Topic: Disney Buys Lucasfilm
Subject: well...

Thinking about it further, Disney actually is at least one of the best choices. The main thing that (in my opinion) went wrong with the prequels is that they put too much effort into explaining things. They essentially had to squish an entire persons life story into three movies while under the mo of explaining just about anything and everything. while making that one person 'special' and going too far with all of the above.

Under further thought, I don't think Disney will fall into the same problem. They're pretty good at not explaining things. Ie tron. We are given the grid and matter to data conversion, and no one explains it and everything is good.

The other thing I think about in the back of my mind though is that all stories end at one point or another. Expanding things starts targetting a smaller and smaller audience because like all things there are those who like the expanded universe and those that don't. Pushing things into Canon status can segment a series' following who preferred one take over the other, etc.

So would it have been better to leave it? Not sure, but I don't think it would have been a bad decision either. Sometimes you just have to let the story go, and leave the rest of the fun to the audience to interpret what ifs and conjectures.

I have nothing critical to post prior to 800 that can't be included as a semi back post for additional flavour for my response to 800.

Synopsis, Leiran meets with Ruea for tea, and some background information happens.

Subject: Well

A friend of mine and I were discussing it a bit. There are many ways they could take it. So far it seeme like they intend to go along the expanded universe route with a sequel trilogy.

Unfortunately, this can be good or bad. There is a good foundation of material to use, but at the same time, the capacity to really mess things over is there, particularly with some of the things they have going.

For instance, I am not particularly enthused by the now real possibility of kingdom hearts crossing over with star wars...

Subject: Post up for Rena

I wasn't kidding when I said Rena doesn't get angry. She gets focused, and then when her focus is broken, well...

That's when she gets flustered.

She definitely has a lot going on in her head right now... adrenaline rush + brainwave doesn't exactly let her stop/crash that quickly, even if she'd like that to be the case

Stardate 2368.07.08
USS Discovery, main bridge - 0321

In the heat of the moment, was it really a bad thing to have a voice whispering in your ear? Rena didn't think so. Two in harmony surpasses one in perfection. She muttered under her breath, seemingly in a fast paced conversation with herself.

"- the sensor relays. If we triangulate impact trajectories -...- consider core power, are they targeting power sources? -...- sensing our sensors? Maybe-...-"

She wasn't listening to the ops officers. They knew how to make the most of the ship. It was Rena's position to figure out the what, if there was something that could be done with resources that wasn't immediately apparent. Salvage, improvise to run, or even turn the tide.

Yet the sensor readings weren't cooperating as she had hoped. Just how fast was this thing adapting to them? Rena typed at the console, trying to see how to articulate the sensor cycles into a stochastic system that even Ridley wouldn't be able to follow. Maybe if-

"Cancel red alert. Computer, cancel simulation."

Wait, what?

Rena stared as the console changed back to normal, nothing remaining of the chaos it was showing just seconds before. She blinked as her heart and mind stopped racing, slowing down enough to register what was said.

At that point, Blair was addressing everyone. The whole thing was a rather elaborate simulation. An exercise and drill.

Rena looked a bit flustered as she rubbed the back of her head. That was a good thing, right? No real danger, they were all okay, and things went, well, they'd find out how things went at eight hundred. Yet, the scientist in her was actually kind of disappointed. An actual hybridization of three technologies. The thought of studying something like that sent a shiver down her back. She took a breath and chuckled.

"That was an incredible exercise." She breathed, taking in a deep breath.

=/\= Uzuki to Leiran, does this mean I should stop my simulation? =/\=

Rena shook her head even though Shion wasn't there too see, "No, just put the simulation away for now and get some rest. I think I'd like to take a look at it later."

=/\= Roger, Uzuki out. =/\=

Speaking of other loose ends... Rena tapped her comm, "Leiran to Ridley, you probably guessed but you can put the sensor systems back into storage."

=/\= I almost have one probe outfitted. Should I dismantle it? =/\=

Rena shook her head again, "No, leave it for now. Just tidy up and store that one, though do make sure it is labelled correctly. Get some rest after."

=/\= Okay ma'am, Ridley out. =/\=

One thing left. Rena tapped her comm for the last time, "Leiran to Zohm, please return to the bridge to resume your shift."

=/\= I'll be up in a moment, turbolifts are a bit crammed. =/\=

Rena chuckled, "No rush. Leiran out."

Taking another breath, Rena rubbed at her forehead as she felt her body's adrenaline level dropping. In addition, coming down from the eur-bloody-eka state was almost as intense as reaching it, just in the opposite way. She could feel a hint of sadness as well. Either way, she was definitely going to need a cup of tea later.

Kudos to Olan that's the one thing I was not expecting in the least.

Now I am not even sure how Leiran will react. On the one hand relief, on the other, disappointment at no new tech and science to be found right now? Hehe, I'll figure it out ...

I'm just fortunate that I can fill in those blanks pretty well since I kind of have an overactive visualization and simulation capacity.

Perfect for a techie or sciency or mad sciency or mad pseudomagicscience-y characters.

"What did you say? Romulan, Klingon, and Borg?"

Rena almost looked stupified, but that look lasted only a second before her eyes widened. "Of course! Now we get it!"

Rena tapped her comm badge, "Leiran to Foreman, talk to me. Romulan cloaking device emissions. Klingon cloaking device emissions."

=/\= Well, one could be detected perhaps by gravitic sensors. Yes, yes that would do it, maybe. A sweep of metaphasic frequencies, perhaps oh, or yes, yes, maybe tachyon- =/\=

Rena quickly began furiously typing at the console, "Thank you. Leiran to Ridley, get some probes outfitted with tachyon sensor technology ready for launch as soon as possible. In the meantime, we're going to be adjusting our sensor relays."

Not caring if the connection was still open or not, Rena seemed to talk animatedly to herself. Her brain was on overdrive, and she could feel it. Maybe it was adrenaline, or maybe it was the surge of the scientist grasping at the unknown and grabbing on to something.

"... - alternation of sweeps. We need to consider - ... - yes. Assimilated - ... - maybe not. -...- hybridization of the comp-"

Taking in a breath, Rena looked over her progress, and actually spoke to acknowledge there were other people on the bridge, "Captain, I'm working by the assumption this thing is a hybrid and it alternates its cloaking types by adaptation. Randomizing sensor sweeps and focusing on known anti-cloaking tactics."

Taking a hand off the console but keeping the other at the railing in case of another impact, Rena tapped her com yet again, "Leiran to Uzuki, simulation module, try hybridizing known Borg, Klingon and Romulan technologies. Stealth and general fighters in particular."

=/\= Uh, okay, right away ma'am. =/\=

"Let's see if we can't figure out this thing." Rena muttered.

Subject: No sleep for the sleepless

Stardate: 2368.07.08
USS Discovery, Lt. Leiran’s Quarters – 0246

Rena could not sleep. Sleep this 'night' was just a comfortable elusive blanket hiding in the closet, in some box, covered with dust, hidden inside more boxes, and underneath a piano. Her knees ached, and her shoulder kept shocking her awake with short sharp bursts of pain. Phantom pain. It was getting worse lately, but then, that was something she was used to. She knew it was like this every month, give or take. She knew just as well that she would not be sleeping any time soon.

Well, if we're awake, we can work. The more done, the less to do later. Rena thought as she sat up, before catching herself, I can work.

"Computer, lights on please."

A few metallic thunks were heard as Rena wandered to her dresser, pulling out her uniform, adjusting her pants and adding the padding between her metal feet and her shoes. Rena added the padding to her right arm, before encasing it in a shoulder-length glove, and wearing a matching, though shorter glove on her left hand. Finally, she put on the blue uniform jacket, attached her headband, and nodded to herself in the mirror with confidence.

Rena still had science to do...

USS Discovery, Lt. Leiran’s Lab – 0310

=/\= ... I thought it would also be a good idea to advise you to take the opportunity to sleep rather than work. You are busy as our department head already after all. =/\=

"I'm well aware of the time, Aqinna." Rena replied, "But I had a brainwave, and wanted to explore it while it was fresh in my mind." She lied, placing the petri dish in her hands on her workstation.

=/\= Wouldn't the more logical thing have been to note it for purusal during your waking hours? =/\= Selaria asked.

"Yes, but as you know, I'm Human, and can be illogical." Rena chuckled as her visor lowered, obsuring her face and magnifying her vision to look at the cell culture.

=/\= Well, next time do consider it. As you say, you are Human, not Vulcan, so you can not afford to push your body to the same degree. =/\= Selaria replied, a bit of concern in her voice.

"Thanks for looking out for me, and for answering my questions." Rena replied sincerely, "I've been following cell growth for a while, and it's always good to have a second opinion."

=/\= Not a problem, Lt. Aqinna out. =/\=

"Now, let's see what we have here... this batch seemed promis-"

Rena felt herself slammed into the floor. She groaned as her right shoulder and knees ached from the impact, having hit the floor with her right elbow first, her left hand going to her right shoulder to rub it. It was perhaps a good thing that she just stayed still a minute to recover.

No flying this time, Rena felt herself hit the side of the workbench, but it wasn't nearly as bad an impact. Taking the opportunity, she quickly got to her feet, bracing herself in case of another.

"Did we hit an ast-"

The words stopped in her throat as she looked down. The petri dish was gone. A quick surveying of the floor revealed her worst fear. The dish was broken, the culture within already contaminated just by open air. Rena gritted her teeth, but took a breath. There was always more science to do, one way or another.

She tapped the comm badge. "Leiran to Zohm. What's going on up there?"

=/\= We haven't the foggiest. Two hits by... something, nothing showing up on sensors though. =/\= Zohm replied from his post at the bridge.

"I'm on my way. Ensign, you get down to the labs and help the others. Make sure everything's intact." Rena said, quickly picking up and disposing of the petri dish.

=/\= Roger. =/\=

Rena tapped her comm again as she walked out of her lab, "Leiran to Uzuki."

=/\= Shion here, what's going on? =/\=

"Not sure, get a simulation module started as soon as you can. I'll get more information to you as it comes." Rena added as she strode to the turbolift, "Get in touch with Lt. Foreman and Ensign Ridley too. I'm heading to the bridge."

=/\= Got it. Uzuki out. =/\=

USS Discovery, Main Bridge - 0319

Following closely behind Serene, Rena quickly took up her place at the now-vacant science console, catching just the last bit of Mac's suggestion.

"Per’aps these sneaky buggers’ll give a bit o’ a chase an’ we’ll catch a wink o’ their energy signature ef naught else… Give us somethen’ ta point at, aye?”

"Even if they don't move, the increased range might allow us to get a better scan of their weapon's emissions, perhaps help get something to identify what we're dealing with." Leiran added, her visor retracting as she surveyed the console displays. "No readings." She confirmed.

Fayt acknowledges the instruction with a few beeps of confirmation. Direct translation would yield "memory access - map constructing". She first checks her databanks to check if a map was uploaded earlier, and if not, attempts to convert the image she snapshot earlier as they left the ship into a three dimensional hologram for them to quickly purview via her holoprojector.

Assuming they start moving before she can finish the compilation, however, Fayt will closely move with them, using her propulsion to keep up as needed while continually looking around and taking more pictures to aid in the 3 dimensional map construction running in the background.

Topic: A Star Trek Question
Subject: Going to have to agree

As an interplanetary organization, Starfleet is bound to have encountered a vast variety of cultures and religions. Take earth for instance. It's only one planet and there is however many cultures and belief systems. Now multiply that by x where x is some arbitrary value between 1 and infinity, because the setting has an infinite universe setup.

Now, Starfleet promotes interplanetary harmony among its members. Consequently, that requires a commitment to understanding and equality. Therefore, upholding a strict enforcement to regulate a specific way of life among its officers is rather counter intuitive and grounds by which to provoke disharmony. By contradiction, this can not be the case.

To conclude, I think that the absence of belief systems on the ships in the actual show are more due to producer choices than as a result of continuity. Wouldn't be out of place for there to be some regulations that cause some belief systems to be disallowed while on duty, but this would be due to practicality, not an enforcement.

The actual quote may just be 'wikipedia magic' misinterpreting or misquoting. Or the producer providing it by some choice based on external factors, not necessarily continuity.

And Bob is awesome. QED.
