This will be the official Q&A thread for my modern horror game, "Zombies in Chicago".

Please post questions and such here, so that I don't have to look everywhere for them.

The main game thread is up, but please do not post there until I have made one more post, myself (the game does not actually begin until October 26th - my current post is dated October 16th).

October 16, 2014
O'Brian's Pub (Chicago, Illinois), 5:30 PM

It's the end of the world as we know it...

"...and it is... GOOOONNNNEEEE! The Cubs have clinched the pennant! The Cubs have clinched the pennant! Cubs three, Giants two, on a walkoff home run by Joey Franklin!" The entire bar was engufled in a roar of joy as Len Kasper's exultant voice belted from the various television sets within O'Brian's. "One hundred and six years of frustration is finally over - the Cubs are headed to the World Series after winning the NLCS, four games to two!"

Drinks flowed freely as the patrons of O'Brian's celebrated this truly historic day for the city of Chicago. Grown men wept at the chance to finally see their beloved Cubs return to the fall classic. For a few brief, shining moments, all was right in the world.

O'Brian's Pub, 6:15 PM

"For God's sake," Patrick O'Brian spat from behind the bar, "you'd think we were naught better than Sox fans."

The television broadcasts of cheering fans and spraying champagne had been replaced by more somber fare - rioting had broken out downtown at first, then spread across the city. Worse still, it appeared that the rioting was far more involved than broken windows, stolen televisions, and the odd overturned car - the news vans and helicopters were relaying disturbing images of people brutally attacking one another in the street. "Death toll in the dozens," came the anchor's voice.

"Turn that crap off, Patty! We're tryin' to be happy here," came a request from one of the patrons.

Good advice, O'Brian mused to himself as he changed the channel.

October 16, 2014
O'Brian's Pub, 7:05 PM

"Everybody okay?" the voice came from a uniformed police officer who had stuck his head in the door. "Folks, I want you to listen carefully. The riots are getting worse, and are getting close to this area. I need to ask you to remain calm, and to stay inside here until we get the situation contained. Patty, I'd appreciate it if you'd lock and bar the door - there's been a lot of people hurt, and if it ends up here like it's been elsewhere... well, it could take awhile for us to answer any specific calls. Looks like our hands are gonna be pretty full."

The owner of the bar nodded his head. "Aye, James, I'll do just that. Thanks for the heads up."

Moments after the police officer left the bar, an explosion from somewhere not terribly distant shook the entire room. Wordlessly, Patrick locked and bolted the door.

*******************************

October 16, 2014
O'Brian's Pub, 9:45 PM

...something wicked this way comes.

It had come first as a scratching sound at the door. Soon after, there came a pounding like someone attempting to break in to the bar.

Next came the screams - voices wailing in unspeakable agony, cries of pain and terror. Pops, like those of firecrackers - only everyone inside knew that this was no merriment, but the discharge of small arms fire.

More screams.

A pounding again at the door, this time accompanied by the voice of a woman pleading in terror. "Help! Please help me! Let me in, please, oh God!" A scream of agony, cut short as the door was opened to let her in... too late.

Those that would survive the coming days might all have different tales to tell, but for everyone present that night in Patrick O'Brian's bar, this shared moment would be forever seared into their memories. A bloody, nigh-beheaded corpse lying on the ground at the doorway, while one of them stood over her remains.

Oh, it looked human enough - save the bloodshot eyes with pupils that nearly eclispsed every trace of the white sclera. A huge, bloody wound, as if from an axe, openly wept from the figure's side, though he seemed to give it little notice. Speaking of blood, the mouth, face, and neck were covered in the stuff - and from the looks of it, it belonged to the dead woman on the ground.

It screamed in fury and rushed into the bar, but Patrick's shotgun roared and blew the man back out into the street. Someone screamed, someone else demanded that the police be called, but any fool cold see and hear that the police would not come... not tonight.

Maybe not ever again.

More otherworldly screams filled the streets, and the door was quickly locked and bolted again as the place of drinking and festivities became an impromptu place of prayer.

Topic: Zombies in Chicago - D20 Modern Recruitment
Subject: Zombies in Chicago - D20 Modern

Okay, folks, here goes. I have resisted the urge to run this game for two years, now, but can ignore the siren song no longer.

Consider this the official recruitment thread for a modern day zombie infestation game.

Civilization as we know it ended a few weeks ago following an outbreak of a mutant virus that turns the living into slavering, vicious monsters - and denies the dead their rightful rest. These mindless vestiges of humanity are not the shuffling, clumsy oafs of the old zombie flicks, but terrifying, fast, and deadly killers, ala "28 Days Later" or "I am Legend".

I will be using a modified version of the D20 modern RPG as my rule base. Don't worry - you need know NOTHING about the rules to play! I need a party of four to six players who are interested in running for their lives, fighting when they must, all with the grim knowledge that it is more likely a matter of when, no if, they will perish.

Unless you give me an excellent reason otherwise, you will all start in the basement of a bar in Chicago, Illinois, where you have been barricading yourselves from the horror of the death throes of civilization. Sadly, while the alcohol supply is still going strong, the food stores are all but gone, and you must now face the very real likelihood that rescue is not coming. How will you proceed? Well, that's up to you.

If you are interested in joining, please keep the following in mind:

  • 1. This game may proove to be exceedingly lethal. Like any good zombie flick, one or more of you will almost certainly die. It is entirely possible that none of you will survive.

If you do die, you are free to rejoin the game as another survivor.

  • 2. To be considered for play, I need you to provide a brief character description - name, age, gender, physical appearance, profession, and a brief background/personality. Don't spend ages on this, since you may die quickly, but don't ignore it, either. Military and police backgrounds will make you a bit better with firearms than say, an average Joe, while a doctor or nurse will certainly be much better at first aid than the rest of the party. Use common sense.

  • 3. To be considered for a spot, please submit a realistic, normal person. Please do not send me character concepts for Jason Bourne type assasins, 6th degree black belts, super geniuses who can create mega weapons from junk, etc. I will make fun of you and delete your application.

This is not to say that you can't be skilled at something, or even at several things, but your ex-Navy SEAL, college professor, martial arts expert, photographic memory, olympic athelete won't get in the game. Please don't ask.

  • 4. If you decide to play, you are comitting to a minimum of one to two quality posts per week. By quality, I mean two to three short paragraphs. You don't have to write a novella every time, but please give me more than "My guy bashes the zombie in the head." Ignore this at your mortal peril.

  • 5. I have been known to flake out. Right now, my work shcedule is good, and I ought to be able to handle a little zombie bloodshed, but I may post slower than you may want to deal with, or need to take a week off every now and then. Consider yourself forewarned.

If you have further questions, please let me know. Otherwise, we will start as soon as I have enough approved character concepts.

Arien frowned, not just at Dapple's findings, but at the entire situation. Not that it was any surprise - they knew that something must be amiss, else the party would not have been sought out to come here. Nevertheless, Arien felt the familiar tension in the pit of his stomach - the missing priests, the unnatural quiet, the sheer ominousness of this place - all added up to spell impending trouble.

That someone would hope to be able to tell from outside that the doors had been disturbed... well, that was truly strange.

"I wonder," the knight breathed, "what sort of thing could be contained within these doors? Why would someone do such a thing?" Of course, no one had a good answer.

"Right, then. Let us be ready for a fight, just in case." The knight drew Liun'naur and spoke the name, causing the mystic blade's flame to ignite. "Maximus, up here with me. Kilgim, you and Char follow. Let Dapple and Flynn take up the rear. Let us move in quickly, get our bearings, and determine if we need to defend ourselves. Although..."

Arien paused for a moment. "Dapple," he asked, "is there any chance that Sunset could possibly peer in through a window, and be able to tell you anything of use? No need for us to storm in, blades bared, if the situation does not call for it."

Depending on the outcome of any potential aerial spying, the knight readied himself with a final whispered prayer to Heironeus. Surely the god could hear the prayer here at his temple? If the pseudodragon could offer no reason to dissuade it, Arien would yank open the door and lunge inside.

Check it out, folks - today, we have a guest comic from Rules of Rule, an awesome, sparkly, trippy Dutch webcomic.

If you like the comic, please go ahead and vote it up via reddit... do beware the trolls.

What do you think? I love the art; it's very cool to see LD characters through someone else's art. The pony is particularly cool, I think.

So I saw. Seems like he's the sort that likes to leave tons of negative comments in the hope that someone takes offense, so that he can swoop in and show of his "clearly" superior intellect and viewpoints.
