Subject: Westward Ho........

The party had had viewed the city and now chose to see if the risk of the castle might be less. But when they approached bridge needed to cross to reach the castle it was guarded by armored and well armed giants and golems. Ulthok read into this that who ever lived in the castle did not trust those that lived in the city so having a group of strangers show up would not go well.

Knowing they must avoid a conflict with these creatures they quickly once again concealed themselves. Their options just became even more limited. So pulling a pen and parchment the mage duplicated what he could remember from the map they had seen. Having now seen the size of the city and a bit of landscape they might be able judge better the challenge of distance they faced to get to the Cyclops island. They may have to consider a more direct path that didn’t include sailing…perhaps flying?

Finishing his map he consulted to the others. “We should head west to the coast and there plan a way to cross the water by means other than sailing.”

These monsters are ferocious predators of a magical nature, typically found amid ruins or dwelling in underground caverns. They have their own guttural language.
Combat: Gargoyles attack anything they detect, regardless of whether it is good or evil, 90% of the time. They love best to torture prey to death when it is helpless.
These winged creatures are excellent fighters with four attacks per round. Their claw/claw/bite/horn combination can inflict up to 16 points of damage, while their naturally tough hide protects them from victim's attacks.
Gargoyles favor two types of attack: surprise and swooping. Counting on their appearance as sculptures of some sort, gargoyles sit motionless around the rooftop of a building, waiting for prey to approach. Alternatively, a gargoyle may pose in a fountain, or a pair of the horrid beasts sit on either side of a doorway. When the victim is close enough, the gargoyles suddenly strike out, attempting only to injure the victim rather than to kill it all at once. (To a gargoyle, inflicting a slow, painful death is best.)
When on the move, gargoyles sometimes use a ``swoop'' attack, dropping down suddenly from the sky to make their attacks in an aerial ambush. In this case, they can make either two claw attacks or one horn attack. To make all four of their attacks, they must land.

Habitat/Society: Gargoyles live in small groups with others of their kind, interested in little more than finding other creatures to hurt. Smaller animals are scarcely worth the trouble to these hideous monsters, who prefer to attack humans or other intelligent creatures.

Gargoyles often collect treasure from human victims. Individuals usually have a handful of gold pieces among them, with the bulk of their treasure hidden carefully at their lair, usually buried or under a large stone.

Ecology: Originally, gargoyles were carved roof spouts, representing grotesque human and animal figures. They were designed in such a way that water flowing down gutters would be thrown away from the wall, so as to prevent stains and erosion. Later, some unknown mage used a powerful enchantment to bring these horrid sculptures to life. The race of gargoyles has flourished, spreading throughout the world.

Gargoyles do not need to eat or drink, so they can stand motionless for as long as they wish almost anywhere. The damage they do to other creatures is not for sustenance, but only for their distorted sense of pleasure.
Because they are fairly intelligent and evil, they will sometimes serve an evil master of some sort. In this case, the gargoyles usually act as guards or messengers; besides some gold or a few gems, their unsavory payment is the enjoyment they get from attacking unwanted visitors.
The horn of the gargoyle is the more common active ingredient for a potion of invulnerability and can also be used in a potion of flying.

This creature is a marine variety of gargoyle that uses its wings to swim as fast as the land-dwelling gargoyle flies. Kapoacinth conform in all respects to a normal gargoyle. They dwell in relatively shallow waters, lairing in undersea caves.

Like gargoyles, kapoacinth are eager to cause pain to others, and mermen, sea elves, and human visitors are all equally qualified candidates for this.

Margoyles are a more horrid form of gargoyle. They are found mainly in caves and caverns. Their skin is so like stone that they are only 20% likely to be seen when against
it. They attack with two claws, a pair of horns, and a bite. They speak their own language and that of gargoyles. They are 20% likely to be found with the latter, either as leaders or masters.

Subject: No Rush Needed.........

We need to review options here. But some really good ideas.

If we need to work on new spells to make something work we can do like we did in Drow Mountain and have the cleric cast Nap on the mages to allow them to memorize the needed spell.

We may need more Teleport or Fly spells. We could even have someone morph to a large bird or dragon and all climb on to fly to cyclops island.

Oh my... ideas are starting to flow!!!!!

But we should check out the castle and its surroundings. There could stuff of interest.

Tome of Magic (AD&D 2nd Edition):

Priest (2nd lv)

Nap (Alteration)
Sphere: Time
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: One creature/level
Saving Throw: None

Creatures affected by this spell are put to sleep for one hour. Upon awakening, the creature is as refreshed as if he had slept for eight hours. The affected person recovers lost hit points as if he rested for a full night. Wizards can memorize spells as if real time had passed.

Because the rest is so complete and rejuvenating, a character does not feel fatigued after waking. Attempts to use nap more than once in an 18-hour period are ineffective (the character simply is not sleepy). Only willing subjects can be affected by nap.

The material components are a scrap of pillow ticking, a feather, and a pebble that the caster has kept in his pocket for seven nights.

Subject: Speaking Of Options...........

Nomad asked earier but didn't get an answer so I guess I took it that the the boat is our only intended option.

Did we have any extra potions of flying from our flight to the mountain? If so, how many might it take to reach the other island? Is that a possibility? Or must it be a boat?

Posted on 2015-10-30 at 18:54:37.

Prior to using the dragons we had had enough potions to make the whole trip to Drow Mountain. Maybe there is another option.

The rangers had done a fine job in find the party a good observations spot to gain some information on the city. The population was much more diverse than they would have expected. Having seen Dwarvs and Giants together with wagons it wasn’t surprising to see more in the city. This pairing of Giant and Dwarv appears to be the main security of this island, but these in the city also had a guard dog. The animal appeared to be a construct, part animal part golem. Who knows what type of enhanced senses this animal may have. The party may have great difficulty blending in and staying unnoticed. As they continued watch other odd sighting added to the mystery. Crossbreds of Half-Orc and Half-Dwarv casually walked the streets. To that they saw among the Humans were Orcs, Goblins and Kobolds. The reaction of the street people to the security patrols showed that this force must be very effective.

Of all, what wasn’t seen was quite curious, no Elves or Half-Elves. Sirene and Alyia will be obvious walking the streets. There may be a reason for no Elvenkind and it may not be good for them. He party needs to consider all their option.

As if Cor had read his thoughts he heard the Dwarv say, Perhaps we should scout the castle dock before we make a final choice." It was not really a question and Cor began to walk towards the castle, hoping to find a vantage point from which to survey the land.

“My thoughts too. We need options.”

Well that is good. The guards have to be fearsome enough to quell troubles in the streets.

Astrid, ask about your book of golems. RP looking up stuff and ask Tann questions here to help you flesh out what you find.

Tann's tossed out lots of stuff and clues that we aren't questioning. Quiz him here! If something doesn't make sense to you ask about.

We need a plan, Cor is the party leader so hopefully Keeper will expand on his thoughts. We can play our characters as they would act but we all need to find out more.

One thing you didn't include was how the population of the city was acting. Did there appear to be tension between the races. Like the Orcs acting brutish to humans and such. Or did all seem to treat each as equals showing no signs of distrust?

With the evil armies pushing North they may have had no need to go South to these islands. It may have been able to keep a fragile balance.

Where as many of the Half breeds are from raped prisons and slaves perhaps here they coexist such that normal pairing may delevop.

So being able to judge how the population was acting is important.

Well don't confuse Strangers with strange creatures. The patrols and dog things know the usual suspects and smells so we could be tracked quickly. And our Elven types would be different.
