Topic: Star Trek: Discovery
Subject: for a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some advice...

Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery, Lt. Ames' Quarters - 0025

"Okay boys, that's it," Caleb stated with finality as he stood from the table. Despite being a reasonably competant player, he had quite simply lost his shirt tonight. Sometimes you win, sometimes you skip the niceties for the next pay period.

He had really hit it off with Lieutenant N'doog - the two of them really seemed to understand one another. Which was made even more interesting, Caleb mused, considering the fact that virtually no one ever seemed to understand most of what came out of Bob's mouth.

The thing was, the catullan was completely non judgemental, and easily one of the most open-minded people that Caleb had met in starfleet. The man did his thing and was happy with it; if you did your thing and were happy with it, then he was happy with it, too.

Caleb winced and rubbed his head. The combination of the booze and the attempt to follow such a Bob-esque thought process was making his head hurt.

"Lab shift again tomorrow," he announced, "so I have to get up early. Bob's been grousing about sleeping for the past hour, and it's past time that I agree with him. Enjoy my money!" he added with a chuckle.

As they stepped outside, Talda and N'doog realized that their quaretrs lay in opposite directions. "Bob, you are hilarious, man..." Caleb started, "but seriously... well, I don't want to sound like a moron, but you are... I dunno. Grounded? Don't sweat the small stuff that seems to bother most of the rest?"

Showing some rare awkwardness, Caleb chuckled. "Anyway, I hope we can hang out again. I've got decent balance - maybe we'll do some of this 'skateboarding' on the holodeck sometime?"

OOC: any reply...

Caleb nodded. "Okay, then, cool. Talk to ya later!" With that, he turned and headed toward his few hours of sleep.

Subject: the rating?

The stick in he mud answer: our terms of service requires that posted mterial not be of a graphic sexual nature. PG, please.

The reasonable answer: we have lots of teens, even young ones, who play here - to say nothing of some of our kids who read along. I have, for the entire history of the Inn, treid to make the site family-friendly. I want people to be comfortable with their kids gaming here. So again, PG.

No real swearing, no graphic depictions of sex. If you wouldn't see it in a network broadcast of a Trek episode, you shouldn't see it here.

Looks like everyone is stepping it up a bit! Nice posts all around!

I will be bumping the story forward here in a bit. However, sui and RK, feel free to finish out your conversation - it's worth the RP, no doubt. As a Trek player, you sometimes have to keep up with "temporal anomalies" - i.e. posts in more than one time frame.

Subject: good knight

He cuts a dashing figure in his shining platemail, with his fine cloak of gold-trimmed green flowing behind him. His glittering emerald eyes dance with an inner light, contrasted sharply by his well-kept shock of raven-black hair. After taking a polite sip of wine from his goblet, the young man smiles warmly and adresses the group.

"As several of you already know, I am Sir Arien Aston Thedell the third." Those that have traveled with the young man in the past might pick up on the hole in his introduction; this is possibly the first time in his life that Arien is without his twin sister, Alloryn. Even so, the knight's smile seems quite genuine, and though he is not a particularly tall man, Arien is full of the sort of confidence and energy that makes a person appear to be larger than they really are.

"What would you know of me? I hail from Nyrond, where our family's holdings are located. My grandfather was a mighty and honorable warrior, and I am proud to carry his name."

His hand drifts to the pommel of his sword. "I have found Dwan Granitecrusher to be good and truthful employer, and so, I am happy to be of service to him and the Iron League."

I won't announce the end, per se; we'll just jump ahesd to the next thing. That being said, as Eol pointed out, you can ALWAYS bckpost anything that might have been left out.

I would like to see Gavison's reaction, so I'll probably holdoff one more day for those who need to post to do so.

I have a very non-Rodenberry take on cash in Star Trek. The idea of a no money utopia is great, but I just don't see it working. Time and time again, we have seen that socialism leads to stagnation and decay.

But let's be more practical than that. Supposedly, there are various insterstellar trading bodies, and intercivilization trading is common. Are we to really believe that in the 2400s, everyone has gone back to barter? Please.

If you want to be utopian, fine. I can believe that hunger has been eradicated... maybe. But I just can't suspend my disbelief enough in order to swallow a "no money" society.

Electronic cash, sure. Nonexistent, nope.

Subject: an unconventionl meeting...

Stardate: 2366.10.21
USS Discovery, ten forward - 2110

Ensign Talda stepped into the dimly-lit lounge in search of a little diversion. He felt a bit restless; today had been a lab shift day, rather than one for the bridge. Even though he got more "real" work done in the labs, he missed the chance to man a station on the great vessel's command hub, despite the fact that his typical shift there fell into the classic "graveyard" period where next to nothing ever occured.

The downside to the split schedule was that his body often found itself awake when it should be asleep, and vice-versa. Tonight, though, he was wide wake and on the prowl...

...and all alone.

Gwen had long since tired of the novelty of a boyfriend with such lenient views on subjects like fidelity. Not that it surprised him; few in Starfleet were as casual as the Risans when it came to such matters. Still, he had genuinely felt serious emotion for the woman, and working with her had since become more than a little awkward. The string of casual affirs since that point had been entertaining diversions, but little more.

A good portion of ten forward was actually fairly empty. For a minute or two, Caleb despaired of finding anyone to chat with until he spotted a somewhat familiar face. The science officer ordered a tasty (but unpronounceable) purple drink and made his way to a table across the room.

He addressed the catullan alredy sitting there. "Lieutenant... Bob, isn't it?" Caleb didn't know the man that well, but had served with him on the planetside team at Gavin III. Hopefully, that would serve as an icebreaker.

OOC: some response

"Call me Caleb." He regarded the gathering of senior staff. "So, the brass are up to something tonight, eh? Didn't you get a new boss out of the Valmont meeting?"

OOC: assuming there's no "shove it, dude!"

Talda nodded, trying to figure out what exactly it was that N'doog had said. The young officer found his gaze drifting back to the staff dinner, despite his intentions to put it elsewhere.

"I want to be there someday..." he murmured, then looked up, a little ashamed at having stated his thoughts out loud. For some reason, though, the catullan put him at ease, so he continued. "Yeah. I feel it every time I step on the bridge. One day, I want to be in that circle."

OOC: any response

Caleb shook his head and grinned. "Tell you what - let me buy you a drink, Bob." He paused for moment. "Say, are you a gambling man? I hear that Lieutenant Ames in ops is scaring up a poker game later on..."

Subject: Plot twists most worth of a dice shower?

So, you've pursued that villain for session after session, only to have him turn out to be completely unrelated to the plot?

The answer, of course, is to pelt your GM with a nice handful of dice.

Share with us some stories of moments that made you want to treat your DM/GM/storyteller to this punishment!

I'll start you off with one my pal Richard just related to me:

Their party had spent the past two realtime years (biweekly sessions) dealing with their nemesis, this "master of the dream realm" guy. They'd vanquished him two or three times, but he always kept finding his way back into their lives.

Characters had lived, some had married, some had seen friends and loved ones die. Some had made bad choices, some had done quite well.

They just discovered that it was ALL a dream.

Methinks a dice shower would be too kind. A lynching might be in order, instead!
