Topic: What Evil Hides in the Hearts of Men...
Subject: let's get out of this!

Once Ta'Arms is able to move again, the party moves out, with En'Aranthea at point. As the twilights deepens, the oppressive, sticky mist deepens; odd sounds seem to echo through the night.

It takes more than an hour, but suddenly, the wooden palisade seems to materialize directly in front of the companions. A lone guard stands at the gate, torch at the ready. "Right, then!" he calls, hand nervously clenching a spear. "Who goes there? State your business!"

Once satisfied with the response, he lowers his spear. "Fair enough. Ye may enter the town of Crandel, but cause no trouble." He glances back and up on the palisade. "Let them in, Les."

As the party moves forward, the guard speaks again. "The Nicked Shill be straight ahead - only inn in town. Ye ought to be able to find a bed there."

********************************

The dirt streets of Crandel are quiet. Many of the buildings and homes are dark, but those with lit lanterns or torches shine with an almost otherworldly light against the sticky fog. As you press forward, you come across one lone, well lit building, and as you come closer, you see a wooden signboard bearing the depiction of a worn, damaged copper coin - the Nicked Shill.

The interior of the inn is well lit, and the atmosphere is fairly bustling, if not truly friendly. Several long tables run most of the length of the common room, with benches lining either side. The tables are by and large occupied by folk in plain garb such as you might see on farmers or laborers, and these locals peer at you with less than hospitable expressions; you could swear that conversation dies down upon your entry.

A young, befreckled brunette maid greets you warmly enough, however, and directs you to one of the few open spots - which is in a corner table unoccupied by locals. "Welcome to our inn, travelers," she speaks in an accent very similar to the gate guard's. "Special tonight is pork stew with peppers; we may still have some potatoes. We have strong ale and small beer," and with a measured glance at the sylvari, "and I may be able to scare up some fall wine; mayhap there's some left. We've got good bread and cheese, but it's too early in the season for much in the way of fruits."

After taking your orders, she leaves.

There are two occupants at the end of your table; both are humans in travelers' garb. One is a tall, stubble-faced, sinewy man dressed in leather armor and a brown cloak, wearing a sword at his belt. He sits easily, though you notice his eyes periodically sweep the room.

The other is a blonde woman dressed in form fitting black clothing with a purple cloak. She wears a broad-bladed knife at her belt, as well as some sort of silver pendant at her throat.

The man's eyes narrow at you as you take your seat and his hand subconsciously drifts closer to the handle of his blade, though after a few moments, he gives a curt nod and appears to slightly relax.

The woman, on the other hand, seems to view you with more interest. While she doesn't truly smile, her expression is not unfriendly. Upon closer inspection, you realize that her left cheek bears several silvered scars, one of which begins at the corner of her mouth and ends right next to her blue eye.

The serving wench is reasonably prompt, bringing the food in a timely manner; the fare is simple, but tasty enough. After a time, conversation around the room appears to pick up again.

The woman at your table moves as if to speak a greeting; the man seems about to object, but she silences him with a glare. "Well met, fellow travelers," she speaks politely, her accent leaving no doubt that she is no local. "I do not recall seeing you on the road, so I would think that you did not come from the west. Any news from the road to the east?"

Subject: it's a trap

So, there were heavily armored wererats intent on leading them into a trap. Of course, what if the wererats were, themselves, the bait? These could have been scouts that allowed themselves to be seen, in order to lure the party into the sights of a larger force... or a more deadly foe.

"It is clear they mean to lure us into an ambush," Arien spoke, "though by what is more than we know. If the gate itself was guarded by such an eldritch horror as we have already met, it would seem that a few wererats would give pause before attacking us, surprise or not."

He paused a moment. "I have been told that I never met a charge I did not like, and in all fairness, that is true. Nevertheless, I do not care to stumble into an ambush that we know is waiting. Would it be useful, I wonder, to cloak ourselves with magic? Perhaps invisibility or the like might be in order."

OOC: Regardless, Arien will keep his sword ready, as he seriously doubts he will have much time for arrows when this trap is sprung.

So, we're walking into yet another trap that we know is a trap.

I sense a theme...

If we don't get posts up soon, I'll push the game on, since pretty much everyone has agreed in the Q&A thread as to what the party should do.

This proficiency increases the rate of regained hitpoints per day, assuming you are treating the patient. It is neither magical nor immediate, however - this simply represents the fact that someone who knows how to properly bandage, clean wounds, etc can help the injured to heal quicker.

Subject: welcome back!

Welcome back!

I just restarted my "Hidden Evil" game (D&D, 2nd edition w/houserules), and all of my old players, save one, have rejoined.

That one is MIA from the Inn. I don't want to give away his spot, as he did a great job, but if we get consistently going for, say, 2-3 more weeks and he doesn't respond, I'll need a player to take up his character.

So... I can't guarantee a spot (we have 7 PCs, which is plenty to juggle), but I can give you a standby spot, with the possibility to play with us, if you like.

Remember, you don't have to write some award winning novella. A short paragraph or two is plenty.

I want to give all active players a full chance to post. Again, I'm in no position to throw stones, and this is an unexpected restart (I'm sure).

I'd love to post again on Friday/over the weekend - and make that my typical posting timeframe - but we're still playing it a bit by ear right now.

Also...

Note to self: two clerics in party makes it significantly tougher for lesser undead to be a viable way to attack the party.

Note to self, part two: drastically increase amount of undead to account for #1.

That is correct. The two gigglers are dead. You have dispatched several shamblers, and the remaining have fled the combined divine might you have channeled. Note that they are not destroyed, merely turned - the party is shielded from them, but they do continue to exist.

Okay, here you go:

After a few minutes, the paralysis wears off, enabling Ta'Arms to move again.

En'Aranthea: lightly wounded
Rae: lightly wounded
Galardil: lightly wounded
Ta'Arms: moderately wounded
Jarenion: unscathed
Blair: lightly wounded
Danon: unscathed

Sorry that took so long. I had to recreate some of my reference stuff, which took longer than I had expected. Hopefully, I'll be able to get back into a nice groove for posting.

Topic: What Evil Hides in the Hearts of Men...
Subject: round next

The companions take up a defensive ring around Ta'Arms, as the big warrior can do naught but watch. For the briefest of moments, it seems that the threat may have passed, but then, the brush fairly explodes with atrocities that insult the very order of life by their existence.

A giggling monstrosity lauches itself from cover, but En'Arenthea is there to intercept. With a graceful slash, she cleaves a huge gash in its abdomen, but rather than flee, the thing focuses its hateful visage onto the bladesinger.

On the other side of the road, several of the shuffling, corpse-like figures emerge. Rae is likewise prepared, and she drives her blade completely through the chest of one of the rotting attackers... which continues to press on in mindless determination!

Galardil tries to assist the shield maiden, but the twilight itself proves treacherous, concealing a root that entangles the priest's foot. Kith-jora's servant stumbles badly, barely managing to retain the hold on his war club - certainly doing no harm to his unliving foes.

Meanwhile, the giggling monstrosity that bore the brunt of En'Aranthea's blade gathers itself and redirects its attacks at the comely sylvari maid. It rends the air with claws, though the bladesinger is too swift to be thus struck, but it does manage to land a vicious bite with enfouled fangs to her forearm. The wound itself is not serious, though for the briefest of moments, the sylvari feels the chill of the grave try to force its grip around her very life essence. Fortunately, she is able to shake both the creature and the chill.

Meanwhile, Jarenion completes a chant, and a hand suddenly reaches from beneath the ground and grabs the giggling creature firmly around one leg. It squeals in alarm and attempts to pull free, but appears to be powerless to do so.

Danon draws his own holy symbol from beneath his tunic, and channels the power of Merca. "Begone, foul creates of the grave!" he commands, his voice seemingly larger than should be possible from his body. "Begone!" At his command, roughly half of the shuffling attackers freeze in place, then turn and retreat.

Blair moves to assist En'Aranthea, and while the restricted creature manages to twist away from his thrusting sword, the rogue does score a stab with his dagger. It glares balefully at him, however, and does not fall.

And then, the crush of bodies are upon you. The cold flesh of the grave bludgeons and grasps at the party, and while none of the wounds are severe, the sheer numbers are troubling. Fortunately, however, the giggling creature is held firm in Jarenion's magical hand, which enables En'Aranthea to end its horrible existence.

The rest of the party accounts itself well; Rae and Galardil each drop foes, and Blair and Danon combine to fell another. These creatures continue to press on mindlessly, seemingly uncaring of any harm done to them, but eventually, the companions prevail, and the twilight once more falls silent.
