There's a few roles I can go over the top with in regards to figuring things out and getting hyperactive with theories floating around my mind.

Low tech/no magic environment: Jury-rigger - making stuff that's useful out of what is available.
Low tech/high magic enviroment: Magic theorist - figure out how magic works.
High tech/no magic environment: Hacker/Cybernaut - VR is your friend. Or Techie - pushing tech to the extreme
High tech/high magic environment: Any of the above and Magitech theorist - bringing two worlds together that were already the same world to begin with; just that no one ever realized it

Steampunk is kind of intermediate between low and high tech, since it has elements of both.

Elly, therefore, is both a jury-rigger and a techie

A wall blows up in front of Ardis for no apparent reason, and a blackened person with a bunch of brick blows past him, he turns to look at the blown-up person, hears a voice behind him, "Oh, sorry! Did I hit you too?"

And thus a young(er) Artis met Engie. No awkwardness involved, just an explosive Engie grinning sheepishly at Ardis through a blown up wall.

Elly (also answers to Engie)

Born and raised in the city, Elly was born into a life of luxury. Such a life did not suit her tastes, however. She loved to tinker with things. When she got a musical jewellery box as a little girl, she took it apart and put it back together as a hobby. She still has the box, in her room on the Dawn Falcon, consistently retuning it and changing the melody cylinders to play different songs on a whim. As a result, she ended up enrolled in a school for mechanics.

There were several incidents that occured over the course of her school life, yet, even as she was first deemed dangerous, it eventually became clear that for her explosive results now and then, she had real talent when she put her heart into what she built. However, one incident would change the course of her life. A transfer student came into her classroom, asked to work with her, and called her 'shorty'. Despite the attempt at an affectionate nickname, everyone in the room immediately knew something would happen.

Sure enough, halfway through the hands-on class, Elly blew the transfer student through the wall in her overeager state to show how talented she was, refinishing a furnace piece, as well as get him back for calling her short. As it happened, Ardis was passing by in the street. He wasn't hit but that would be how Ardis first encountered Elly. It wouldn't be long before she dropped out of school to join Ardis on the Dawn Falcon. She didn't even make any remark about how young he was to be captain; it was as though she didn't care how old he was. She just found him and the ship absolutely fascinating, having never even seen outside of the city.

Perhaps that makes her a runaway. As it stands, however, Elly couldn't be happier, being part of something much bigger than she was exposed to in her safe, comfortable life in the city. Plus, she got along well with the ship. She didn't complain at the occasional explosion, and Elly kept her running well.

Description: Elly is small. There is no denying that fact, as she stands at a full 5' flat. In addition, she absolutely hates being called short. Despite her small body, she is not completely slender, leaning a bit on the muscular side due to often carrying around spare parts and tools. She tends to wear overalls and gloves, partly because she's almost always working on something, and also to cover up the burn marks along her pale skin. Elly does have nicer attire from her life in the city, but prefers not to ruin her nice clothes by working in them. She always has her toolbelt with her, and very consistently will have the right tool for the job, due to the number that she carries. She wears simple glasses, mostly when working as she's farsighted. While she's wearing her glasses, her eyes are a bright blue, alert and keen. When she's not wearing her glasses, however, her eyes are a deep blue, more like reflecting pools in the way the irises look. She has black hair, haphazardly cut to a short length, uneven and almost messy looking, due to maintaining it herself. A salon worker, Elly is not. She never talks about her hair beyond the basic answers, or why she adamantly keeps it cut.

Elly always knows exactly where an explosion took place, and also has a strange talent for surviving them, on occasion being completely unharmed, particularly if the explosion was caused by her. If asked about it, she just shrugs and mentions offhandedly something about 'dodge charms'.

Needless to say, Elly would also have been available for a couple of years on the ship already if there were particular devices that people would like to have attempted. Kriea has final say of course, but I'm pretty sure I'd have a good idea of what Elly can and can't do with clockwork and steam tech

Now where did I put those plans for a flintlock-gun-scythe...

Totally what went through my head when I read 'engineer'

Side note: If you're wondering what's being talked about by a 'mountain range chasing us', google image search 'Jhen Mohran'... it's pretty big

With that done, all that was left to do was wait.

The passageway was not the most pleasent to say the least. Still, the Computer had to know what was happening, so, all that needed doing was moving forward.

"Brighte, take point. Steam, second. Slipp. Blowz. Me. Ammpe."

I am expecting something regarding the character to be PM'd to me by those who are interested. It'll kind of look like a resume, except, not for an actual job (unless you want it to be, applying for something in Pyron, but that's your decision)

It's basically a character sheet without the numbers. I call it a profile After all, I can't generate the statistics or campaign without any information on the characters I'm working with.

From the sound of your post though, you already have a good understanding of the setting, and that's always a good thing

To clarify, just in case it's needed, Artie's notion is splitting up the group, so that if you connected the dots of each person's position, you'd end up with an X, with Artie and Blowz at the centre, and the others investigating different offshoot passages.

Totally agreeing with Kriea here re: the boyfriend. If he's overstepping his bounds and deciding stuff for you without your consent, then clearly he is not worth keeping as a boyfriend; first it's characters, then could be finances, names for the children, where the house is... not saying it always goes that far but it can just spiral.

"To love one another is to walk through life together and to choose the path that is most beneficial to the both of you." To elaborate on that, it requires understanding between both sides. If he wants a semi-submissive girlfriend that he can decide things for, and you don't want that role, then that's not your fault and the relationship shouldn't be pushed forward.

Of course, the best thing is to just talk about it. If you don't like something, tell them if you haven't already.

That aside, to me, the most important thing is to play characters I can be comfortable with. That's why I tend not to play male characters myself; I usually don't feel comfortable about it, and that's my own reason.

I'm totally agreeing with Kriea's point about how race/gender are more like guidelines in D&D. The game is making a book or movie. Books and movies are more interesting with a variety of characters that don't necessarily follow externally placed expectations.

There's a reason why 'outcast' character's aren't out of the question, as long as they're done well

I prefer my dual wielding... although if skyrim had scythes, then maybe I'd pick up some two-handed

Guess it still counts as shooting... only, I don't use arrows.

I use a supercharged lightning bolt (dual cast)

Or, if I'm in need of souls, use dual conjured blades (have the soul steal perk for those... so much better than soul trap spell)

Not human souls though

That'd be evil

Located in Complete Adventurer, Dungeon Delver is a prestige class with Rogue as the most likely foundation. I'm looking for a Base Class.

On further thought, that actually might be the primary reason why rogues are common. When it comes to class skills, the Rogue has the widest range available to it, which makes it a strong candidate for people who like skills to reflect their character's background, as well as for minmax players.

Continuing further, that's probably the main reason why I seldom play a Fighter; they get so few skills, which makes it really difficult for a Fighter's sheet to reflect a character's background if it deviates at all from the standard 'military recruit' archetype. Or at least that's the feeling I've gotten.

Logically speaking, there was little point as to conjecture, and even computers had to wait on futureints for computation. Artie waited by the side of the primary hallway, leaning against the wall in between the junctions that he had supposed that the others had gone down.

As a girl who has pretty much only played female characters, I've definitely some patterns I have a tendency to follow, though it may be more a quirk of me as a player and my preferences rather than something to do with the setting.

I love spellcasters. Well, no, that's not quite true To elaborate further, I have a tendency to really like magic systems. In Witchcraft, characters are more likely than not to have magic. Characters in Exalted are, well... demigods kinda. Buuuut when it comes to D&D, I don't mind playing the spellcaster, but I don't necessarily like the system. Of course, that's a whole other rant of mine which really is just personal preference. (for the curious, I have a tendency to be easily miffed by arcane vs divine magic)

Back to the characters themselves though... I have a tendency to make 'outcast' characters. Characters that don't visibly belong in a majority. That in itself isn't too bad but it's just a habit of mine. I try not to go too far out there.

Examples of my chars:
C - computer hacker, side stepped her human appearance a bit with her cat ears and eyes (futuristic setting). Playful and cat like.

Linnix - I'm not really claiming her as my character, since I picked up the character after her original player left, but the way I had her develop, she eventually got over a short temper and overall became a better person, discovering what she wanted to follow. Would've taken the Shadowdancer route

Riina - ranger, though more druidic in her views. Followed a sort of 'defender of the forest' archetype, though what exactly she defended was the natural order; she had no quarrel with travellers, or lumberjacks even (provided they didn't take too much). Had a tendency to use comparisons to animals in order for comprehension of situations (not in a degrading way, more just compared similar scenes to understand them better, and to better judge morale, motivation levels of opponents, and similar)

Roseanne (real name Janelle) - *really* weird girl. Weird in the sense that she has an absolute paranoia about clocks and time. An adept fencer, and very strong, uncontrolled power.

I think that's enough examples from me, otherwise this post will be huuuge.

In the end though, I've had my share of rogues, clerics, rangers, wizards, druids... Apart from the 'outcast' kind of template to the setup of their background, I'm not exactly sure if I could find particular convergences of design. Of course, I don't exactly have them all in front of me to cross reference

EDIT: Yeah, I've never done a paladin. It just feels somewhat unappealing to me. In particular because of the restrictions it has.

Artie blinked as the group was plunged in darkness. The emotional side of him thought this was getting freaky. On the other hand, the logical side of him took the emotional side of him, and punched it in the face to establish superiority. Now was not the time for emotional theatrics. If there was ever a time for emotional theatrics, it'd be at a time after anything else mattered. Which was never.

"Mission objective: reach Section 168." Artie said aloud, as though there wasn't even anything wrong or changed, "Current objective: restore light/power for wayfinding."

"Blowz: With me on the current path. Help direct the others. Rest: split up, each take a different junction. Cover ground. Locate target sector or sabotage or generator switch. Report back immediately if anything is found. Travel until dead end or 60 paces. Whichever comes first. Then try different junction."

"Clear?" Artie asked, looking around at the dim silhouettes around him, before suddenly falling over, landing with a thud on the ground.

"I am undamaged." He muttered grumpily, leaning back against the wall as he stood back up.
