Subject: No Other Way.........

The party had sailed around the island and Peri confirmed what they had seen. Peri’s wings fluttered as she listened to Ulthok; ".....too bad that first map didn't show the tower. Well it's never easy is it? But then we've got Rangers to scout it out."
“You silly mage that will take much too long, I have already scouted the coast. I will find the tower.”
With that she was once again off.

After several hours she returned again relayed what she had found. Said that for the first hour she found nothing but then as if suddenly before her she saw what seemed to be the tip of a tower. She moved closer to investigate; she could see that she had been correct as the rest of the upper parts of the tower came into view.

She told of deciding to move closer and that she was suddenly forced to reconsider as rising from inside the towers belfry, and its sides, were numerous eagle sized black and red birds. The birds rose into the sky then turned and headed directly towards the faerie dragon. A quick look before turning away she saw these birds had long barbed beaks, and instead of two legs all had four, some even with six legs. They had claws, four per leg, that looked very sharp, very deadly and glistened as if wet.

Turning away quickly she dove towards the ground to gain speed and went invisible. But still for a time the birds followed her then slowly each turned back towards the tower giving up the chase of the little dragon. Peri however had gotten a good look at the birds and had counted at least a few hundred in and on the tower. Some clearly were younglings and Peri assumed the birds gathered around them to be female. Other than that she had never seen their type before or had a memory or a name for them.

“Interesting”..Ulthok said, These bird could follow you even as you were invisible and they gave up to return to perhaps guard the tower.” Looking around to the others, “Well we need to get there first before we worry too much of those guardians.”

“We must prepare before we go ashore again. When the daylight returns we will need to quickly make our way past the beach and hopefully those screaming creatures. We can destroy what lairs we find but I think we should not spend too much time to search them out. If we put enough distance between us and them they may search for other pry or spend time devouring their own dead. But you all think it wiser to try and remove the threat as Cor has suggested then we need to prepare for that hunt.”

Pulling his tomb of magic the mage started studying the spells he needed to replace or prepare anew.

Subject: Size Matters.........

Yes ..but is it regular eagles type bird size? A Roc is an eagle type bird but always very large. The mountain eagles of LOTR were a giant sized bred. Peri could judge size as compared to the surroundings. Also giant birds would be addressed differently than standard size birds. Regular size birds most offer attack in flocks on one subject and a giant bird can go one on one. A regular sized eagle type bird could perch on a man's arm, a giant bird can carry him off.

These may or may not be evil, they may be neutral. The tower may be magic, but it might not be evil magic. The birds may be the protection from evil and therefor possible allies. If they are large enough to carry us AND could be allies they could fly us to the tower.....just saying.....we don't have to be lunch.

So are these normal sized Eagle with extra legs or giant Eagles with extra legs.

These are not standard to the 2.0 Monstrous Manual.

Peri pointed to the northern coast and a bit around the island. They sailed further than Ulthok had suspected. "You are sure then.. this puts us closer to our goal. We will have to go back to the beach and push through that horde. The tower will be in the jungle somewhere.....too bad that first map didn't show the tower. Well it's never easy is it? But then we've got Rangers to scout it out." Looking up he saw Cor listening. Now they just needed a plan.

Wow..I was thinking we were on the east coast and had to trek across the whole island. So we sailed north and are on the north corner. Not as far from the blue dot.

The party made a retreat back off the beach and into the boat. They floated just off the coast enough to breath the fresher sea air and still keep the shore in sight. Pulling his rough map out Ulthok wondered just where their sailing might have landed them. When the dawn had come and the beasts on shore had stopped their whailing he turned to his companion, "Peri...if you would, would you fly up high and see if there is another beach we might use. If you can also tell see if you can guess where we are along the shore of this map" Peri gazed at the parchment and nodded. Then with a flutter she rose high into the sky above the boat.

A short time later she floated down to land on Ulthok's shoulder, "From what I could see there are no other safe places to land, the coast is all rocks and cliffs. I would guess that we are most likely around here." She pointed to a section of the coast on the map.

A shout of, “Awake we are under attack!” Brought the small mage out of restful sleep. The years of adventuring had trained him to go from sound asleep to wide awake in a split second. He could hear the charge of many creatures rushing from the forest onto the beach. In the dark the forms were discernible but they needed to see more if they were to target this howling horde. Reaching inside his cloak he pulled his Wand of Illumination. “You can't fight what you can’t see.” With that the mage raised the wand to the sky over the party and used two charges to cast “Continual Light” in air above and between the charging menace and the party. Then in moment of self preservation Ulthok willed a bit of spirit into his ring and disappeared. Looking up at the now hovering Peri he said, “Well?” and she too disappeared as she rose above the reach of the swords.

The DM is right, we are just reacting and over thinking.

I just realized no one search the room for hidden doors, controls or switches that might opened a passage or even created the stair to the door.

Got to get our GAME thinking going.

Subject: No Wall of Force..........

The wall of force might slow them but I just read that it will likely block our spells too.

This horde won't be scared off by fire balls and such. They will keep coming to the last. So if no one has an idea on how to escape we have a massive battle at hand. We have to fight until we wipe them out or the sun rises. Even with the continual light there may be those that push through. So if Cor casts the light then Roan could cast if it start to fade. Unless you think we need two spells to increase the size of lit area.

Ulthok can slow the front with burning hands and the other mages can start laying fire ball through the horde. Lothor will do his hack-n-slash and Rayne and Roan can back him up.

The gargoyles had fled and the party needed to move on before something else tried to corner them in this room. The door out was about twenty feet up the wall and there nothing in the room to help them reach it. Walking to the stone wall the Cleric recalled a spell of change that aid their escape. Placing his hand on the stone Ody prayed to Mother Earth to grant him the spell of Shape Stone. Drawing the stone from the wall he formed series of blocks rising from the floor to the jam of the door creating a stair. Now Max could reach the door to check it for traps, neutralize it and then open a way out.

As I see it, if Max stood on Ody's shoulders he'd still be about 7 foot short of the door. Ody is 6'9' in this form and Max is 7' tall. A Stair of stone or a stone ladder would allow Max to climb to the door and check for traps and the rest of us dash up and out of the room.

Subject: Continual Light?

A couple of the Clerics have this spell and could be used maybe to turn the horde. The Fighter can hold off those that through. Also a wall of force could back them. Maybe the hemisphere of force around us and the light out front. We might be able to hold them off until dawn.

Level: 3 Sphere: Elemental (Earth) [Alteration]
Range: Touch Components: V, S, M
Duration: Permanent Casting Time: 1 rd.
Area of Effect: 9 cu. ft. + 1 cu. ft./level Saving Throw: None

This spell is similar to a light spell, except that it is as bright as full daylight and lasts until negated by magical darkness or by a dispel magic spell. Creatures with penalties in bright light suffer them in this spell's area of effect. As with the light spell, this can be cast into the air, onto an object, or at a creature. In the third case, the continual light affects the space about 1 foot behind a creature that successfully rolls its saving throw vs. spell (a failed saving throw means the continual light is centered on the creature and moves as it moves). Note that this spell also blinds a creature if it is successfully cast upon the creature's visual organs. If the spell is cast on a small object that is then placed in a light-proof covering, the spell effects are blocked until the covering is removed.

Continual light brought into an area of magical darkness (or vice versa) cancels the darkness so that the otherwise prevailing light conditions exist in the overlapping areas of effect. A direct casting of a continual light spell against a similar or weaker magical darkness cancels both.

This spell eventually consumes the material it is cast upon, but the process takes far longer than the time in a typical campaign. Extremely hard and expensive materials might last hundreds or even thousands of years.

The reverse spell, continual darkness, causes complete absence of light (pitch blackness), similar to the darkness spell but of greater duration and area.

Subject: Change the Wall?

Another option:
Ody has the priest spell of Shape Stone. He could transform the stone wall into stairs or create a stone ladder out of the wall. this could be an easy way out.

Level: 3 Sphere: Elemental (Earth) [Alteration]
Range: Touch Components: V, S, M
Duration: Permanent Casting Time: 1 rd.
Area of Effect: 9 cu. ft. + 1 cu. ft./level Saving Throw: None

By means of this spell, the caster can form an existing piece of stone into any shape that suits his purposes. For example, he can make a stone weapon, a special trapdoor, or a crude idol. By the same token, it enables the spellcaster to shape a stone door, perhaps so as to escape imprisonment, providing the volume of stone involved is within the limits of the area of effect. While stone coffers can be thus formed, stone doors made, etc., the fineness of detail is not great.

Being that we have sort slowed a lot in this game I have forgotten just what Ody has and can do. Got to get back on my toes here.

Another thought. How about a Wall of Force to stop them and then Fire Ball them. There are a lot and it will take a bit.

Also I was wondering if an invisibility spell on us would make them go look for something else to eat.

Like Wall of Force to stop them and then go invisible until dawn.

Subject: Tann's Plan

the one door out is 20 feet up the south wall, in the middle.

So that would be a long reach down to pull up the wiz. Got to think about this. Would it seem to work better to lift the wiz and Ody go last. His reach is about to 10 foot over his head.

I think I need to have Ody toss his gear up, so when he changes back he has his other weapons and stuff. I have got to keep track of my stuff.

Got to check spells to see there something to there.

OR.....
The Wiz could cast enlarge on Ody, he could lift Max to check the door and open it. Then Ody lifts the other up to the door and then pulls himself in.

Thoughts???????????
