Subject: Confusion spell?

And here we were trying to be friendly....

Suggestions? Anyone feel like walking close and peering upwards into the branches?

Topic: Oaks Heart
Subject: To catch a ....what?

The group pauses at the edge of the small clearing and very quickly discusses what the should do. After a couple of brief comments a plan is decided upon and put into action.

The group moves around the edges of the clearing until they have the tree surrounded. In doing so they keep two important things in mind. 1. They generally stand sideways to the tree - so that they can try and keep an eye on the woods behind them. They do not turn their back on the woods. 2. They stay out of "reach" of the branches, to the best of their ability.

Once they have been moved into position, Hammer and Anvil call the dogs to them. Assuming the dogs obey orders, they are told to sit to the side of the dwarves. (Not in their way should something occur.) Anvil calls out in common saying, "We did not mean to have our dogs frighten you. They get excited sometimes. Who are you? Come down so that we can speak."

The team is also attempting to figure out the source of the smell - and exactly what the odor might be. If Anvil gets no response the others will take their turn using the language skills each has available to them. Rat would be the second one to speak as Anvil is guessing the person/thing in the tree (No, Rat, that "thing" comment is not a statement about Halflings...) might be a halfling or something similar.

Specific other things to be noted:
1. Does it seem like there was more than one person/thing in the tree?
2. Is the movement caused by the person presumably in the tree, or is the tree moving of its own accord.
3. This is not a very friendly portion of the woods, nor I believe, a very healthy one. Is this tree healthier than the others around it? Does it not have as dismal a feel? Or is it just like all of the others in this neck of the woods?

The group is around the trees in the same order they were marching in - with Anvil at the far side of the tree. If needed, after Anvil and Rat, they will speak in the same order are they marched. Anvil still has his shield and sword out, although he is trying not to look threatening (while still keeping himself at the ready, of course.)

And now we wait to see if we get a response...

Think it might be a halfling - Rat?

Any ideas about the smell?

I'd think we might want to call back the dogs and surround the tree - than try to talk them down. Any others thoughts?

Subject: A bird in the hand...

SD - A couple of quick questions:
1. From the footprints, can we get any sort of idea of the size of our quarry? Bare feet I take it?
2. Does the spear look like it might have been thrown from the tree at the dogs? Could whoever is in the tree grab it and yank it upwards to use again?
3. Is there anythign odd looking about the tree, besides the dude hanging out in it?

To the group:
I think we want to quiet the dogs so they don't attract more attention. I also think we should try talking to this fellow - as has already been noted, nothing says he is a bad guy. I think we talk to the guy, get the dogs away and maybe grab the spear before he/she/it can get it back. What says the crowd? Also, in what langauges can the crowd speak? I'm guessin' it isn't a dwarf up the tree, although that would be fairly funny.

I probably won't be around for a few more days so if someone else wants to post the group resonse that would be great. I don't want to do it with only one or two responses to circumstances and not knowing SD's response to the questions above.

Anvil will put away his bow and carry his sword and shield - both out and ready for action.

Thanks for the info.

Well, I think that post works with what people have been saying. As always, voice opposition.

SD - I am a bit curious about the woods around us. Is there enough room to see that a bow seems useful? How far can I see? As the best fighter in the group I am hesitant to get caught with just a bow in my hands, but if visability allows I want it. Jsut diggin' for info.

Also, did the dogs head towards or away from the "evil looking woods?" Wasn't that more on one side of the road than the other?

Subject: And the cahse is on...

As the dogs bounded off into the woods, Anvil stood up, bow still in hand.

He saw rat watching the woods and was pleased to see the team at work so quickly. He turned to the leader of the wagons and said, "We need to follow the dogs, if you are attacked yell. Yell loudly. We will return if we can. Give us a short while to find the dogs and return. If we don't we will start our progress from here. I don't think I need to warn you to set guards. Good luck!"

Turning to the group, Anvil said - "I think we all agree we don't want to lose the dogs this quickly. Grab your stuff - and lets see what they have found. Lets go as quickly as we can. It will take them awhile to fix the axel."

The team will head off of after the dogs in double file if possible, single file otherwise. Anvil has his bow out and will head off with an arrow at the ready. (Not a silver arrow.) Anvil also suggests to the rear of the group that they keep an ear out for anything happening back at the wagons.

Considering everything we have been told, I think we must follow those dogs. It doesn't sound wise in some ways, but I'd hate to lose poor little sprinkles, and we must start somewhere.

Whose dumb idea was it to get dogs anyway?

Ok, it seems we are ready to start. Khalessin is ready to go. I don't remember if we had a marching order. Khalessin is happy to go up front. Whatever. If someone wants to post a general - we head off post, I'm on board with it. Just assume Khalessin heads to his horse, mounts and is ready to ride.

Ok, I'll try this again...

Everything gets distributed as suggested in the discussion forum.

Bolts - Hammer
Arrows - 2 each for Anvil and ... the elf that can use them, I forget which one.
Daggers to Rat, Trillian and T'Sall.

Dogs - Anvil can take charge of Sprinkles
Hammet to take charge of Muffin. (I thought he might be the second most likely to be in combat, being able to wear armor and such. This is open for debate, but it seemed ok on the other forum.)

I think that covers everything.

And they're off!

Well, I thought I posted on the other thread a couple days ago in response to all of this, but I guess not. It really all is the stuff listed above - plus Anvil will be riding in the front wagon with his bow out and an arrow (non-silver) at the ready.

I will try to post again.

Subject: And the march begins...

Ok, it looks like you guys have managed to get things sorted out. I will quickly post on the other forum - but this is what I think will go. Please note that I will probably not see a computer until Tuesday (maybe) so feel free to change this - it is based off of previous posts here and on the other thread.

Marching order seems set and posted

Arrows - Anvil has a short bow. So does one of the elves. Split the arrows?
Bolts - Hammer has the crossbow
Daggers - thief and two elves. I don't think Anvil is even proficient with a dagger so he'd be a waste.

I believe that leaves each of us with at least one silver weapon.

Love the Rat's idea about Holy Water.

Dogs - I think the Rat is right - lets assign each toa person. As a fighter up front Anvil is a logical choice - he'll take Sprinkles. Hammer is the next most likely to be close to combat - so he can get Muffin. The one possible consideration here is that Rat might not want to be right in the fight - nor would he have spells to cast, so he might be well suited to a dog - then again wolfhounds don't help one sneak around. Anyway, my post will say Hammer, but whatever.

And we are off...

"Guard dogs? Well, beggars can't be choosers. We would be happy to add their muscle to our little expedition."

With that the little group accepted the Ol' Crooks offer of the dogs. (If I read that correctly, at no cost?) The rest of the day will be spent in provisioning the group, I suppose. Anvil will certainly want a months worth of food - as well as some supplies for the dogs. With that done the group will make plans to meet in the morning to head out with the loggers.

Well, the dogs aren't true war dogs, but they may help a bit. I guess we should take him up on his offer. As for wanting to get info on the critters, it doesn't seem like we will get much, although the "blood draining" is a nice touch.

Is there anything else we need before we set out?

Subject: Dead ugly brutes

After making sure that the Hell Hounds were dead, Khalessin turned to Lyra. He waited for his comrade to finish with her statement before adding his questions.

"Well, those little dogs prevented you from answering my earlier question - why the mountains? Also, these dogs seemed to know where they were going. Either they were after us, or they were simply targeting the city and we didn't get out of their way. Either way, they should not be here in the middle of town. Have such attacks happened before? What do you know about such evil beasts?"

After getting what he can from Lyra, Khalessin turned to the party's cleric and suggested that perhaps this trip should start with a healing spell or two if the cleric was willing. He saw no reason to start the trip with the party already weakened.

(This might need a quick clarification of injuries by the DM so that those with healing spells can figure out what is needed.)

Hammer -

I believe the hellhounds are dead, not your animals. Even if they were asleep, I see no reason why any of us would have killed your beasts. The hounds, on the other hand I think we have.

As for posting, I didn't realize the battle was officially over.

Subject: Preparing to scour the woods

After receiving their money from the town’s leaders, the newly gathered adventurers moved to a quiet corner of the tavern to begin making plans.
Anvil suggested that the group consider adding some muscle in the form of a few war dogs and that they attempt to find out more about what might be waiting for them out in the woods. With that in mind they called over the well named barkeep, since most of them were already familiar with him from their previous days in his tavern. He seemed likely to know where to find things in town.
Anvil put these questions to the man. As part of this he also hinted that there might be some willingness on the part of the townspeople to supply them with what they need at a “reasonable rate for the security of the town.”

Ok, I think I will post in the game thread that Anvil wants to look around and buy a dog or two. I am hoping that we might pool some of this starter money we were given – Anvil doesn’t have a whole lot to start with. Hammer is the only that has responded specifically to the dog question, so I am hesitant to spend other peoples money. Speak up quickly, or if I have already posted, feel free to post contrary statements. I’d probably buy two if we can.

Topic: Q & A Oaks Heart
Subject: Try, try again

Well, I tried to post a long note and lost it. So, the abreviated version:

There are only a few things to do before we go:

1. Marching order.

Anvil - Rat - T'Sal - Tingatuli - Trillian

Anvil & Tingatuli
Rat and T'Sal
Trillian

Single file and double file as needed. Thoughts?

2. What, if anything should we buy or request before going? Two thoughts: A.) Should we look into buying a war dog or two? They cost 20gp and would add some badly needed muscle to the group. B.) Anvil thought he might spend his evening asking around for info on the monsters of the woods, particularily the buggy ones that were mentioned. There might be info available.

Ok, I will try and post something tonight. It is a quick turnaround, but I probably won't have a computer tomorrow and I want to give SD soemthing to work with to keep things moving since I don't see a whole lot that we need to respond to in the latest posting.

And I didn't even know I was running.

Ok, I can certainly speak for the group for now. Obviously, this still means make your own posts whenever possible, I can simply put in the general group comments.

As for the first one, I think the Rat did an admirable job. (And good luck with your family issues, Consortium...) There doesn't seem to be much more to post until SD responds to our willingness to go hunting.

Assuming we will be wandering off into the woods, perhaps we can get started on a marching order right now. I am guessing we want Anvil in front, fighter and such. Hammer's cleric is probably the second toughtest fighter and might be our best rear guard. (?) That leaves the other three in the middle. Thoughts?

As a smaller group without a lot of "muscle," we may want to be sneakier than many groups, which may push the Rat into a leading role.

It is nice to see things beginning to role.

FYI - I am posting here because I only have a few minutes. I will be out of town for a few days - please just assume Khalessin will attack the hellhounds and then participate in questioning their benefactor.

As for the fight - color spray seems fairly effective. Khalessin will charge and attack the sleeping critters. If they are sleeping he should be able to closely target a strike on vitals.

FYI -

I will be away from a computer for a few days. Please assume that Anvil will greet all comers in a very friendly fashion and will be eager to join in any mission.

A quick question - I am used to thinking of dark elves as Drow, and evil. Obviously this groups dark elf is expecting some such reaction, but I am curious - do dark elves have a different role in this world at all? Drow, I believe, also traditionally liked life underground - do these elves? Just curious about what Anvil ought to know, or think he knows, about dark elves.

I posted a brief intro for Anvil on the main thread. The post could easily be modified if Anvil has already met anyone at the Bellyful. He is young and looking for a group to join. He will certainly join a group looking to solve the mystery of the dead loggers.
