It is impossible to tell where the fire originated; this room is blackened, but it does not appear that there was extensive damage here.

Aside from the sniper, your weapons are equipped with standard sights.

It is impossible to tell at this time what the robot's body may be made from. If you live through the altercation, feel free to examine it, or to get out your junior chemistry set, but in the time alloted, you notice that it is shiny metal, and trying to kill you.

The turret appears to be one single, albeit strange, weapon. something like a mini tank cannon, perhaps?

The robot is right around seven feet tall. At the moment, you have a clear line of fire - there is nothing between you and it. You are probably fifteen feet from the rec room door. There is approximately twenty-five feet between the fire team and the robot. this room is approximately 40' x 40' square.

It would be very difficult (but not impossible) to shimmy under one of the two larger vehicles. Likewise, it would be possible to shoot from under a vehicle, butt he angle would be quite awkward.

Tal'Anor prays to the goddess of love, and she answers her servant with her healing power, knitting together the rest of Dog's torn flesh. The creature seems quite healthy now, though still understandably a bit tired.

The pirate seems quite amused by en'Aranthea's declarations of honor. "Honor?" he cackles. "Haw, haw, haw! Dead is dead, sweet thang! Corpses don't tell folks whether they was stabbed in the back or tha face... last time I checked, they don't care! Besides, missy, you took me out of your warlock friend's trickery, not 'cause you bested me in some fair fight! Where's the honor in that, eh?"

The party discovers that the terrain here comes very close to defining the absolute worst possible location in terms of defensibility - there is no true high ground, and the vegetation and dunes provide far too much cover for ambushing attackers. Nevertheless, there is little to do but to make do as best you can.

A large dune is located as the best possible ground to put your backs up against, and so, you do. The prisoner chuckles at your precautions, and is full of "helpful" observations. "Ask, me," he says, "you'd do better to tromp of through tha swamp, take yar chances with tha beasties, afore Cap'n Markos gets hold of ya! 'E always loves it when some fool decides to fight... ya'd be surprised tha kind 'o noises a soul can make, what when they hurt bad enough..."

The party has to resort to iron rations, since a fire would easily give away their position. "If the lot of you are so honorable," the pirate asks, "Why not just let me go, then? That'd be a right honorable thing ta do, I think!"

At one point, a small branch cracks not far from the campsite, causing the warriors to spring up, blades drawn, but no attack is forthcoming. Hours pass, night deepens, and still, no attack comes.

The night passes with you taking fitful watches, but no attack ever presents itself.

That's true. Clichés are not at all bad in and of themselves.

And you get lots of these with new players - that's to be expected.

But let me use an example of a player I gamed with for a long time. Each and every game, he'd play the same basic thing - a big, brawny fighter. sometimes, he'd vary it, and be a big, brawny knight, or a big, brawny barbarian.

Always used the biggest two handed weapon he could find. alsways used the exact same nonexistent background.

After a few years, you'd think maybe he could branch out a bit, or try something *slightly* different? Maybe have a living family member, or a different motivation?

The setup: player who either (a) lacks the imagination or (b) lacks the motivation to create a background with any sort of detail to it. So, what does he do?

"My character's parents were killed by orcs/a fire/wandering monsters when my character was a baby. He has no real friends or other family. He is a loner."

I looooove that one!

I'll start us off. How many time have you seen this one? It's a new D&D game, and rather than go into an elaborate backstory, the DM decides to just jump right in. He then starts off with those six dreaded words...

"You all meet in a tavern..."

Yep. A guaranteed half hour of boring, awkward roleplay, or a complete glossover that feels like you've missed something.

I get the impression from Brom that he does not want to fire until fired upon.

A well-aimed 40mm grenade will not include any team mebers in the blast radius (these typically cover about half the area of a normal hand grenade), provided they stay out of melee. Ideally, you'll have 25+ feet to fire the grenade round; less than that, and it will not arm. In a perfect world, you'd like 40 feet.

Note that the vehicles are not burned up, merely cut opn, as if being scavenegd for parts. They may be somewhat soot covered, but they have not burned.

There are no heavy weapons, or weapons of any sort, on any of the vehicles. These are simply personnel carriers for artcic climates, not conbat vehicles.

The battle was over quick enough, and the party had managed to do well. They gave much better than they got, and it was time to press on.

Well, time, save the fact that one of the Greens had surrendered to Maximus. The big man had interrogated him, whihc was fine by Arien, but the knight could not stomach that the gladiator actually did plan to execute his prisoner.

True enough, the Greens were cowards who did not believe in fair fights - their poisoned bolts spoke volumes to that. Still, their courage could not be doubted; many strong men feared to battle with good steel in their hands, yet these men waded into the fray unarmed! Did such courage not deserve some consideration?

Once the Green had answered Maximus' question - or refused to do so - the heir to House Thedell found he could hold his tongue no longer. "Stay your hand, friend Maximus," Arien spoke.

"You know I am no stranger to bloodshed, but I cannot allow this. Were we executing this man for a crime, it would be one thing... but as far as we have seen, he has simply done his duty - he has followed the orders of his commander. I cannot let you murder him for this."

Even as he spoke, Arien knew the others might not agree with him... and yet, he had to speak. "No one wants to gain this tower more than I! And yet, if you do this, if I allow you to do this, what makes us different from those we oppose?"

Arien shook his head before speaking in the firm voice of one who believed in what he spoke. "No. Bind him. Let one of the mages render him senseless. But we will not murder a man who has offered his surrender."

I realize that Arien may not be able to prevent a quick kill stroke, but there is absolutely no way he will allow Maximus to torture this man to death. If at all possible, he will prevent what he sees as murder.

Doing the right thing is seldom easy. That's why it's the path less travelled.

Good topic!

My first love is fantasy gaming, though I admit that I'm more of a low fantasy (magic sword are rare and precious) than a high fantasy (2nd level rogues pick their teeth with +1 daggers) guy.

That begin said, I love sci fi - Trek gaming can be great fun. and if you combine the two (Star Wars)... well, that's a blast, too!

Hrm... I'm running a modern game right now, featuring a team of Army Rangers, and am enjoying the heck outta that, too!

I guess I like all sorts of games.

The GM has screwed up big time, and someone just now pointed it out to me.

For some unknown reason, I had fire team A going north, and fire team B going south. So if you were confused by my descriptions, that's why.

I have thought about it, and I don't think that it makes sense to replay things, or to do any "reality editing" - so if everyone's okay with it, we'll just pretend that the looey ordered team A to the north end, team B to the south... not the other way around.

My apologies!

Jaal fixes Ziv with a stare. "Somebody that can help? Maybe so. Hmmm..."

Lana interrupts. "Listen, boys, I know you all are just itching to play hero, to shoot up the TDF base and swoop out with your friends in tow, but have you thought about what you'd do then? We gotta get off this rock sometime, and if you go cracking open a TDF holding cell, you better have a ride lined up."

Jaal looks at Lana, then back at Ziv and Mercury. "Maybe she has a point?"


The med tech injects Caise with a powerful healing serum, and then begins dissolving the various pieces of shrapnel with a med laser. At the same time, another tech tends Damanil's wounds. Other than that, the ride to TDF quarters is a quiet one.

Fifteen minutes or so later, Caise regains consciousness. The jedi realizes that the injuries are still quite serious - but that he will live. Likewise, Damanil also looks much better; whatever substance these TDF are using must be a potent healing agent, indeed.

Suddenly, the personnel carrier lurches to a halt. The dirver's voice comes in over the intercom. "There is some sort of disturbance ahead. Everyone remain calm and seated."

The med tech tending Caise goes pale. She looks confused, torn, then... resolute. She reaches for a hypo, then asks her colleague to hand down an instrument from a storage bin above. When he turns to do so, she jams the needle into his neck, whereupon he instantly crumples to the ground.

Panic in her eyes, the young woman faces the group. "Move quickly," she hisses. "The driver is in on it - they will be here any moment!" She fixes her gaze on Dime, and speaks an odd phrase. "The stars of the core shine even here."

She opens the rear hatch, and blaster fire can be heard from the not too far distance. "You are being set up, but I will not stomach the TDF murdering a member of the jedi order. Know that there are still supporters of the Republic on this system. Go now - they intended to use the confusion of this attack to ensure your deaths. Instead use it to cover your escape!"

Tons of good questions, there!

I would think that yes, the vehicles could indeed provide cover. Everyone can reach cover within this round, and still fire.

You are not close enough to any exit to simply step out of the room. You may flee, of course.

The turret is the only visible ranged weapon. The turret appears to have free movement; if forced to guess, you'd think that it could cover perhaps a 270 degree arc, with the only blindside being the opposite side of the robot. Of course, the robot does appear to freely hover.

Re: hover questions... do you think I'm gonna just tell you? Hard to say if it can hover over a vehicle; you have not seen it do so. Does not mean that it cannot (or that it can). It appears to be hovering about two feet off of the ground... no idea if that is a hard limit, or simply the chosen altitude.

Grenades from the M413 are effective against most substances. Hardened bunkers are unaffected, and it is typically a waste of time to fire a grenade against tank armor (designed to stop depleted uranium rounds). However, Denes would know, for instance, that firing a grenade against a tank's TRACKS would be extremely effective.

Denes (for that matter, no one in the group) has never seen, nor heard of, a device like this robot. It is unknown whether bullets or grenades will be efective.

Nothing in your briefing has covered the possibility of this creation. You know that there was classified research going on here, but to your understanding, it was in the field of physics, not robotics. There is no SOP for state of the art deathbots... you'll have to use your own best judgement.

I'm an old codger. I still prefer 2nd edition D&D.

Yes, I like the skills and saving throws in D20. That's all. Stinking combat rounds that are 1/10th the time in game time, but take the DM ten times as long to run! You kids get off my lawn!

I will confess that the 2nd edition I run is HEAVILY modified. Who needs to change editions, anyway? Why, back in my day...

First off, fire team B stayed in the cold for another nine minutes, requiring yet another FORT check against the cold. Kane, Johannsen, and Lee failed their saves. As a result, the entire team is now fatigued. Health is listed below:

LT Kernan: mild cold damage
PFC Pearson: moderate cold damage
WO Blake: minimal cold damage
CPL Hatherford: moderate cold damage

CPL Hart: moderate cold damage
SSG Kane: moderate cold damage
CPL Johannsen: serious cold damage
SGT Lee: mild cold damage

A word to the wise - do NOT expose skin to the kind of cold found outside of ARF36. It would have been better to cut off a chunk of the yeti, and then take a sterile sample inside where it is warm, than it would to freeze yourself. I was kind and did not apply frostbite; don't test the GM's benign nature again (as most here will tell you I don't really have one).

Fire Team A, you guys are in combat (unless maybe you talk the critter out of attacking you?). Remember that everyone in this fire team, save Hatherford, is carrying a weapon with selective fire - single (most accuracy), three round burst, and autofire (most damage, eats a whole magazine unless you try to conserve). Please specify the firing mode on all attacks.

Hatherford, I am assuming you are using your sidearm, due to the range involved. You may, of course, use the SWS (sniper rifle) if you desire; let me know.

Everyone has grenades; as grenadier, Pearson has the M413 grenade launcher.

Fire team B, please consult the map and let me know how you wish to proceed. I'm guessing that you explore the bunk room, the sample storage are, and then, perhaps, the testing laboratory? Kane, a list of room numbers in the order you plan to investigate them, would be appreciated.

May 8th, 2025
Antarctic Research Facility, Antarctica - 1751
Fire Team A

After finsihing the sweep of the rec room and storage closets, Lieutenant Kernan's team opens the door to the garage.

The room is large, designed to hold two snow crawlers and three snow cats, along with tools and adequate space to maintain all of the vehicles. The large garage doors are uninsulated, which results in this room being colder than the rest of the station - though far warmer than the brutal environs outside.

It appears that some time in the recent past, a fire has swept though this room - the walls are charred, and smoke damage is evident everywhere. All five vehicles are present, but all have apparently been cannabalized for parts; various access panels are open (or even cast aside), wires stick out from odd places, sections of vehicles are simply gone, as if carried off. The vehicles themselves are blackened from soot and smoke; it is doubtful that any of them are functional.

As the team picks its way through the garage, a strange whirring sound fills the air. Suddenly, a large, shining, metallic abomination levitates up from the far corner of the room!

It is a thing from a nightmare - from one side of the asymmetrical torso sprouts a long, gripping arm terminating in a powerful metal claw, as well as two smaller, more delicate limbs. The other side of the torso sports a fearsome weapons mount, with some sort of rotating turrent assembly. The squat head has three red eyes, as well as an impressive array of sensors. The entire body floats two feet above the ground over a cloud of blueish particles.

A metallic voice eminates from within the robot. "Intruders detected," it speaks in a calm, unhurried manner. "Initiating protocol Gamma-four-six. Hostiles to be destroyed."

The oddly shaped barrel from the turret rotates to point at the fire team, then begins glowing red!


May 8th, 2025
Antarctic Research Facility, Antarctica - 1751
Fire Team B

Sergeant Kane orders the medic to take a sample of the yeti, and so, she breaks out the needed gear. Meanwhile, Hart examines the door and the door frame, and muses over what he has seen so far.

The blue field did not seem to stop him from reaching back through it, any more than it had stopped him from entering in the first place. That was comforting.

The door had been clearly ripped off from the outside; perhaps the creature had torn off the door in an effort to escape the attackers who had shot it? Unfortunately, the creature could not tell them.

Johannsen removes her outer gloves to don surgical ones, and immediately regrets the decision. Even though the fire team is somewhat sheltered from the wind, the room, being exposed to the weather, is truly no warmer than the environmnet. The medic's fingers go numb almost immediately; by the time her samples are taken, they are blue with cold. Finally, the job is done, and the team stumbles into the heated area of ARF36.

You find yourselves in the south end of a long hallway. On the left wall are regularly spaced doors that correspond to the map's desginations for staff quarters. The first door on the right is the receiving room.

The receiving room is fairly nondescript; a large, metal door dominates the eastern wall, with a switch to raise and lower it. A large hydraulic jack is here.

Charges are about 40% stronger than C4. Smaller, lighter. Still require a detonator or blasting cap. Burn well, but not explosively. Dropping, cutting, smashing, shooting does not cause explosion.
