I agree with most of what Eol is saying, but do note that the Captain Blair has standing orders that there always be both a science officer and a security officer on the bridge.

This is partially due to game concerns; this allows those department head players a reason to be in the "middle of the action", so to speak.

However, it's also for practical reasons - the Discovery is largely tasked to science-related roles, Blair has a science background, and it's nice to have situations like where Lieutenant Lieran was able to see for herself what was going on and come up with other scans. Harder to do this with second hand info.

Likewise, the Discovery has had attackers beamed directly to the bridge before, an Blair has lost a commanding officer himself; he believes that it makes sense to always have a security represenative on the bridge.

This can be a junior offier; if John were to lead a team to repel boarders, it would make perfect sense (he's presumably the most qualified for the task). However, it also makes sense if he wants to manage those teams from a central location.

Containment fields are in place at the breach affected decks - security personnel should be safe (provided there is not another direct hit to an already breached deck).

Starfleet warships often/usually have marines. Discovery is not a warship. She has a significant complement of civilians, for instance.

Also, for the record, I love reading the heavy accent. I'd rather you kept it and, if necessary, gave a "universal translator" version for unclear spots in the q&a.

Or, you know, let people use the q&a to ask questions if they don't understand something.

The physical damage to the ship is on decks 20 to 24. The intruder alert came from deck 11. Presumably, an attacker wants to disable the ship, but not try to enter an area that could be exposed to vacuum due to the damage.

A few notes: I though I had posted this info in the Q&A, but apparently not.

I will likely NPC Commander Pantanko (Chief Engineer) if we need a post from her, as Celeste is in a flux state right now (but will be posting soon).

As for running? That may be tough. As it so happens, we are close to (but should have been far enough away as to be safe from) the romulan neutral zone. Dicovery was traveling at impulse because the warp drive is offline for maintenance and recalibration right now, with a completion ETA of another day or so.


edit: I know that I exchanged PMs about the warp drive, but could have SWORN that I mentioned it inthe Q&A before. I did not.

Folks, I'm not trying to be horrible here and railroad us to oblivion. I'm really not.

USS Discovery, main bridge - 0319


Captain Blair focused intently on the viewscreen as chaos whirled around the bridge. As senior officers appeared and relieved the night watch personnel, orders were relayed. Neither the tactical or operations chiefs had sought his input or okay to handle the imminent emergencies under their direct areas of responsibilty - which was exactly how the Captain wanted it.

MacTavish voiced his suggestion. "I recommend tha’ we retreat ta a distance outside o’ known taripedo range ‘til I c’n get wi’ Sensors an’ ‘ave some tinkerin’ done, sair. Per’aps these sneaky buggers’ll give a bit o’ a chase an’ we’ll catch a wink o' their energy signature ef naught else... Give us somethen’ ta point at, aye?"

As always, the Scotsman had a sound plan - and it echoed what the Captain had himself been thinking. "Agreed, Lieutenant," he answered. Fixing his gaze on the young man at the helm - the Deck Officer had notified the bridge of Lieutenant Zavaleta's accident, but the aCFCO had yet to make it onto the bridge - Blair gave specific orders.

"Ensign, evasive manuevers immediately. Take us in the opposite direction of the damage, then come about to face this general position." That would put the Discovery in optimal firing position.

The Discovery lept into motion, and for a moment, it seemed that the plan would work. An energy signature appeared on the sensor readouts; a slight shimmer appeared to denote the position of a craft, but it disappeared within an instant. Suddenly, the deck violently pitched again - the worst such incident yet - and this time, the fallout was much more serious. Warning indicators lit up on terminals all across the bridge. The situation was truly dire, as the computer itself chimed in.

=/\=WARNING!=/\= it intoned in a pleasant, but serious, female voice. =/\=Hull breach detected on decks twenty and twenty-four.=/\=

If possible, things got even worse from there. As the deflector shields appeared to "flicker" for a moment, then yet another warning indicator popped up - this time, on the tactical console.

Exactly what Eol just said. Don't sweat the details of deck locations, names for thingamajigs, etc. We're HAPPY to help you with that stuff.

Worry about your character's personality and how they react to situations, and you'll be fine.

...it's easy (especially with some of the amazing players in this game) to worry so much about crafting the perfect character, the perfect post, the perfet reactions... that the game just loses the fun. It becomes a chore.

Then, you get to where you don't want to post, you lag behind, then you start to feel overwhelmed at everything going on.

Keep it simple. Where is your character when the floor starts swinging around like crazy? What does she think about it? What does she do?

That's all there is to it.

If you want to expand on this, nobody will argue. If you feel like bringing in an NPC or two, go for it. But don't feel like you have to do those things - just cover the basics, let your character's personality show through, an the rest will take care of itself.

You have the gist of it. Alpha shift, weekdays, is when your senior staff would usually be at their primary spot (bridge, sickbay, etc). Of course, being a department head means that you probably do work long hours.

With that being said, there are many times when this may not apply; MacTavish might have a junior officer on the bridge while he works in his office, performs inspections, etc. If we're simply puttering along between star systems, Captain Blair may well be in his ready room as opposed to sitting in the big chair. And so on.
