It's a freeform game, so feel free to do whatever you like, as long as it continues to fit in with what has been posted so far... or if it contradicts, make sure that you have a good reason for it.

This is Eol's little side quest/idea, so it's good form to at least confer with him before you post new material/findings/etc.

Not at all, though there are no department head slots open right now. However, if you would be interested in playing a junior officer or enlisted, we absolutely have room for you.

Sending you a PM now...

Stardate: 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Captain's Ready Room - 0720

Commander Drake sat at his desk, fuming impotently at the viewscreen. Having had no interaction in the past with Admiral Harding, he found her thinly veiled distaste - to say nothing of her barely concealed hinted threats - to be aggravating and frustrating. He forced himself to take deep, measured breaths, and to instead focus on the aspects of the situation that he could influence - the logistics of the new mission, how it would impact the crew, what preparations would need to be made. Certainly, a staff meeting was in order; first, an order for the new heading would need to be placed, then a meeting for oh eight hundred with the department heads to brief them on their orders.

Just as he was about to key the comm, it beat him to the punch and chirped.

=/=Bridge to Captain Drake,=/= came the XO's voice. =/=We’ve pinged an unknown contact just outside our patrol route, sir. We’re en route to intercept.=/=

Talk about your timing, he mused as he rose to his feet. "On my way, lieutenant," he answered.

Stardate: 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine, Bridge - 0725

Silas strode onto the bridge, annoyance likely still evident on his face to those who bothered to look closely - though, with the detection of an unknown contact, it could be easily mistaken as seriousness about the situation at hand. Not that anyone was likely looking at the Captain, anyway... not after six weeks of boring patrols.

Commander Drake nodded to Lieutenant Zai as he moved to take the Captain's chair. "Report, Lieutenant," he spoke directly. "What are we looking at, what do we know?"

(OOC: assuming a summation of the items mentioned prior to his entering of the bridge)

At roughly a quarter of a million kilometers, the contact was already within effective weapons range. It was interesting, then, how the Peregrine had failed to pick up the object until now. Immediately, Drake began issuing orders.

"Helm, slow to one quarter impulse until we have a better idea what we are looking at. Lieutenant Moriden, tell me everything you can about it. Let's put it onscreen, full magnification, please. Rock, bring the phasers online. Don't lock them on yet, but I want to be ready in case this is pirate-related."

Without waiting for responses, Drake keyed his commbadge. "Drake to Tesenblen. Lieutenant, I need a science presence on the bridge immediately."

Pausing barely long enough to receive a reply, he keyed the badge again. "Drake to sickbay. Doctor Synklar, we have what looks like a possible escape pod on our sensors. Be ready in the event that we need to treat any wounded."

Orders given, Silas sat back in the command chair just a bit. "So, what do we have here?" he mused. "Is this from a Federation vessel, or someone else?"

James, if you had been here a few weeks ago, the title would have seemed appropriate. We've seen a couple of games jump up since then, activity has spiked more than 1000 page views per day on average... so maybe this thread was premature.

Tann says cool, I have set your character up on the Peregrine roster. Made a couple of minor edits to the timeline, as you had a two year gap from Academy graduation to your first assignment. The character is set as an NPC right now, but feel free to jump in at any time - or just post every now and then as you can. NPCs add flexibility!

The Chief Engineer is the second highest ranking officer on our ship. However, he is not a line officer - he is not eligible to assume command in normal circumstances.

A line officer (Captain, Executive officer, Second officer) would exert authority over a higher ranking non-line officer - but only if it's in the course of executing their duties in regard to command of the ship.

So, let's say the second officer has command of the bridge... which happens on a very regular basis, as the captain cannot keep 24 hour bridge watches.

So, the bridge operations officer of the shift notices an anomaly in the impulse engines. The second officer, currently in command on the bridge, would call down to engineering and order that the issue be investigated. If the chief engineer was on duty at the time, he would be obligated to follow the order.

Let's say we have an away team, with some junior grade lieutenant placed in charge by the captain. Everyone else in the away team would be subject to the lowly ltjg's orders for the duration of that mission.

That said, the away team scenario is pretty unlikely. Typically, the captain, XO, or 20 will be in charge of those operations, and they will hold equal or greater rank to all other potential participants aside from - again - the chief engineer. Who would again fall under the chain of command provisions.

However, in all other situations, the a junior officer (the second officer, in your questions) would be expected to observe all normal customs and courtesies. This absolutely means that the lieutenant commander would be referred to as "sir", and that proper deference is given in all non chain of command scenarios.

Ayrn sent me nice pic of a suggested Saber class bridge, but I found one that I feel is more accurate. It's posted on the first page of the Q&A, and features a layout that goes almost perfectly with the description I made in that same post.

I see an extra chair by the Captain that shouldn't be there, but that's my only real gripe. Pretend it's not in the picture.

There are tons of image results at Google for the blueprints, though the likely don't go into the level of detail that the site you linked has!
