Subject: odds and ends

Ertainian wine - especially from the Lockshir Orchards in souther Ertain - is considered to be excellent, though it will not touch sylvari vintages. Local wines will run you a silver brissan or so per glass, Ertainin stuff around five times that price.

Sorry, Tann - this crowd is motly sailors and such, no real worship prospects here, unless you want to maybe try persuing Marjie.

The barmaid answers En'Aranthea's question with a grin. "Aye, lass, dilap's a fish! Right tasty, too, if ya eat it fresh. Doesn't keep too well, though, even if ya salt it... but it makes decent jerky, funny enough."

Marjie inclines her head at Val and Tal. "Not a drop of syl wine 'ere, I'm afraid, but we have some local stuff for sure, and maybe even a bottle or two from Ertain in the cellar. It's a sight pricier, o' course... up to you."

After taking everyone's orders, the barmaid saunters off, giving En'Aranthea a chance to excuse herself to speak to the barkeep. The man glances around the room before responding, though he never stops polishing the glass he is holding.

"Aye, I know Luinen. Pointy-eared bastard owes me twenty royals, 'e does!" He keeps his tone friendly and grins before lowering his voice a bit. "Truth be told, I expected him no later than the fourteenth of Brightstar, but his ship hasn't docked yet. Strange enough... Luinen's usually on time. Not a single ship from Bayris in the last month, matter 'o fact, which is more'n a bit odd this time 'a year."

You know what's really awesome? Walking outside to get into your vehicle and discovering the right front tire is flat, and the right rear tire is only at half pressure! Especially cool when you get to jack up your heavy SUV with one of those neato factory crank jacks on your sloping driveway, since your floor jack isn't quite tall enough!

I was thinking seriously about running something akin to a simple dungeon crawl in a sci-fi setting. Any of you remember Grey's space marines game? I was thinking of something a bit like that, perhaps.

Freeform isn't truly right; we'd have to have some kind of stats, but that wouldn't be main focus. I wonder if there would be any interest?

I love it when the local police decide to start enforcing rules that I have never seen enforced in my lifetime. After all, they need something to do, right?

Note: This is in response to the fact that my son has been told he can no longer ride his go cart on the road in our neighborhood. Yes, it is technically illegal - it is a motorized vehicle without a tag. I have never in my life seen this enforced. So we ride on trails through the woods now.

Salty Dog Tavery, Crall's Shoal

It is not difficult to locate En'Arantheas's destination - the main cobbled street that leads to the docks takes the party directly past a weathered wooden building with a sign depicting a dog lying on its back, legs in the air. Beneath the picture are stenciled red Apanonese letters that read "SALTY DOG" - for those than can comprehend them.

The party takes advantage of the hitching posts outside fo the tavern, though they appear to be the only ones currently doing so. Opening the door reveals a fairly cozy wooden interior thick with the smell of various smokeweeds. A handful of people sit in various spots, while a lone female human acts as a waitress, and a burly man stands behind the bar.

With a manner that suggests a party of nonhumans might be far from the strangest thing he has ever seen, the barkeep greets you in a thick accent. "Welcome in, then, travelers... grab a table, an' Marjie'll be right wit' ya. Finest ale in Crall's Shoal, an' the mead's not half bad, neither. Still got some stew left from lunch, or if yer in the mood for somethin' from the sea, we got fresh dilap fillets... they been bitin' good lately."

Indeed, the attitude of the diners here suggests that the party is not considered overly out of place; of course, most of the patrons are dressed along the lines of sailors and such, so their experiences with other races might be broader than those of typical farming folk.

A quick inspection of the room does not, however, reveal any sign of Luinen Tatharon, or any other sylvari, for that matter.

The barkeep is true to his word - after only a few moments, the human woman, a blonde in her early thirties, perhaps, makes her way to the table. Her accent is very similar to that of the barkeep - thick, almost as if she seems to be chewing some of her words. "Right, then," she speaks by way of greeting. "You lot look too dusty to be from a ship, so ye must've ridden in through the swamps, then? Not that we mind business of any sort, but Cardista's tears, it's been too long since any ships have made port!" She sighs heavily. "Never mind, luvs. What can I get ya?"

Subject: communications in Star Wars

I have been asked about how communications in Star Wars works. Here goes:

Basic communication is via commlink. These come in hand-held, vehicle-mounted, and installation/starship mounted varities (listed from weakest to most powerful). Without any assistance, a typical handheld commlink has an effective range of 50 kilometers, more or less, but if properly configured to take advantage of a satellite network, this can be greatly increased. Commlink speed is slightly less than that of light, so these are pretty much useless for interstellar communications.

Option number two is subspace radio. This has a much greater range than standard commlink, but requires a lot more power. A subspace radio typically has a real-time range of several light years. Sector governments often set up a network of subspace transceivers that help connect the scattered worlds, forming a sector-wide communications grid. Ships, command posts, government buildings, etc have these.

Finally, you have the HoloNet, the most powerful and far-reaching communications medium. A network of non-mass transcievers submerged into the time-bending dimension of hyperspace connects worlds in real-time across incredible distances. The HoloNet, maintained by the Republic, is a horrendously expensive venture, and similarly the devices required to communicate on the HoloNet are extremely costly.

HoloNet comms are the realtime, 3-d talking images you see in Star Wars movies. Devices that use the HoloNet are only found on spaceships (and usually only capitol ships, or those that have special need, such as General Kenobi's personal ship in episode 2) or installations. In my games, I would expedct that pay-per-use kiosks are available for this, as well.

Jaal's face splits into a huge grin as Caise accepts his offer of hospitality. "Oustanding!" he exclaims. "Don't worry about my father - guests are always welcomed on Darand Plantation. Well, at least they are usually welcomed."

Umalad's expression is fairly tough to read - aside from sheer terror, ithorian faces simply don't show convey emotions well to most other species - but Jeena does well enough for the both of them. It is clear to everyone (save possibly Jaal) that she thinks this is a bad idea. "A jedi in our home!" he tells her as they head back to the landspeeder.

The party piles into the two landspeeders, taking advantage of the extra seating capacity that Jaal so highly touted. Lana ends up sitting next to Mercury. "Classics? These hunks of floating rust?" she snorts derisively. "Classic in the same sense as fossils, maybe."

Caise makes sure to find seating in the speeder with Jaal - though you get the impression that the young man would have it no other way. Jeena whispers a few more things to him, but he seems to disagree. When Mercury finds an opening to ask Jaal about repulsorlift mods - and the two enter into a "fascinating" conversation about the methods used in the process - she speaks to Caise.

"Listen, as I'm sure you can tell, Jaal's father is no fan of the jedi order. I'm not sure why, myself, but he makes no secret of it. He's a good man, don't get me wrong, but don't be surprised if he's not as friendly as his son." She bites her bottom lip and turns to face the landscape outside.

The landspeeders follow a dirt track roughly north, where the native flora soon gives way to vast fields of grain. Before long, a group of structures, with one particularly larger than the others, comes into view. "Welcome to Darand Plantation!" Jaal exclaims as the speeders whir to a stop in front of the house. "Okay, everybody out. We'll feed you, give you a bed, even a hydro shower if you want one."

Gerald Darand proves to be much larger and imposing than his son - they share coppery locks, but little else. Despite Jeena's concerns, he is welcoming enough - while not overly warm, he is polite, and offers you free use of his home. Once he recognizes Caise as a jedi, he seems to grow thoughtful for a moment, but that is all.

"We serve dinner at 2000 standard," he explains, "and as I'm sure Jaal told you, he will be visiting the city in the morning - be ready to go by 0600. If you require anything, ask my servant, Craln, or one of the droids." He glances at Jaal. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have business to attend to."

With that, he leaves.
