I am thankful for the chance to have shared with so many of you. The fact that I'm old enough to be some your's Grandfather doesn't change the fact that you allow me to be young again.
You let me be a roudy old werebear, a randy halfling and a raunchy space cowboy.
I can be punny, funny and sunny.
And you let me play word games and make fun of you in limericks.
So from my soft leather Lazyboy chair I wish you all a wonderful coming year.

Subject: Evil To The Core?
Party had been asked not to wander alone out of gates of Craggian Core and take care even inside the walls. Ulthok knew the peace would not last, for if the King needed another special team then things would change soon enough. As the days pasted the mage took the time to study the many spells he acquired when the team shared their spell books. Peri flitted about and constantly asked questions or nuzzled his cheek as she stole another treat from his pouch. The mage had also asked Valene to join them whenever she could. She was a free spirit and didn’t seem to judge him. They enjoyed the benefits of their relationship. Some days Ulthok went shopping to replenish his spells supplies.
Then came the day the skies darkened with the smoke of a far off fire. They soon heard that a nearby city had been burned. The peace was ending.
Two days later alarm horns sounded. Following the city guards the party found themselves on the south wall looking out over the Atarinn landscape. As they watched a huge army of all manner of fell beasts advanced on the city. Legion after legion of evil creatures cover the land for as far as they could see and kept coming. Peri sat on the Halfling’s shoulder. As he felt her wings fluttering nervously he reached up placing his hand to her face he turned his head and kissed her small scaly cheek. “It’s a good thing there are two of us now or that gathering might worry me.”
Over the next days they would visit the wall to see how the throng had grown. Sometimes Valene would join them. When they would leave and make their way back to their rooms the gloom followed them. Ulthok was glad to have these two to share his time, the future may indeed be darker and dire than they have ever seen.

I figure we have been to the wall several times to see the mass arriving. I plan to write a little around that.

“My dear Ulthok, do you honestly think I would turn back and abandon you now…..I have no intention of leaving you... danger or not. …….I believe you have no authority to say what I can and cannot do. I may be your companion, but I am far from controlled by your choices. Now... that being said, What adventure are we now going on? What can I do to help? ………….Don't ever, and I do mean ever, think I am one to shy away from adventure and danger. Alright?”
Peri had soundly admonish Ulthok and then kissed him softly on the cheek to reduce the sting.
Chuckling lightly, “Yes, Dear…I hear you clearly!” The mage tilted his head to the small wonder on his shoulder.
“What have we been asked to do you ask? ……The King needs a group of the especially skilled to strike at the evil while it is still in chaos. Our mission will be spelled out when Cor reports back that we are ready. … We will know our mission in the morning. I have never heard of any magical item that might aid a Faerie Dragon, but if you know of one I’ll ask if one might be available for your use. Something for your protection would set my heart to greater ease. We can have Cor inquire for you.Let us return to the dinning room and see how the other are faring. In the morning we’ll see if we can gather a few tarts that we don’t need to make.”
Walking back through the quiet halls Ulthok hoped to find Valene and see if she might care enjoy what may be our last night in soft bed for a long time.

Ash had finished with the Lord and old browncoat Captain; he turned and the man in the white tux stepped up, "Asher is it? I am Matheson. James Matheson. Are you head of security of this vessel?"
Ash kept his hand on his sidearm as he addressed the man, “Well I sir, I protect what we got. Ain’t much need for security. “
Putting his extended hand back to side the man continued, "You need to know that you have a thief on board your ship. The young lady with the brown hair holding the silver attaché case? She stole that from the ship and it is my property."
The kid stood and listened as the man tried to drive his point. "Naturally. I can unlock that case and I doubt seriously that she can. Now how do you wish to proceed with this?"
Asher narrowed his eyebrows as he addressed the man. “ That may be as you see it sir, but for now that ain’t my concern. You’ll need to take that up with the Marshal if it’s stolen or salvaged, cuz we ain’t got no way to know. When we get you to ground you can contact the Feds and have them sort it out. I don’t want no trouble here with anyone and trying to take things into their own hands; dohn-luh-mah?…..We’re just tryin to save lives……… so I ask you to just sit tight cuz no one’s going very far.” The man didn’t seem to like that answer, but Asher didn’t flinch from the man’s stare.
Ash knew the man had his own men and this could still go badly. The Lord and Captain started to step away so Ash started his rounds to see what else may be a foot. “Rung Tse Fwo Tzoo Bao Yo Wuo Muhn; no good deed ever goes unpunished”, the kid muttered as he walked away.

Ulthok and Cor were escort by Ayroen to the home of the fortress commander, General Martin St Albans. Cor gathered the party member to deliver the news and offer of the King. The cleric had always spoke straight and he did not mince words now.
"Well lads and lasses, the ol' king asked us ta be a part of an elite strike force. Ah course we accepted on the spot and will serve as long as we draw breath, Now the rest of ya have a choice ta make and not take lightly. Any who wish to continue in service to the king are welcome to remain. Those who wish can instead ask a boon of teh king and as long as it is within reason he shall grant it. Land, titles and gold would not be too much ta ask. If ya stay i 'ave asked that we remain together and form a single strike group. T'would mean ya have to put up with this cranky old dwarf as leader a bit longer. So far we have survived despite our lack of teamwork. I dona expect that will be the case in the near future. I have asked teh king a personal boon, to equip us with whatever items in the royal vault he can spare. What if anything that may be I nae can tell ya."
Ulthok looked over at Peri as she been engrossed in fresh fruit pie from the General kitchen. He knew they needed to talk, he could not make this decision for her.
Cor continued, "I will judge none a coward if ya take the reward and go hame. Ten of us set out at the beginning of this adventure and only three made it this far. The odds are stacked agin us pretty bad. Many, if nae all of us, will not likely return from this trip and the forces of evil arrayed agin us are such as ya have never seen. There are 6-9 million assorted vile beasties headed this way who want nothing more than to destroy goodness. The trials we have faced thus far are as those tests we set out for children compared ta what lies ahead. Each of ya must make up your own mind. I donna want any rash answers so take some time ta think about it. Later tonight I will visit ya each individually and receive your answer."
The group remained silent as Cor excused himself and left the room.
Ulthok walked over to Peri, “I believe we need to talk…. Bring your pie and let us walk.”
(O.O.C. Assuming Peri flys up to Ulthok shoulder.)
Leaving the others, “Peri… we have just become friends and companions. I cannot drag you into the mission the King will assign, but I will be going with Cor. I don’t go to gain anything, but only to preserve that what now exists……. and to help perhaps the only friend I’ve ever really had. Peri, the dangers we will face are far beyond what I can feel I may survive…..I cannot hold you to our bond.”

Subject: Game On..................
From the tent emerged an impressive man in full plate armor. A smile spreading across the face of the Lord General Battlemount as he addressed Cor.
“Lord Trollhammer! My friend you live, when we received word from Queen Dalla of Callahorn that you were on your way here King Maridynn told me to get you, the Lady Althena and any surviving original members yet in service to him to his chambers within the fortress.”
The General was introduced to party and then the General ushered the three into the tent. The officers in the tent had prepared to honor the party that left so long ago and kneeled to Princess Althena, but the shock shown on their faces that they realized that beside the princess only two of the original nine returned. When the officer had risen the General addressed the three again.
“Sad that all but yourself and Lord Rydenham of those that left with you from Celebrimbor are dead, there was many a good warrior among them. But enough talk I must do as the King has ordered me and get Princess Althena, Lord Rydenham and yourself to him as fast as possible. As such my personal wizard will teleport you three to him.”
With that the General instructed his Wizard to teleport the three to the King.
They appeared in the main hall where King Maridynn awaited those he had charged with the quest of the Sword. They sat to dinner and the King request a full telling of all the events since the day group he had sent out to today when the remnant returned. So for the next two hours the three shared the pain, the adventure and the loss of friends and family. When they had finished the King sat quietly as he pondered all that had transpired.
Placing his wine glass down the King sighed, “Now I’ll tell you how things are now.” The King then spoke of the army of evil that had surged through the Kingdoms. The forces of the King stood 800,000 to a million strong, but they were outnumbered nearly ten to one. This is a force that could crush the defenders good.
As the Monarch continued he told that even with this there was still a bit of hope. The one that had been holding these evil forces together had been destroyed and now the factions were at odds as each tried to take control of this massive threat. That in this time of chaos the forces were split and therefore may be able to be stopped.
With that said, the King turned to Cor and Ulthok and said he once again would need a strike force to help take advantage of this opportunity. To strike back against the forces of evil. So said, the King offered the two a choice to go their way with King's thanks and rewards for their deeds……or stay and lead the next team? Cor’s leadership had proven steady and flexible so he was inclined to make him leader again; Ulthok had proven a gallant ally and would be a valuable aid.
The King offered the two titles, land and gold if they returned successful… and the same would be offered to those they chose to assist them.
Ulthok had flinched when the General had called him "Lord"; it wasn’t in his nature to relish title and he feared others would think differently of him. But “Ritter” really didn't sound that stuffy and even for a rogue it made him chuckle.
Raising his glass to the King Ulthok proclaimed.
”My King, there is little sense to me to return to a home that may soon be destroyed. I didn’t leave to serve you the first time for the gold or the glory…you know I could steal..er… find all the gold I would need…. and glory brings too much attention to a thief..ah… a procurer. ..But it just seemed the right thing at the time. So now if my old friend would wish to keep my company, I would again travel with this cranky cleric. Besides, if we survive to return, Ritter Ulthok von Rydenham has a rather nice ring to it.”
Downing his wine, the Halfling broke into uproarious laughter.

Tann, are you going to fill in what we find out from the folks at the Core?
It might be good to have the reports and then take another day to redo our spells. Guessing blindly has some challenges.
Haven't heard from Ginafae for a while.
The scene in the common room might be a good place to bring in Eclipse. Could set up so he's one the folks Ulthok and Val talk to or even Sirene if she's there too. He could be told he should meet up with Cor outside the Commanders tent the next day for more information.

Subject: To The Core.....................
As the evening drew on Ulthok joined the other party members around the small fire they have started for cooking. There always seemed to be a relaxing atmosphere from a campfires warm glow and crackling embers. Casual conversation was easy and soon the stories were started. Cor lead, he informed the spike studded Dwarv of the sites and dangers the party had faced. Barreel was interested in the battles and seemed to thrill at the danger and deadly odds the party had faced. He soon understood this wasn’t a treasure seeking band, but a group on a much darker and deadly quest.
Ulthok found the Dwarv to be a bit crude and he did have an air about him, but staying upwind was easy enough. Barreel soon got into the favorite game of oneupsmanship and told of some of his encounters and battles. He was clearly a force to be reckoned with when driven to fight. But then all Dwarves loved to tell of how great they are. The Halfling had been around Dwarves long enough to sort most fact from brag and he was impressed by the fighter.
As the time got later Ulthok in turn had introduced himself and his new companion Peri. He kept most of his talents to himself and let on more of his “procurement” abilities than his magic. You never give away all to a stranger. But if the Dwarv had the insight, he would know that having a “Familiar” wasn’t something a thief might just procure.
Excusing himself Ulthok took his leave and prepared to sleep. Peri fluttered off into the dark. The mage knew the small dragon could more than take care of herself so he made a simple nest for her use if she returned to sleep. Ulthok was still getting used to her ways and wasn’t sure how much rest she required. If searching the night was her way and sleeping on his shoulder during the day was their routine then so be it.
As day light was breaking Ulthok sensed a presence and soon felt a gentle nuzzle against his cheek. The cool touch of scales let him know it was Peri and not Val. The small creature lingered and as the saying goes, “It takes a thief to know a thief” and the Halfling could tell his new friend was up to something. Trust was building between them and the mage allowed the small creature to search his pouch, for now he knew of only two items she may desire from there. Peri’s failure giggle gave her away as she kissed his cheek and hurried off with her treasure. Although delighted that the Fairy Dragon only took an apple tart, he was concerned as to how long those would last. Food would be harder to find as they trekked deeper into the battle lands and fruit for pie or tart may be next to impossible.
The party traveled on toward CRAGGIAN CORE. The daily rides brought Ulthok and Peri closer, the trust was building. The nightly campfire brought the party closer. Cor’s sense of nature proved true again. Barreel was soon accepted into the group.
Six days into the ride they approached the Mountains of Might and as far as they could see were the remains of legions of refugees from all the races, but mostly humans. If they had been organized it might have been a formidable army, as it was they were just dangerous. They party stayed close together being sure their weapons were either in hand or in view. Peri stayed close on Ulthok shoulder, even she knew this wasn’t a place for pranks, but the well placed spell would turn away the foolhardy that thought to challenge them.
Passing through they continued on to place enough distance between them and the throng to risk bedding down another night. The group kept close guard now; roving bands would not be uncommon.
Rested as well as could be had the group again trekked on. By the afternoon they reached another tent city, this one outside the walls of CRAGGIAN CORE. These tents were in ordered rows and the many banners flapping in the breeze spoke of the remains of many noble fighting units. Had these been the whole of the original armies they would stretched far beyond sight, but they were just the remnant of dark battles, clustered now to regroup.
Cor lead his herd of cats through the encampment to the south gate of the city; drawing up to the tent with the largest flag. When Lothor asked his leave to explore the camp Cor addressed the group.
"We will spend a day here and see what information we can gather. Do as you will and we will meet here again tomorrow at noon." Cor moved towards the tent and addressed the guards. "Well now lads, would ye be so kind as to let whoever is in charge that Cor Trollhammer, Knight-Cleric of Odin requests an audience?"
Gesturing to Val; “Let’s see if we might find an Inn, this may well be our last night indoor for a goodly while. Maybe they’ll even let us bring our pets.” Ulthok waited for the thrumming he’d get for Peri.
“Of course I mean the Tygr and that cat,” he chuckled.
They turned their mounts and entered the south gate. With the numbers of refugees and the troops now stationed outside and inside the walls the mage was not sure they would find enough rooms. Well Peri and Val seemed to get along and the beast Val rode now obeyed well enough, so perhaps they’d just have to share a room.
“Peri, if you wish to explore be careful not to cause too much mischief. I’ll see if I can find a store of dried fruit to pack for our journey. Your tarts are already running low and such morsels will be much harder to find now. …… Val, your ride may disturb the horses in the streets so we will need to move with caution. The sooner it is off the streets the better. Too bad your hat would not make it look like a pony.”
Before long they found an Inn where the Innkeeper thought the Tygr and Dragon might do him well attracting the curious to his common room. Before long they worked a deal and both the Halfings had rooms. As arranged Ulthok and Val met for dinner in the common room, the Tygr under the table and Peri…well she would do as she pleased. The dinner would have been much more sparse had they not worked the deal with Innkeeper, but as it was the meat was not a choice cut and the boiled potatoes with gravy had little seasoning. Rationing was taking its toll and even ale tasted watered.
The evening went its course and Ulthok used the time to engage the locals and curious in conversation of the going of the war. When a few became a bit too rowdy toward the Tygr Ulthok quickly distracted them with some sleight of hand tricks. Why go traipsing about in the dark camp when he could gather as much information in a nice warm common room…… with ale.

A home away from home where there is always a warm crackling fire in the fire place, a personal tankard for each on the mantle; they just seems to be there when you walk in.
Your favor drink is always ready and keg of free "Good Old Froth-n-Slosh" is always at the end of the bar. There are private rooms for planning and chatting. No matter how many are in use, there are is always another available.
