Noah is a lot of fun... and has discoverd the computer. He is difficult to hold if you are sitting at the computer desk, because he wants to play. He'll bang delightedly on the keyboard. Donna has found some simple games on the internet that are made for babies, and he LOVES to play them.

But you couldn't see a single star last night in Aabama due to the cloud cover. I was really looking forward to the eclipse, plus a nice peek at Saturn's rings... but it wasn't meant to be.

Subject: another "kid" movie

We went and saw The Spiderwick Chronicles this past weekend. Well worth the price of admission!

My daughter has read all of the books, and had no complaints, so apparently, it follows them pretty well. The effects were nice, the acting was good, and there was plenty of humor to keep it fun.

I could quibble that the older sister's fencing skills seemed to translate unrealistically well to slashing swordplay, but yeah, I'd be quibbling. Boy, the girl in the end looks awfully big for six... *smack*. Shut up and enjoy the movie, Olan!

Seriously, a lot of fun... the hobgoblin was great. I can tell you, in good conscience, to see this film.

HVAC is a good field. And less than $4k to pay back for an education is WORTH IT.

And yes, I agree with your picks for guard duty - I was hoping you'd leave the inactives behind.

Maybe not traditional romance to everyone, but a couple years back, my wife gave me a baseball glove for my birthday... inside of the glove were tickets to a Cubs-Cardinals game at Wrigley Field. Being a lifetime Cubs fan (who lived in Alabama, not Illinois), that was a huge gesture.

Aw, c'mon... "Let;s split up and search for clues!" Make sure to go into dark, scary places alone.

I think the looey is concerned that these two might shoot you in the back if somebody doesn't keep an eye on 'em. Besides, you guys felt pretty good about two four man fire teams; now, you have a big six man team with a two man reserve.

Or something.

I realized I had left out one important piece - gender. Given names can now be specified as male, female, or either.

I have given this option for surnames, as well, though surnames are generic among almost all cultures. However, a few are not... "Garnsdatter" and "Graelsson", for instance, in a viking-esque naming system.

Well, looking at the situation again, your coldgear will certainly do the job... so disregard that silliness by me.

And yes, you could theoretically retreat through the ceiling. By the looks of things, the observatory has not been used in some time, but you should be able to open the ceiling... and if nothing else, toss a rope up to climb.

Subject: great idea!

When we were on vacation, I picked up a book that I normally would have left on the shelf - The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell. This one is historical fiction, a genre I wasn't overly familiar with.

It is the story of Uhtred, the son of a minor noble, set against the late 9th century in England. This is the first book of a series written to give us insight into Alfred the Great, and features some truly outstaning writing. I particularly enjoyed the depictions of the Norse invaders, and of life among them.

I cannot recommend this book enough!

The looey wants to stay in the presumably defendable observatory. The plan is to post two guards to stay with the station troops while th rest of you explore. I have pointed out that it is cold here, due to the uninsulated roof; not deathly cold, per se, but you'll have to take measures to keep warm.

Kane is against staying here, feeling that the defensibility could mean a deathtrap.

I need to know if you are indeed going to use the observatory as your base of operations, and who you wish to post to guard duty. A revised marching order would be nice, as well, but I can whip something up if you prefer.

Topic: The Official Red Dragon Inn Name Generator thread
Subject: here's a start

Here are the principles I'm going to work with. Please, by all means, comment and criticize!

All names will be organized first by race. If you are generating a khord (dwarf) name, you will not want sylvari (elf) names.

I see the input interface as being a tad tricky; to start with (and possibly forever), I will limit access to this portion of the tool.

Names will be divided by given (first) names and surnames (last names). When you enter a name, you'll need to let the system know which you are entering.

A name will consist of x number of syllables that the user will define. A name may optionally use a prefix and/or suffix, as well.

The system will save the name as a whole, flagging it as using a prefix and/or suffix, as well as a count of the other sylables used.

Now, when a regular user asks the system to generate a name, the following things happen.

1. The system decides how long the name should be, by looking at the syllable counts of the names in the database. If 50% of the names have two syllabes, 20% have three, and 30% have one, you have a 50% chance of getting a two syllable name, and so on. The chances of getting a name with a prefix or suffix are similar (syllable counts will still be enforced).

2. Syllables (and, if needed, prefix and/or suffix) are chosen at random and assembled into a name.

If we go by Alacrity's given examples, first names use no prefix or suffix; they are simply single syllables, for the purposes of the name generator. Likewise, to make it work like he has illustrated, all surnames will need to be entered as a prefix and suffix, but will have no other syllables.

So, you'd get a random syllable for first name, followed by a randomly assembled prefix and suffix for a last name.

I expect a lot of growing pains before this works right... but maybe I'll be happily mistaken. I do know that great care will be needed in the setup to ensure that we get "good" names back.
