Disturbance by Brod's Mercantile, comes the report. Active firefight in progress. Multiple fighters on both sides, be advised, one combatant appears to be a jedi. Casualties reported.

A moment later, a reply is made. Roger that, HQ. Riot team Theta-Theta-Two in route to respond. ETA five minutes.

The response by headquarters is chilling. Acknowledged, riot team. Both supressive and lethal force are authorized.

His mind made up, Arien strode through the shattered hallway with little thought to precaution or concern. Methodically, he made his way ahead without pausing for such trifles as doors or similar physical obstacles.

They burst into a room at the foot of the tower to find a nest of the cursed imperials involved in whatever mischief they were doing. With so much adrenaline already in his system, the knight hardly felt the rush that combat usually brought; instead, he found himself viewing the Greens as another mundane obstacle akin to the rotting doors of this place - something to be quickly swatted aside in favor of the real goal ahead.

Carelessness like this could easily cause his death, or the deaths of one of his friends, and even as Char uncharacteristically barked out an order, Arien realzied it, and felt his cheeks burn with shame. Fair enough, the party would risk their lives on this madman's quest, but there was no need to take unnecessary risks and end up dying before the real danger was even faced.

With a quick smile of gratitude to the ranger, Arien fell into formation with the other warriors of the group and raised his blade to attack.

Arien is looking to simply kill, kill, and kill some more. If close enough, he will target the commander first, as is his typical operating proceedure, but if not, he will attempt to work his way to the man, one opponent at a time. He will fight agressively until all enemies are routed/killed unless an ally goes down first, in which case, he will move to a defensive position above said ally until healing can be given to them.

12th Pfier (Fallday), 452 E.R.
Town of Crall's Shoal, western Antaron

The party sets off in search of a captain willing to take the lot of them to the lighthouse via boat. The universal feeling is that the less time spent in the swampy land between here and the lighthouse, the better.

While Barl clearly knows what he is talking about - by the time you reach the docks, they are mostly devoid of vessels - he had no way of knowing that not everyone would be out on the water today. One fishing vessel is moored almost at the center of the row of docks, with two men - one young, one old - scurrying around and over her.

"For the love of the mother, lad, can you not get it right?" the older man bellows. His accent is clearly not local - an observant ear would place his Apanonese with a Corian accent. Despite the harsh tones, he annunciates very clearly, as one might expect to hear from an educated man.

The younger man pulls hard on a rope, and something occurs which seems to please the older one. "That's more like it, then! This day's wasted for sure, but now we'll be ready for the morrow, after all."

He glances down at the party, and gestures, as if to doff a hat. "Hail and well met, mellonea! Captain Jonas Thirsef, at your service." He glances at the younger man. "Tod, finish up while I speak with these people."

Nimbly, he drops to the deck below and approaches the group. "Alas, Shinara has not smiled on us of late - we've been forced to replace a mast on the Arienne. What can I do for you?"

DM's note: assuming you explain your purpose...

Captain Jonas shakes his head. "The lighthouse? Indeed, I could take you there - we'll be ready to set sail within the hour, and I'm sure that we can agree on a reasonable fee. Perhaps this day won't be wasted, after all?" He grins, and the expression causes the lines on his weathered face to deepen even more.

"However," he explains, "as you can see, the Arienne is not large enough to carry your horses, as well - you'll need to board them in town. Truth be told, it might not be such a terrible idea if you plan on coming back from the lighthouse overland... much of that terrain would be difficult on a horse, even during the dry season."

He shrugs his shoulders. "But, it's up to you. You may be able to charter one of the larger boats this evening, but most of the chaps here aren't likely to make you the sort of deal that I will - they stand to make more money fishing than ferrying, if you can understand. I might not be willing myself, but we've lost the morning already."

The captain scratches his chin. "How about three levens per head? I think that would be a fair price."

Shoulda put this in the game thread itelf, I guess.

If you get up, you'll be able to immediately spot at least three hostiles at various positions - two at angles across the street, one on top of a building across the street. the one on top of the building has a rifle (if Damanil cares to study it, he'll note that it is a NICE military-type distance blaster rifle. Think energy sniper).
