It isn't for a character, but for those games that ended up dying before they even began...
Afterlife of Ideas
Fading away into the quiet night,
It disappears from our enquiring sight.
Farewell sweet idea, a thought only told,
Only to linger in our minds for others to unfold.
Gathering in the void with other ideas unknown,
A true source for beginnings, if any of it is shown.
But they're gone now, so we can only sigh,
And remember ones we know, for something else to try.
But, since this thread is here, I'll definitely come up with epitaphs for characters that 'died' (meaning they would've otherwise lived, if the campaign lived... as of yet, I don't have any characters that actually died in a game)

It doesn't make much sense for Ocyari to recover from fainting just to fall to sleep after few words exchanged...
Or at least, that's what it seems like to me, unless someone wakes her up, and she might not be happy that she was woken up
So, I guess this is to say there won't be a post from me unless we move onto the morning, or Ocyari is woken up before then...

Subject: ... it is hardly limited to death
"You don't know, Ian? Yet you also watch those anime as well, correct?" Galen murmurs aloud, breathing a sigh.
"There are many things that can weigh on a person's soul, regardless if they are dead or alive. In many cases, the burdens merely carry over in undeath, so while their body becomes something intangible, their souls still carry burdens, but it is hardly limited to the realm of death." Galen begins, "One of the most extreme yet simple burdens, of course, is guilt. Especially the guilt of bringing about death, although it is not limited to that. Vengeance can also be another burden. If one chooses to swear vengeance, so that there is no turning back, that very choice could put them on a path that they find they did not want to take, and so they are burdened by their decision."
"It isn't always by one's decision that they become burdened, however." Galen adds bitterly, "I presume the wraith was only talking about the burdens revolving around guilt of one's actions, but there are others, ones that are put on a person just from the circumstances in which they are born. An obvious case of this would be the example of royalty. The child of the monarchs could very well not want the weight of having to carry the burden of a country, or just simply maintaining a capital."
Then there's the example of me. Galen bitterly thinks. When humans are presented with circumstances in which they have no control over, which dominate their very lives to their disliking, resentment is born. Thankfully, here, in a world where magic is real, transition will not be so difficult, will be quicker on the physical level, and, one would hope, permanent.
"Is that sufficient to answer your query?" Galen asks.

Subject: Even alone, there is strength
Sen smiles, "Well, I am here, although you can't see me."
"We're alone, so I might as well show you what I am." Sen muses.
Sen lets herself relax slightly, and her form appears, hovering in the air. Physically, she looks no taller than a human child, but her proportions are more for that of an adult. She wears a violet silken dress with an open back for an easily apparent reason. Upon her back is a set of iridescent coloured dragonfly wings. She has silver hair, and also wears a few pieces of jewellery, namely two rings, and a necklace, all exquisite pieces of art with clearly coloured and well cut, pretty gemstones. Upon her hip is a simple pouch, carried by a belt. Her violet eyes look upon the girl with a wisdom that seems beyond her apparent age.
"My name is Sen, and as you can see, I am not human, and not quite mortal either. I'm a spirit of the air, or a sylph if you prefer." Sen says, giving a slight curtsy in introduction.
Sen's eyes grow distant, "Even if alone, we all have our own strengths. I do not know much about the children of the night, but I do know that although it certainly isn't a change one would want, there will be some advantages to it."
A slight smile forms on Sen's lips. One could almost go so far as to call it 'fate's compensation' for what it has done.

Sen shakes her head. The girl seemed rash, but whether that was her way of dealing with her situation, or if that was just how she was, it is not the best view to hold. In understanding, there is little action taken, true, however action without understanding could cause more harm than good.
"What must be done, and what can be done, are two very different things. I am but one, and you are but one, and your foe has many." Sen murmurs softly, "Most of the normal humans will not help. You've already experienced this truth. They believe that interference will only lead to further their losses, and so choose ignorance, what they think is a safer path."
"The humans that will help you, are ones that will have been hurt themselves, but they will not be easy to approach. Vengeance is one thing that unites people, but it is dangerous to use as the only connection. Those who have been hurt by them, who see you as one of them, will strike you as well as your foe." Sen elaborates.
"You are young," Sen murmurs, "Even if you would have it otherwise, and your connections to the world will be few right now. What connection was strongest before, that you have? The strongest connections will remain, even after one changes, and so from them you may find allies."
"I, myself, am a wanderer; there are few people that know I exist, and fewer that I keep in touch with." Sen says quietly, her voice merely a whisper, "You are the only person I have touched in this world. What I am saying is, although I will help you, I myself do not have anyone to call for aid here."
Sen falls silent. She considers talking about how rash the girl seems, but if it is part of her personality, then no amount of talking on Sen's part would aid in learning; with the personality, one develops as one grows, through experience. You cannot tell the seed to grow into a tree, it just will, given enough time.

"Alright, can you cover me? I do far better with my bows than my scythe." Linnix calls back.
Linnix advances forward, keeping an eye on the goblins in front of her, but seeming to pay more attention to the enemy drow in the air. In her mind, this movement is to get a closer shot at the enemy drow than to deal with the goblin rabble or catch up with the others. The goblins are pawns in a much larger chess game, and one doesn't get very far by merely taking a few scales off of the snake.

She looks at the bunny lying dead upon the ground, and nods, "It looks like it is blood that you have to have in order to attain nourishment. Don't worry about what you've done; it wasn't your choice, and you still want to survive." Sen says gently, comfortingly.
"I'm sure you have many questions." Sen continues, "Ask, and if I can, I will answer."

I overdid it, but then again, the girl has a lot to comprehend, enough to overwhelm one's mind. Sen thinks softly. She carefully moves the girl's body so that it is in a comfortable position, yet also shaded by trees and foliage; if vampires were similar in this realm to the other world's she's been to, Sen knows that sunlight isn't the healthiest thing for one.
I imagine we'll have to keep moving, so we'd better be ready to go if needed. Sen bites her lip, Although I know a bit about vampires, I don't know the more practical information. Do they have to 'feed' on mortals? Hopefully not, but if that's the case, that'll be a bit of a problem. Well, I might as well gather some berries anyway.
Sen rummages around the grove, seeing if she can find any berries. However, nothing meets her well-trained eye, even as she looks through all the bushes nearby. Just then, a little pink petal flutters by. Looking up, Sen spots a young cherry tree, just coming to bear fruit. Smiling, Sen flies and gathers a handful of the unripe fruits, from different parts of the tree so it wouldn't be noticeable that she had taken some. Placing them in her belt pouch, Sen returns to the girl's still form.
Good thing I don't need to sleep; I can keep watch over you that way. Sen thinks, before flying just above the treetops, still invisible, and setting her eyes to scan the surroundings.

Linnix quickly wheels around, glancing with surprise at the Drow apparently hovering in the air. True, she had heard a few stories about the darker Drow, but travelling with Aelistae had almost wiped them from her mind. It does not seem fitting to her, and she certainly could not imagine a more seemingly polar opposite to her friend.
The one shot she had fired into the dark would have to do as a warning, and she couldn't quite tell where the sniper was anyway. Besides, there are more pressing matters at hand. Quickly slinging her bow upon her shoulder, something that probably shouldn't be done to a bow, Linnix reaches into her pack and pulls out her hand crossbow. It doesn't have the same range or strength as her bow, but it does have something she doesn't currently have for her bow. Reaching for a smaller quiver strapped to her ankle, Linnix draws out a yellow-tipped bolt, inscribed with runes. She quickly loads this bolt into the shaft of the crossbow, and takes aim at the drow; it wouldn't do to waste it on a goblin. Seeing Aelistae ahead shouting back at the other Drow in indignation, Linnix adds her own, small voice.
"I will defy you as well, one who taints the name of Drow." Linnix murmurs, and she fires the crossbow.
((Linnix will continue to fire at that Drow with those enchanted bolts, unless the goblins at hand advance further, in which case she'll switch back to her bow and fire at the goblins))

"What Maera wants with Corbenik's power, we do not know. She probably wouldn't tell us if we asked either." Gho replies.
"The Cursed Wave has manifested itself in the World before," Rei adds, "but it doesn't seem to be related to Maera. She is, as it is well known, an enigma. Who her player is, if she even has a player, the amount of knowledge she has at her disposal, and, ultimately, just what she is capable of, is all uncertain."
"The only real things we know for sure about her is that she has data akin to a player character, but it is also strangely larger than a typical field's data size, she seems to be in the World 24/7 constantly, she is based on the class 'Adept Rogue' and one of her components is Harvest Cleric, her base level is 150, she can teleport, use Data Drain, and use a special technique known as Eldest Awakening." Gho lists, "Beyond that, no one seems to know anything more, if they know up to this degree in the first place."
"But if we're right in that she is an AI, it is probable there will be things we'll find in the archives." Rei says optimistically.

Sen quietly followed as best she could, taking care to be above head-height for everyone within the inn. She looks a bit disdainfully at the man's attempt to help the girl. Well, some help is better than nothing, but books do not always lead to understanding. Sometimes they confuse, bewilder, and cause more harm than good. Sen quietly hovers above the girl, trying to consider how to help.
As the inn doors open, Sen can easily guess the intruder's intent. This is not good. No room to manoeuvre, nowhere for the girl to run... There is only one chance.
As the girl screams for help, Sen leans forward, invisible, and whispers into her ear urgently, "Please, calm down. There's no time to explain. Hold out your hand, palm towards them, and try to look as though you are concentrating. Close your eyes, just concentrate on the air in front of your palm."
Sen reaches forward with her own hand, palm just above the space in front of the girl's own. Lalou es kinar'd folin na. Sen whispers, feeling the air flow with her voice, or, more specifically, the charges within the air. With her other hand, she quickly reaches into the pouch at her belt, and pulls out a topaz stone, with the design of the cut gem responding to her touch and calling for electricity, amplifying the spell as it gathers charge. A sphere of crackling electricity gathers at Sen's palm, yet looking for all the world like it's formed in front of the girl's palm. As the gemstone disintegrates, the orb flashes brightly, before sending three immense arcs of electricity into each of the three vampires, blasting them back and hopefully out of the inn.
The drain of the spell immediately washes over Sen, and a feeling of fatigue makes itself known, but Sen brushes it aside. The danger is not over, and there is one more spell to cast.
"Calm down." Sen repeats softly, kindly, to the girl, just in case the spell startled her, "Now hold your palm so it is facing up."
Sen quickly pulls out a stone of intricately cut amber, and gently places it in the girl's hand. "Concentrate on the feeling of the stone. Do you feel how smooth it is? Concentrate on that feeling."
Yeskin voll shirka nin youlse Sen intones gently, holding her hands below the girl's to catch the amber as it falls.
To everyone else, the girl vanishes, but Sen knows where she's gone. Amber preserves things well, and now the girl is far safer than probably ever before, held in stasis within the stone. Now to get out of here. Sen thinks to herself, holding the stone gently as she flies out the blasted open doorway and into the sky. She quickly sets the weariness aside as best she can, and flies away from the town, stopping in a light forested grove just beyond its outskirts. Here she lands, a bit harder than she normally would, and making sure that she's as concealed as possible, sets the amber down, and releases the spell, with the girl appearing now, standing at the same spot as the amber.
"I got us out of the town," Sen murmurs, fatigue sounding in her voice, "But I'm afraid it might not be any easier now."
((If I went too far ahead, and something else happens first, please just PM me and I'll edit and cut out the things after the point when something happens))

Subject: Epitaph Fragment
"The original source for those names are in a poem called the Epitaph of Twilight, which is rumoured to be the foundation for the World R:1." Gho responds, "However, they are now incorporated into entities that reside within the World itself. You've seen Gorre, and the others exist here as well."
Gho nods to Rei, and Rei takes a breath and recites.
Unknown where the Cursed Wave was born,
After the stars doth cross the heavens.
The sky in the east doth darken
And air doth fill with mourning.
From the chosen land beyond the forest,
A sign of the Wave comes.
Riding the wake is Skeith,
The shadow of death,
To drown all that stands.
Mirage of Deceit, Innis,
Betrays all with the flawed image,
And did aid the Wave.
By the power of Magus,
A drop from the Wave doth reach the heavens,
And creates a new Wave.
With the Wave, Fidchell,
The power to tell the dark future,
Hope darkens, sadness and despair rules.
Gorre schemes when swallowed by the Cursed Wave.
Macha seduces with the sweet trap.
Wave reaches the pinnacle and escape none can.
Tarvos still remains with more cruelty
To punish and destroy.
After the Wave, only a dark void remains,
And from deep within the void arrives Corbenik.
Perhaps then the Wave is just a beginning as well.
"That is one of the known fragments from the Epitaph of Twilight. However, how the Phases manifest themselves in the World is slightly different, especially now, in R:3." Gho elaborates, "The Phases now can attach themselves to characters, and give those characters that come to possess them some abilities that are beyond the system. It does have its own 'price' though. The Phases aren't simply something that can upgrade the character. They are, in effect, alive, and have their own feelings, which mirror one's own in attachment. If your feelings seem to get the better of you, especially negative ones, your Phase Avatar may go berserk, which, coupled with their incredible power, could very well have consequences that shake the foundations of the World."
"In a way, because it gives you power, Phases can amplify the dark side of a person's heart. The power is only restrained by one's own will, and only to a degree. If you draw on too much of the dark side of your heart, the Phase will then take matters into its own hands, fulfilling what was at the time your heart's desire. In a battle situation, this usually means the Phase will go berserk, and will not respond to the player telling it to stop, and will only end after they have annihilated their enemy, which could easily put the other person in a coma. All the Phases do have the power of Data Drain after all; that is how Gho and I were able to use Data Drain." Rei further explains.
"As to why Maera called us by the names of the Phases," Gho concludes, "She evidently could tell which Phase we were most suited to. How she could tell, I'm not sure, but Rei and I presume that the Phases watch over a potential candidate carefully, and Maera could somehow see which ones were watching us, further indication that she is an AI. That makes sense, especially considering that you, Kiku, and Kimono all drew on the power of the Phases in the battle against Gorre. That red wand you briefly held was Skeith's own wand. The sword that plunged into the ground for a second was Tarvos's sword. The beam of energy that erupted into the ground was from Corbenik's attack."
Finished, Gho and Rei fall silent, waiting to see if any other questions arise.

Subject: Dancing in the Air, Unbeknownst to those Below
Far above the town, light footsteps twirl through the air. Why she had come here, she didn't know, but the wind directed her here, and that's all that matters. Ah, well, since she is here, she might as well look around.
Descending to just below the roof-line of the town, the invisible girl flies, searching for a market. She didn't expect to find anything of particular interest in such a small town, but the market also tends to be a source of interesting information and rumours...
Her ears twitch as a desperate voice trails faintly in the air. 'I need help Eleazor. It's join my creator or kill her. Please!' What is this? The girl quickly changes course, flying over a couple of houses to find the source.
She settles on a perch at the edge of a rooftop overlooking a street. There, below her, seems to be a person that others are careful to avoid directly, going around her and giving her a wide berth. The person she is beseeching also seems to hold a great deal of shock and fear. From this angle, the girl on the street is facing away from the sylph. That would not do. Quickly, she leaps into the air, and gently lands on the building opposite with a burst from her dragonfly wings. Once there, she perches, and examines the front of the girl below.
She has red eyes. So that's what it is. She is a vampire, but from the sounds of it, truly did not appreciate the change. Well, that is an understatement; the change had left her with something she had never wanted. Sen closes her eyes sadly. Despite her many years spent travelling, she had never come across any spell or remedy that could reverse the change caused by a vampire's bite. The girl would have to learn to adapt to it, and, perhaps, Sen would try to help her adapt. If Sen had learnt one thing about the worlds she had visited, it was that if she was allowed to interfere, the world would give her the opportunity to. So Sen simply waits, observing the situation unfold below.

Subject: Message of the Incomplete AI
"Both Rei and I are pretty sure Maera's only interest currently is Kiku. If you recall, Maera paid the most attention to her after all, and even mentioned her invitation to Kiku then." Gho Lightning thinks aloud, "Speaking of which... how long has Maera been emailing you, Kiku?"
Kiku bites her lip, "Truthfully, the very first email I ever received was from Maera, and I got it just an hour after I made this character and logged in. I couldn't make any sense of it at the time, so I just archived it, and assumed that perhaps it was just a mistaken address or something."
Rei sighs, "Well, try to dig it up if you can... it might make more sense now. Anyway, you're on pretty good terms with Sakura, right?"
Kiku nods, "Yes, we're pretty good friends."
"Then would it be alright if you asked her for the keywords to the areas that Maera personally protects?" Rei asks.
"No problem, I'll go now." Kiku says, standing and leaving the @home, "It surprises me how often she's online when I am."
Rei gives a bit of a sad smile, but it quickly fades as she turns toward Kusardo, "I don't think it would be a good idea to try to find that character, the one with the distorted name."
Gho nods, "Generally, when there's a name that is distorted on the board or in an email, there's only a couple possibilities. Players are not allowed to deliberately distort their names at character creation, as you have a limit of the number of numbers or symbols you can put in it. With that being the case, the only way a screen name can be distorted is if the character's data is corrupt, or, more likely..."
"It was from an AI that hasn't fully developed." Rei finishes, "and if that's the case, well... it'll be very difficult to try to locate them at the very least."

Subject: The Whereabouts of Truth
Kiku goes to respond, however, Rei interrupts, "I don't suppose you saw today's newspaper, did you? There's a section in there regarding a blackout that occurred in shimokitazawa mall yesterday."
"That's where I was accessing from!" Kiku blurts out.
Rei nods, and continues, "It doesn't mention Kiku by name, however, it does say that a woman in her late teens was found unconscious at a computer-cafe after the incident. The store employees are said to mention that they saw her playing 'The World', and screamed just before the blackout. At the end of the article, CC Corp, of course, states that it is merely a coincidence that the coma occurred while playing the game, and was merely due to shock from the abrupt disconnection caused by the blackout. The electricity company still hasn't determined the cause of the blackout, but Gho and I suspect it was caused by collateral damage from Maera's Data Drain."

Subject: When planning for the future, look to the past.
"You seem a bit surprised that to Kiku, your hand has texture." Rei says carefully, "Well, it would be surprising, if one didn't know the original purpose of 'The World', but that's not something that should be talked about right now. It's a different topic."
"As for mending Kiku's situation..." Gho interjects, "Well, this isn't the first time in the history of 'The World' that this has happened. Most of the known incidents occurred in R:1, or so it says in Carminia Gadelica's archives, of where the player fell into a coma while playing the game. Unfortunately, the only other case similar to Kiku's particular situation, where the player's consciousness entered the game, had entirely different circumstances, and so we can't base much on it."
"However, if we look at the coma cases as a whole, one similarity is held between all of them." Rei adds, "In each case, in order to heal the victims, something has to be done regarding the entity that put them in a coma in the first place. In other words, the only one who knows exactly how to get Kiku back to reality is Maera, the one who effectively 'locked her in' in the first place."
"Of course, I doubt she'd tell us if we merely asked her." Gho adds bitterly.
"Aww, not again!" Kiku suddenly blurts.
"Another email or shortmail?" Rei asks quickly.
"Yeah, Maera sent the same email again." Kiku nods, and then, turning towards Kusardo, adds, "She's been emailing me every hour on the hour for the past day, asking me to meet her at an area."
"We all decided it was not a good idea for Kiku to go." Gho says firmly, "But Maera's persistence is incredible... every hour on the hour... unless she's using some sort of program to spam the message for her, that suggests that she is online 24 hours a day, which is exactly what the access records show."
"In other words, there is a good possibility that Maera either is in the same situation as Kiku herself, or might not even be human." Rei adds, "Which further complicates things; if Maera is an Artificially Intelligent Player Character, as things seem to indicate, there's no telling what she is capable of."
"Either way, we don't have enough information as it is." Gho concludes, "So the next step is going to be searching the archives. Rei and I are going to do some digging tomorrow, and how did you do that?!"
Rei smiles sheepishly, "Well, looks like I win the go game."
Shaking his head, Gho sighs, "I can't believe you're still better at go than I am. Anyway, that's what we intend to do. We called you here to give you an update of how Kiku is doing; you don't have to help us. Actually, it might be better if you don't, at least initially; the archives aren't the easiest place to be."
"Oh, one more thing, both of you: I suggest avoiding Saturday. It isn't that big of a deal right now, but doubtless, she'll notice the Kiku's irregularity in the access logs and begin to wonder. Saturday is a system administrator." Rei adds, "Well, do either of you have any questions before Gho and I call it a night?"

"Warm, yet rough, kind of like my brother's after a year of metal-working classes. You should use lotion. I told my brother too, but he didn't listen..."
Kiku's eyes snap open and she smiles sheepishly, "Sorry, I forgot... I don't think there is a lotion item in 'the World', is there?"
Gho and Rei, in the meantime, seem to be whispering among themselves.
"I wish I had made a human character... having a tail is very, very awkward." Kiku suddenly says, shifting her position slightly, "I'm having difficulty getting used to it."
Rei Lightning winces, "Yeah, I can imagine. I can't really help, but I suggest just relaxing. I presume you do have a cat, so, try to consider how they hold their tails."
Kiku frowns, "But they aren't bipedal."
Rei averts her eyes, "True. I didn't consider that."
"Hopefully I'll get used to it by tomorrow..." Kiku murmurs, her ears twitching in slight annoyance.

"Argh!" Kimono suddenly growls, "Why now?" her voice can be heard as she talks to someone else at her end of the line, "Fine. Sorry guys... I've... been grounded."
Kiku gives a small chuckle, her frame shivering with a bit of restrained laughter, "Sorry," Kiku murmurs, "It just sounds a bit funny... well, to me anyway. I know it isn't, but I can't help it."
"Anyway, I'll see you all later, OK! Don't wait up for me; I don't know when I'll be back!" Kimono says quickly, before logging out, with blue rings forming about her character, before it fades to nothingness.
"That was... logging out right?" Kiku asks, slightly hesitantly.
"And you're still unable to?" Rei Lightning asks carefully.
Dully, Kiku nods, stands, and the blue rings form around her, but with the exception that after the rings fade, Kiku is still there.
"Looks like we were right..." Gho Lightning says, walking into the room from around a corner.
Both Gho and Rei then turn to Kusardo, their eyes seemingly looking past the character and viewing the soul of the player.
"You see, Kusardo, since Kiku was Data Drained, her character's data volume has increased substantially. It is now larger than even a typical field's data volume." Gho begins, "And you've probably noticed yourself, but many of Kiku's character movements and graphics are far more advanced than what CC Corp programmed into the characters."
"This, combined with the fact that she cannot log out, leads us to believe that Kiku now exists in 'The World'." Rei adds onto Gho's technical side, "That is to say, her consciousness now resides within her character."
Kiku sits down and looks away, her hands fidgeting nervously.
"Therefore, it is safe to conclude," Rei finishes, "That Kiku's body on the 'outside' is now in a coma, and that Kiku here can feel pain, and maybe even experience death."
Finished, Gho and Rei stand with their arms crossed, mirroring each other, watching Kusardo carefully for his reaction.

Subject: Grr, where's that Basic speech capability when you want it?
“Um… Kate… I wanted to say thank you. If it wasn’t for you I’m certain I’d be dead right now. I owe you a great deal and so does my kin.” She then bowed formally to the droid, and even with the bundle of ruined clothes in her arms, the ridiculous mechanic’s jump suit, not to mention the surroundings she still looked almost regal with her movements and demeanor.
In response, Kate wheels around to face Lelain. The electric arc arm is quickly set aside, and Kate's dome moves forwards and backwards, pivoting at her two 'legs'; the astromech droid's nod. Unfortunately, it would have to do, for she couldn't yet configure basic into her vocabulator. In spite of the lack of vocal speech, Kate did look proud, just in her little stance. Whoever said only medical droids could heal?
Slowly she rose again, and looked over the ship. The conversation drastically switched to something else. That was Lelain, she said thank you, she meant it and now it was time to get to the task at hand. “So how does she fare? Will we be able to depart soon?”
Yes, with the minor thermal increase to the hull that occurred during the takeoff, as well as slight collateral damage to the rear of the vessel, it will be ready to go in 15 minutes... Kate beeps in binary, while twisting her dome from side to side; the astromech droid's shake of head 'no' response. Kate did have a sense of sarcasm, it's too bad she couldn't share it though...
Kate turns toward the ship's hull, and projects a holographic, three dimensional calendar upon it, highlighting 'today' and the 'expected date of repair completion', which is in eleven days.
