Good news! I landed a six month contract job as a Warranty Engineer. It is a contract to direct hire so with luck in November I'll get hired permanently.

At least it's better than unemployment. I can get health benefits through the contract agency.

Although I had more time to write the past weeks the stress just killed my creativity.

All right "On With The Show".

The dice givith and the dice takith away. Our game is a hard knocks learning game. Clearity of posts is where we can hold the best chance of things going as we want but as in real life we never have perfect knownledge before hand. We can cover a situation exactly and then roll a 1 for critial fumble. I want my stuff to happen as I see it in my story eye but that isn't what always happens. Talking here helps us guess a bit better and coordinate better but that doesn't mean it will roll that way. I really hated it when I thought I was so clever to have Ulthok turn to Ooze to escape being eaten only to have him fried to death by a fireball because his AC was so bad as ooze. Tha choice came as where he tried to escape, had he move off in different direction he would have not been the effected area.

So now we just move forward using the information we gained.
These Bhuts can come back, so we need to be on guard.

And if they are tricky then that Black Robe got'sta be more then we are seeing.

If we ask questions the GM doesn't have tell everything only answer what was asked, so ask well.

Subject: A Little Help..............

Nestled all cozy in the still sweet smelling pie pan the little faerie dragon snored softly in a contented slumber after consuming a most excellent apple pie. The evening had been quiet and when her companion had left to replenish his supply of drink she just relaxed and enjoyed the quiet in their little room.

Ulthok had been gone a while but she had sensed him engaged in a little devilment and well she approved of such entertainment. Dozing into a deep sleep Periwinkle started dreaming of her little Halfling. As seeing through Ulthok’s eyes there he sat sharing a stout drink with a lovely lady all in armor. The two stood laughing and smashed their drinks into the fire. Behind them came crashing sound and then some odd looking creatures appear.

Peri trembled slightly in her piepan bed as the vision continued, she saw the lady fighter drawing her sword. Her dream was turning into a nightmare. The crashing and noise seemed so real. Suddenly her mind screamed “Pain” as what could have been a blinding flash ripped over her field of vision. Her friend's mind saw fire and she sensed Ulthok fighting pain.

Shaking, the tiny dragon awoke from the dream into the darkness of her room. The pain of her friend still seemed to ring in her head and cobwebs of sleep still fuzzed her thoughts.

From out in the halls came the muffled sounds of fighting.

Raising and stretching her wings Periwinkle now guess that those sounds had triggered the dream. As her thoughts reached to Ulthok she felt a second shock of pain that nearly threw her from the dresser.

“Ullllllllllthok”!!!!!!!!!!!!

Her mage was in trouble and she needed to try to help him.

In blur of gossamer wings the small dragon flew to the door. But it had been closed and latched, she felt it would take too long fly out window and find another way back in. Clamping tightly to the knob she drew her claws into the metal she pivoted her body as she pumped her wings to turn the knob.

Slowly the orb started to move. With a click the latch released and Peri pressed hard swinging the door open.

Nearly tumbling into the hall Peri flew out and instinctively knew which way would take her Ulthok. Down the hall and down the stairs she jetted. There at the bottom she saw where at least some of the sounds of fighting were coming.

The big human was hacking at ugly clewed thingies. He had hurt the two in front of him but two more were right behind. Peri had to get past them to find Ulthok. In a twinkle she vanish as she flew. Weaving gingerly past the human she speed up and over him and around the injured creature . Keeping clear of the flailing clews of the last two she blew a puff breath in face of one creature as she pasted.

“That should make it happy to die,…maybe the other will get close enough to enjoy it’s death too,” she thought as she speed on to where she sensed her companion.

After being hit a second time Ulthok had returned the favor of a lightning bolt only to see it fizzle. But the slight shimmer around the Black Mage gave Ulthok a clue as to what it may be using for protection. The spells directed at the Black Robe had been defused yet he cast from behind his protection. The Black Mage may have enclosed itself in a Globe of Invulnerability.

While still invisible Ulthok scrambled for cover and pulled up behind the heavy door leading to the main interior. Hoping to use the door as his own shield of protection the Halfling mage sighted on the Black Mage and cast “Dispel Magic” over it in intenting to lower the protection.

Topic: Trilogy War Q/A
Subject: From the Monsterous Manual

Tann,
I found the general info on Elemental in the Monsterous Manual.

Here's the general info from the Monsterous Manual:

Elementals are sentient beings that can possess bodies made of one of the four basic elements that make up the Prime Material plane -- air, earth, fire, or water. They normally reside on an elemental Inner Plane and will only be encountered on the Prime Material plane if they are summoned by magical means. (See Manual of the Planes for more information on the nature of the various elemental planes.)

Each elemental must adopt a shell in the Prime Material composed of the basic element it represents and once this shell is destroyed, the elemental will return to its native plane.

While there are many more powerful and more intelligent residents of the elemental planes, the common elemental is the easiest to contact, and therefore the most frequently summoned.

Their magical nature gives elementals great protection from attacks on the Prime Material plane. Elementals are not harmed by any nonmagical weapons or magical weapons of less than +2 bonus. Creatures with under four Hit Dice and without any magical abilities cannot harm an elemental either. (Magical abilities include such characteristics as breath weapons, poisons, paralysis, or even being immune to normal weapon attacks.) Orcs, for example, are powerless against a conjured elemental unless one happens to possess a weapon with +2 or better bonus to hit.

Though elementals do enjoy protection from many nonmagical attacks in the Prime Material plane, like all extraplanar and conjured creatures, elementals are affected by protection from evil spells. An elemental cannot strike a creature protected by this spell and must recoil from the spell's boundaries. However, the elemental can attack creatures protected by the spell as long as it doesn't touch them. For example, a fire elemental could set the ground on fire around the creature and wait for the blaze to spread.

Each of the four types of common elemental has its own particular strengths and weaknesses, attack modes and method of movement, depending on its plane of origin. These will be covered individually, by elemental type, in the next few pages. All common elementals share one major characteristic, however. They are basically stupid. This low intelligence makes it difficult for the elemental to resist a magical summons. But even the common elemental is bright enough to know it does not like being taken off of its home plane and held in the Prime Material plane.

BTW, not trying to be a rules lawyer, just trying to learn and understand how to play this encounter.

Ulthok was alarmed when his spell didn’t work as expected with the swarm forming in front of him instead of on the Black Robe across the room. The swarm should have been crawling over the Evil Mage but as it formed in front of him the elemental easily scatter the insects with a burst of wind.

As he attempted to vanish through the use of his ring he was sure that the Black Mage would be concentrating on controlling the elementals so he was caught unprepared as the Lightning Bolt slammed him into the fireplace. The blaze from the logs caught his night shirt a flame but the nimble Halfling didn’t linger among the logs. His quickly pushed off the grate and spring back into the room rolling across the floor to extinguish the fire in his clothe.

Ulthok now knew the Black Mage figured him as a spell caster and his main target. The Halfling hoped to keep the Black robe occupied to let the others deal with the creatures. Though magic to magic he felt he was probably over matched. Even through the pain Ulthok had to do what he could to give his companions a chance; maybe Sirene would sense their peril and get there before he died.

Moving away from the fire, still holding the invisibility to make him harder to target, he sprang up, reappearing as he attacked, the holes in the burned night shirt revealing the the black undergarment he now wore as if a second skin. Returning the favor he cast a lightning bolt at the Black Robe. When the bolt had left his hand he vanished again dropping to the floor and rolling away toward the doors into the manor.

Are the elementals large or normal sized?

Because the Bhuts are clawed and fanged can we figure they are not using weapons, it's biting and pinching and hitting?

Are these creature substantial enough to take physical blows? The manual says they have a "shell" of their element that needs broken to defeat them.

Next point: If fire consumes air, can these be consumed by fire? Would a Flame Blade for example cut and hurt them by consuming part of them to feed the fire of the blade?

Ulthok and Jessica pitched their mugs of glass into the fire but this playful sound was over rode by the sound of breaking wood and glass as front door and windows were smashed open. They quickly had turned to see the windows smashing in as four scaly covered creatures with wild hair and claws for hands clambered through. The creature’s mouths filled with long sharp fangs, the color of their scaly skin appearing as if that of undead. Bursting through the front door a trio of Air Elementals, behind them standing a Black Robed mage, his face scared by many healed insect bites.

The scaly creatures undead appearance had Lady Jessica quickly call upon her Goddess to turn the undead. Cor who was nearest the Black Robe wasted no time directing flame strike on the mage and that quickly followed by another from Valene. If the evil raiding party lost their leader it would be easier for the party to defend themselves.

Ulthok saw the elementals and knew the Black Robe was commanding them and that it needed to maintain its concentration least the three turn on him. Hoping Cor’s and Valene’s attacks had weaken to black Robe's defenses. So to help keep the Black Mage distracted Ulthok cast Summon Swarm on the evil intruder. Then the Halfling willed spirit into his ring and vanished as he moved to cover the advance of scaly creatures(1,2,3 & 4) toward the manor interior door and to try to flank the Black Mage.

Subject: Attack.................

Ok, so the attackes on the Black Robe are good. Breaking his concentration should cause the air elemenals to attack the Black Robe.

Two flame strikes should be distracting.

The conjured elemental must be controlled by the wizard--the spellcaster must concentrate on the elemental doing his commands--or it turns on the wizard and attacks. The elemental will not break off a combat to do so, but it will avoid creatures while seeking its conjurer. If the wizard is wounded or grappled, his concentration is broken.

Gee more custom baddies, Bhuts?

Well seeing Ulthok is the the only real spell slinger here on our side it looks like time for razzle dazzle on the Black Robe and company. Air elementals??? A little tough to slice and dice them!

If Ulthok can contain the Black Robe the rest of the party can slice and dice the Bhuts.

I've got bit of reading to do yet too on how to handle the elementals.

My first thought is to block block the Black Robe and elementals with a wall of force to hold them out of the battle for a bit. Then the rest of our sword carriers can attack the Bhuts. Jessica and Cor won't have much trouble with just a few Bhuts. Like I said need to read a bit and check my spells.

As they prepared to walked to the corner table to meet Valene, Lothor stepped forward. He could barely pull his eyes from pretty Paladin. As charmingly as he could he spoke,“Good eve Ulthok how fares you?”

"Lothor, I was just speaking of your bravery, may I introduce Lady Jessica Voltaire,.. Paladin of the Great Goddess Athena, …, Knight Defender of the Realm of Callahorn. She will be adding her sword to our meager group. I will be proud to stand behind both of your iron defences." Ulthok wasn't sure the fighter would get his joke so he just continued. "I was about to introduce her to Valene, but if you two would care to get acquainted perhaps then you would introduce her to Valene. I'll fetch myself another ale."
