Hammerfoot approaches the pilgrims, palms open, asking about their health and offering aid. Most of the rest of the party takes up defensive positions, or prepares for a fight, though Vengador the Dawnbringer seems to take it farther than most. His cries of rebuke ring out through the fog, causing moans of fear from the rattily-clothed lot of men on the road. They huddle close, looking fearfully around, but seem to relax a bit when no immediate attack presents itself.

For it is indeed men that they are - dirty from the road, damp from the oppressive drizzle, and half starved by the look of them - but men, nonetheless. They shuffle and stagger along, most leaning on branches and staves.

Their leader, a slightly less gaunt human with a stringy, dirty beard, shakes his head at the offer from the cleric of Kharox. Huge dark rings are under his eyes, as if he has slept little for days. "Nay, short one, we are well enough. We cannot afford to tarry, not with what stalks these roads at night. We seek the blessed shrine of Lysora in the Taverton wood - we dare not stop, lest we never make it."

He fixes a baleful gaze in your direction. "You would do well if you were not on this road come dark. They are coming."

His companions groan in agreement, and the pilgrims shuffle past the khord, bound south and east.

Post coming from me soon. I don't know that it will quote move us to morning yet, but I'll get something up.

Lots of people want the Captain's time!

This is a lot of "not it". Somebody likely has to bear this burden.

Or not! Up to you guys.

The transfers were not expected, so for things to be hectic and such makes total sense.

Sent you a PM, Hammer. Not saying your cleric is wrong, but the accusation he's tossing is conjecture at this point.

Thanks to all of you who have jumped in and made it happen. The Inn is nothing without the people who play and share here.

Hey Dox -

Great post, man. I absolutely love how, rather than wait for the plot to include you, you are making up a subplot that doesn't hurt anyone else's gaming, but give you tons to do. Seriously... WAY TO GO. This is EXACTLY how Science - which can be one of the toughest departments to play - should be done!

I'm about to head to bed, and I have a full day of little league tomorrow (parade in the morning, followed by coaching two games), so it will be tomorrow evening before I can post - but I *will* post a reply.

No worries at all.

The earliest I will post would be tomorrow evening; I have a little league parade in the morning, and then, two little league baseball games to coach.

Neither Hammer nor AmaraD have yet to post; as I understand it, Amara is/was wrapped up in a work issue, and again, I want to give everyone a fair chance to post.

Our new doc and Tac chief have been added to the roster; Ops chief is coming very soon.

Boo Boo - I have edited Nurse Cook's entry to show her as "head nurse". That only makes sense to me, give her rank and the personality she's playing with.

I'll see what I can do. I'm trying to give everyone a chance to post before I do so.

Remember, the advertised posting rate for this game is 1-2 posts per week. Seeing as how it's only been a few hours since I posted, I feel like I have to give people a good chance.

The players have withdrawn, so we're bringing new ones in. This way, it becomes part of the narrative instead of quite as much of a soap opera switcharoo.

You don't have to have me bless it. Be creative!

The basic idea is that the Kuldar and Rytain should be no real threat to us. Their weapons would have a REALLY tough time penetrating our shields, and even if they did, the armor on the Peregrine would be more than a match for them.

Feel free to invent crap and Treknobabble it.

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Captain's Quarters - 1835

Silas sat alone in his cabin, poring over written material, once again neglecting a half-eaten sandwich. He briefly considered a jaunt into the starbase; surely a quick change of scenery could only be a positive. But there was a lot left to do, and at the moment, he had chosen to devour all of the information regarding the Kuldar and Rytain that he could lay his hands on. The last thing that he needed would be a social faux pas in at the next morning's meeting.

The door chime interrupted his studies. "Come in," he spoke.

The door whooshed open to reveal a female Bajoran petty officer dressed in command red - Vish Riva, the Captain's Yeoman.

He arched an eyebrow. "Riva, I thought that you were off duty. Shouldn't you be breaking hearts on the starbase?"

The yeoman scowled darkly in response. "First off, Captain - you know good and well that I don't have time for that nonsense. Every bit of paperwork on this tiny bird seems to flow through my office... and even a short stay at a starbase generates more paperwork than you can imagine! Besides, sir, aren't you the one still holed up in your own quarters?" The last was offered with a smirk.

In almost any other situation, Drake would have nigh exploded at such a blatant display of insolence from an NCO, but such was the relationship had had with Petty Officer Vish that he didn't bat an eye. In public, she managed a little more decorum, but in private, she had virtually no filter... and Silas found that to be refreshing.

"Fair enough," he responded. "Still, what brings you here?"

She rolled her eyes and offered Silas a PADD. "A few random documents that Starfleet wants your approval on - mostly supply requisitions and such. Also, there are several messages that came via general delivery, but are addressed to you."

The Captain's eyes narrowed a bit at this last - while not altogether unheard of, messages to a Captain were typically delivered directly. He accepted the PADD and spoke. "Thank you, Riva. I'll look these over and handle them." He fixed her with a look. "In all seriousness, I expect you to at least get a few hours of downtime tonight. Is that understood, or do I need to make it an order?"

The Bajoran gave an exaggerated sigh. "No sir, no need to make it official. I'll go find some amusement to distract myself on the starbase." She gave a mockery of a salute and left as Silas shook his head ruefully.

He fired up the PADD and flipped by the requisition paperwork - that could wait. The messages were what interested him. When he saw the sender's name, he felt an icy ball form in his stomach.

All four were from Commander Jacin Parat, Starfleet Command Personnel. The first two were orders of transfer, and when Silas read the names, he felt strongly tempted to fling the PADD against the far bulkhead.

Rockatansky.

Synlkar.

It was bad enough that he was to lose his Chief of Operations at the beginning of a fairly sensitive mission, with no time to learn to mesh with his replacement. But to also lose his Chief Tactical Officer - the man who happened to also be his Second Officer - as well as his Chief Medical Officer?

Drake's fists balled in fury. Turnover was a natural state of affairs in Starfleet; Silas knew that well. But this... he clearly had someone in Starfleet Command who was determined to set him up to fail. To be placed under Captain Jacobs, and to have fully half of his department heads reassigned... this was no coincidence. He had an enemy in some high place.

Still, the anger was impotent, and Silas knew it. He had no recourse here. The transfers would happen, and there was nothing he could do about it. Something his grandfather used to say popped into mind. Adapt, improvise, and overcome.

Silas knew that if he was to succeed as a commanding officer, he would have to learn to do just that.

11th Sempore (Thirkday), 453 E.R.
Woods near the village of Crandel (west of the Indigo river, near the Sendrian border)

Summer was in full swing, with the countryside a recent recipient of a major heat wave that had held strong now for two full weeks. This afternoon had finally witnessed the accumulation of clouds, and while the farmers blessed them, the group of travelers trudging down the dirt road did not necessarily share that sentiment. As evening fell, it had begun to drizzle. Rather than alleviate the heat, the precipitation had simply driven the humidity through the roof, causing clothing to become damp, sticky, and altogether uncomfortable. Slowly, a mist rose in response to the drizzle, which further choked away the visibility offered by the dying light of the day.

The companions expected to make Crandel by nightfall, and most - if not all - of them were looking forward to the chance to get in out of the weather for a bit. Indeed, the prospect of a dry bed and a hot meal was enough to quicken their pace.

As they walked along, the mist seemed to grow almost oppressively thick. Talcanaiion Aldavathar, sylvari pathfinder, began to feel uneasy. He had spent years out of doors, had experienced many types of weather, had witnessed the fury of nature firsthand... but this, this simply felt unnatural. Wrong.

Soon, every member of the party could feel the same things - the stifling atmosphere seemed to carry strange sounds, as well as cast strange shadows. More than once, one or more of the travelers were certain that they saw something in the mists, but the shapes always faded away, and never quite seemed to become fully visible.

The road (if one cared to use such a generous term for a dirt track in the middle of nowhere) took a sharp bend, and once the group reached the other side, they lay eyes on another group of travelers ahead. This new group - comprised of six or seven individuals on foot - was headed in the opposite direction, and though they were surely close enough to see the companions, they made no sign of recognizing this fact. Instead, they slowly shuffled along, heads down, seemingly oblivious to their surroundings, and continued to head directly for the party. If one had to wager a guess, one might speculate that these pilgrims were quite old, wounded, or ill - they were quite slow, indeed.

Originally, I had thought it would go straight to the Science ship... but it's not here yet. So, maybe to the Starbase first?
