The pilgrims scream in panic and pain as shapes from the mist move into their midst. The party all rush towards the stricken travelers in an effort to give aid.

Fortunately, it seems that the attackers are, if possible, even less spry than the travel-weary pilgrims. For a moment or two, it looks as if the Lysorans may be able to break free.

As the melee fighters rush to give aid, Talca pulls up and raises his bow to sight at one of the attackers.

It is a scene from a nightmare.

Their flesh is a pale, greenish-gray - where it still remains whole. In many places, skin and flesh alike hang loose or are missing entirely, revealing bone underneath. The eyes are wide and empty, staring vacantly (provided that the eyes are not missing altogether); yet somehow, you instinctively know that these abominations can see quite clearly.

Aedan begins plucking strings and sings an inspiring tune. The man's musical ability is truly remarkable, for as he sings, it seems as if the rest of you feel physically better.

The sylvari ranger looses an arrow that buries itself deep within the chest of an abomination... that staggers, yet grabs on to one of the pilgrims.

Then, the true terror reveals itself.

One creature seems to be in much better physical condition than the others. Where the majority seem to be slow, awkward, animated corpses shuffling along... this one is different. It appears to be a twisted mockery of a human, but it does not seem to be in the same state of decay as the others. It grins broadly, revealing a mouth full of crooked fangs, then begins giggling in a maniacal fashion as it leaps among the terrified pilgrims. It rends about with claw and fang, and every person it touches either falls to the damp ground or freezes in their tracks altogether.

Vengador brandishes the disk of the sun that he wears around his neck, and gesturing to the sky, loudly denounces the undead in the name of Solanis. The sun god is truly with his priest, as five of the shuffling corpses retreat from his presence.

Pepper tears into the creatures, felling the one that Talca has already shot. Rae is right behind, interceding between the creatures and the two pilgrims still trying to flee. The paladin of Falloes fends off a blow with her shield, then parries, splitting the skull of the zombie wide open.

Irel looses her own arrow, intent on the giggling monstrosity, but it nimbly leaps to the side - and the arrow barely misses a fallen pilgrim.

And then, the creature is upon Pepper. She manages to keep its filthy fangs away from her throat, though it comes close enough to let her smell the stench of death on its breath. However, its dirty claws do rend the flesh on her forearm; while the wound itself is minor, the rogue feels a dank, unholy chill creep into her very bones, and discovers in horror that she can no longer move!

Rae moves to help, landing a blow that staggers the giggling creature. It fixes the shield maiden with yellow eyes, flicks a blackened tongue at her, then leaps away, running off into the mist. Several more of the shuffling corpses press into the melee, and for a moment, things begin to look grim... and then, Hammerfoot finally closes the gap. Holding his own holy symbol aloft, Kharox' cleric commands the abominations to flee - and all of them do so.

Talca pulls his bowstring back... only to discover that there are no more immediate threats.

The fight, such as it is, is over.

The deck layout says that VIP quarters are on deck 2, but diplomatic facilities are on deck 3. Of course, on a Patrol variant like the Peregrine, we have reduced diplomatic and science space, in exchange for more torpedoes and more security personnel.

So, I guess we leave it at deck 2?

You could simply have containment fields set up in corridors that are keyed to only allow authorized personnel; that should do it.

I would honestly think that one escort per ambassador would be enough. I mean, even though we don't trust them, they technically are honored guests, VIPs, etc. I feel like two might be an insult. Leave strict orders that an ambassador is not to leave your sight EVER, unless they are in their quarters (only one way in/out).

I like the idea of having other crew wear sidearms. I mean, guys, this *is* a warship. We don't have families or other civilians aboard.

I will likely have Drake suggest at the staff meeting that we set Security protocols on the turbolifts to prevent access to certain decks.

Honestly, the diplomats should probably only have access to decks 2-5. Security, the armory, and shuttlebay 2 should be off limits on deck 5, but we can't really keep them from the gymnasium, the holosuites, the lounge. Decks 2, 3, 4 all have areas that diplomats would need to have access to (even if limited access), but also have sensitive systems that they should not be allowed to go near.

As far as sidearms go, I imagine that Drake is going to want people carrying weapons they are comfortable with - i.e. typical phasers.

You have six enlisted and two officers who are specifically there as Security officers, to say nothing of the other tactical personnel who could step in, or the security staff that have other details (ordinance specialist, master at arms). We truly don't have enough people to guard all the important systems around the clock, plus have escorts on the diplomats around the clock... but seeing as how they are only supposed to be on board for 3-4 days, you should have enough people. Maybe we can discuss containment fields or the like in key positions, and rely on escorts for the diplomats (few or no guards on other places).

As Drake and Zai made their way back to the Peregrine, Silas couldn't help but feel a slight bounce in his step. On the one hand, the mission had just gotten tremendously more complicated; the Peregrine staff was now expected to babysit (and oversee) two ambassadors without really having the space or personnel to do so. And, of course, there was the nontrivial factor that Drake would trust neither of them literally any further than he could throw them. At best, this was some power play for the negotiations; at worst, one (or both) ambassadors were spies intent on twisting the situation to their advantage. In fact, Drake mused, I'd almost be surprised if they *weren't* spies.

Still, Silas would be lying if he didn't admit that he had enjoyed seeing the insufferable Jacobs put in his place, even if only on minor issues. May as well take that petty pleasure where I can get it, he thought.

As they walked, Tochi cast a sideline glance and spoke up. "We're pretty sure we've figured out where the animosity between Jacobs and yourself comes from, sir, and, if it makes you feel any better, I thought about dropping him on his pompous ass, myself, in the first minutes we met the man."

Silas flashed a rueful grin, and once more counted his lucky stars for Tochi as his XO. The Trill was a true friend, the sort you would hope to have at your back in any situation - whether that was on an AWAY mission, in an alley behind a seedy off-planet bar, or in a stuffy negotiation session with irritating ambassadors.

"Tochi," he replied, "the man is every bit the pompous ass and then some. You've seen how he can be in the sum total of an hour's worth of exposure to him; I've had the 'pleasure' of spending three and a half years serving under him. And yet..." Silas frowned as they walked, "if I told you the whole story, you might well think less of me. It's not that I haven't fantasized many a day about wiping that smug look off of his ridiculous face, but it didn't go down quite like that. If I had simply snapped and punched him... well, almost anyone with a pulse could at least understand it, even if they didn't agree. But I lost control, and it was far worse than that." The Captain's gaze went unfocused. "It's a tale for another time," he added simply.


Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 0850

Silas had barely retaken his chair from Lieutenant Moriden when Petty Officer Vish materialized in front of him, PADD in hand. "Good morning, Riva," he spoke by way of greeting. "What do you have for me now?"

The Bajoran yeoman smirked in response. "For starters, sir, some formalities for you to sign off on related to the ambassadors that we have apparently poached. You also need to sign off on the transfer of the Hekaran pod to the USS Serapis, who arrived while you were away. Oh..." she paused, mischief in her eyes twinkling brighter than the traditional earring she wore in her right ear, "your Operations chief also deigned to show up while you were away."

Drake frowned at the disrespect for the rank, but did not mention it. "Lieutenant Tetsuku? Good, I'll need to meet..."

"Not Lieutenant Tetsuku," Vish interrupted. "Lieutenant Lasad."

The Captain's frown deepened. "Lieutenant Lasad? But I thought that..."

"Apparently, there was some sort of mix up on the transfer orders," she interjected. "Lieutenant Lasad's dossier - or what Starfleet bothered to send of it - is there on the PADD. Yes, there are major holes. If I didn't know better, I would wonder if someone wasn't pulling you around, sir."

Silas sighed. He considered scolding his yeoman for reading the Ops Chief's file; he had little doubt that she had likely used his security codes to access details not publicly available... but then again, Riva frequently did so to help him do his job more efficiently. After all, having someone trustworthy to act as a filter for the mountains of paperwork associated with running a starship meant that the Captain could dedicate his time to more than reading transcriptions of requisition forms... which resulted in a net positive of a more efficient ship. As such, Drake decided that, this time around, discretion was the better part of valor - though he made a mental note to remind Riva that certain items should be off limits (or, at least, off limits to public discussions).

"Jerking me around, Riva." Silas instead corrected. "The expression is 'jerking me around'. And yes... the thought has crossed my mind, as well."

Drake glanced over the conspicuously barren dossier, then signed off on the requested forms before returning the PADD to Vish. "Riva," he spoke, "we've had far too much turnover far too quickly. I know that it's unusual for me to do so on back to back days, but I feel like we need another staff meeting to be sure that everyone is one the same page. Please notify the department heads that we're having a staff meeting at eleven hundred hours. The ambassadors will be here by twelve hundred or so, and we're scheduled to leave at thirteen hundred; we'll call it a working lunch, as I doubt many of us get an actual lunch break today."

Vish accepted the PADD from the Captain and nodded with a more serious expression. "Aye, sir. I'll let them know."

"Thank you, Riva," Silas answered. With a grin, she was gone.

That sounds totally reasonable.

Any time you are dealing with an NPC, even if it isn't "your" NPC, you may always safely assume that they fulfill their duties. Informing superior officers of plot-critical points definitely falls into this.

It's polite to check in with the "owner" of the NPC or department before you RP out a complete scene, but a simple notification like this can be taken directly at face value.

The Captain's message probably came over between 0815 and 0830; I'm fine with Berk being on the bridge to hear it. If not, Ensign Blackmon would have had the shift at that time, and you can assume that she would have passed it on.

By that timeline, Lt. Lasad likely just missed the convo. Of course, it would also make sense that Lt. Moriden would have let him know, as well.

Security guards would indeed be a minimum requirement in my book.

Starbase 118, Conference Room A3 - 0745

As Silas and Tochi sat in full dress uniform in the otherwise empty conference room, the CO of the Peregrine allowed his thoughts to wander for a moment. He had met two of his three new department heads; Doc Moore seemed a grounded, friendly officer. Lieutenant Berk had been effusive in his praise of his Captain... almost to the point of flattery, which had made Silas a bit uncomfortable. However, he resolved to make no judgment yet; he well remembered the jitters that came with meeting a CO for the first time. Indeed, he had many of those same butterflies himself at the moment while he waited for Jacobs and the diplomats to show.

Drake was more than a little concerned that he had yet to hear from Lieutenant Tetsuku, the officer slotted to be his new Ops Chief. He knew full well that they would not tarry long before leaving the starbase after this meeting, and the stress of having such a vital department without a head was beginning to wear on him.

Even though the meeting was scheduled for 0800, Silas had possessed zero intention of showing up at that time; as far as he was concerned, being on time would have been the equivalent of being rather late. It seemed that Tochi had read his mind; at 0715, Ensign P'Tammah had entered the bridge to relieve Lt. Zai for his meeting. The Trill had simply arched an eyebrow, offered a "shall we?", and off they had gone.

As frustrated as Drake was at the forced turnover of his crew, he thanked his lucky stars that Starfleet had not yet seen fit to take Lieutenant Zai from him. In just a few short months, the two had developed an excellent rapport; Tochi always seemed to know what Silas was expecting in a given situation, and always seemed to be prepared. The crew respected him and responded well to him; one day, Tochi himself would make a fine commanding officer.

Sadly, the overall happy musings were quickly throw into discord as the door hissed open to admit Captain Jacobs and his own XO. "Mister Drake," he spoke by way of greeting. Silas felt his teeth clench as he rose to greet the incoming mission commander. For a brief moment, Jacobs' eyes flitted over to Lieutenant Zai before returning to Drake. "Your own executive officer is a lieutenant?" he asked, disdain dripping from every syllable.

Silas refused to take the bait and kept his voice even. "On a Saber class vessel, we have a shortage of senior ranking officers," he responded. "Fortunately for us, Lieutenant Zai is as fine an officer as I have had the pleasure to serve with."

Captain Jacobs' face avoided a sneer, but his voice did not. "Indeed," he offered before idly indicating the woman to his left. "This is Commander Farr, my own Executive Officer."

The tall woman, who looked to be in her late thirties, with short brown hair and brown eyes, greeted the two Peregrine officers with more warmth than did her Captain. She stepped forward and extended a hand to each. "Bethany Farr. A pleasure to meet you gentlemen."

Silas thought that he detected a shadow of disapproval on Jacobs' face as he shook her hand, but he could have easily been imagining it. "The pleasure is ours, Commander," he replied.

Jacobs cleared his throat and spoke up in his derisive tone. "Drake, you are here because the diplomats have requested to meet the commanders of each vessel - not for your silver tongue. You will answer questions if the diplomats direct any to you, but otherwise, you will speak only if spoken to. At all times, you will show proper deference to the chain of command. Do I make myself clear?"

Silas swallowed. "Crystal, sir."

Fortunately, any possibility of further small talk was cut short by the entrance of the two diplomats.

The first to enter was a tall, thin humanoid with skin of a slightly orangeish tone. The top of his head was bald and partially ridged, though he wore wavy yellowish hair down nearly to his collar. His clothing consisted of simple, flowing robes of white. Silas immediately recognized Ambassador Threel of the Rytain from the homework he had been doing.

Directly behind came a shorter, bulkier being. His grayish skin seemed rather scaly, and his stringy hair - a purple nearly dark enough to almost be considered black - came to his jaw. His clothing, by contrast, was fare more utilitarian, brown breeches and a tunic that appeared to have metal plates woven into them. This would be Ambassador D'Lar of the Kuldar.

The ambassadors stood a couple of spans apart, but both faced the Federation officers. After exchanging greetings, Threel posed a query.

"I had thought that we would be meeting the Captains of both Federation ships. Why does only one of you bear the rank insignia of a Captain?" he asked in what might have been perceived as a disinterested tone.

Jacobs shot a sideways glace at Drake before answering. "I am the Captain of the USS Coronado; Commander Drake is the Captain of the USS Peregrine," he explained.

"Interesting," replied Threel. "So, Commander Drake - or is it Captain? Which is it? How is this possible?"

Feeling Jacobs' eyes fixed on him, Silas smiled. "Both are technically correct, Ambassador. While it is true that captain is a rank, and I am a commander, it is also true that the commanding officer of a Federation starship is always referred to as 'Captain'. One is a position, one is a rank. I hold the first, though not the second."

Threel nodded, appearing mollified by the explanation. "Thank you for clearing up the confusion," he responded.

Silas smiled politely. "Of course."

So far, so good, Silas mused. The Ambassadors discussed the itinerary with Jacobs, before changing the subject to the various diplomatic staff and their needs. It seemed that everything was all but decided when D'Lar spoke up.

"Commander Drake," he asked in a gruff, no nonsense tone, "is it not true that you are in command of the superior vessel?"

Silas was caught completely off guard by the query, and Jacobs attempted to interrupt. "Now, Ambassador, the Peregrine is here for escort purposes only; our diplomatic facilities aboard the Coronado are far superior..."

D'Lar cut him off with an irritated gesture. "That is not what I asked, nor was I speaking to you. I ask again, Commander Drake - is it not true that you are in command of the superior vessel?"

Silas cleared his throat and chose his words carefully, ignoring the look of insulted shock on Jacobs' face. "It is true, Ambassador, that the Peregrine has greater combat capabilities than does the Coronado. But the Coronado is larger, her accommodations are much more extensive, and..."

D'Lar cut him off. "That is what I thought. I would travel on the stronger vessel; strength for my strength. I will take my berth aboard the Peregrine, Commander. My staff may follow on the Coronado."

Jacobs gaped like a fish out of water and began to sputter a response when Threel spoke up. "Let it not be said that any Kuldar will gain face in this matter. I will also take my berth aboard the Peregrine. When do we leave?"

Silas nodded. "As you wish, ambassadors. I will have quarters prepared for you at once."

Nearly shaking with rage, Jacobs cut in. "We are scheduled to depart at thirteen hundred hours," he seethed.

Threel smiled. "Very well, captain. See to it that my staff is taken care of; I will greet you next at Gamera III. Commander Drake, I will have my things brought to your ship." With that the ambassador gave a smile, then turned to leave.

D'Lar grinned wolfishly. "I will bring my own things to your ship, commander. Likewise, captain, I expect you to see to my own staff." He also left, and momentarily, the conference room contained only the four Federation officers.

Jacobs burned in silent fury for a moment, and seemed to be looking for words; Drake took the opportunity to key his commbadge. "Drake to Lieutenant Moriden. Lieutenant, we have a change of plans - we need two diplomatic suites prepared immediately, one for each of the Kuldar and Rytain ambassadors. Be sure to tailor everything as closely as possible for their preferences."

The response came swiftly. =/= Aye, sir. ~~wheeze~~ I'm on it now. =/=

"Thank you, Lieutenant. Drake out." With that Silas met Captain Jacobs' gaze. "Do you have any orders, sir?"

His lips tight in anger, Jacobs shook his head before speaking slowly and pointedly. "Do not screw this up, Mister Drake."
