Subject: eh.. what?


As the table didn't conjure the rich buffet it did before, Gamard started looking around. The fireplace seemed also less enthusiastic about sharing its resources. It got the Khord thinking:

"Ehm, guys... can magical energy run out?"

He was no expert on the matter and hoped one of his companions could shed some light on his fears. Assuming they were using magic every time they crossed a portal, and magical power DID run out, then eventually they would get stuck in one of the rooms. That was not a pleasant thought. At all!

"Good thinking." Gamard told Dudley.
He was hungry again and needed to contemplate these maps. The troubling thing about them was the lack of an exit. He could only assume the way out of this dungeon would be hidden in one of the rooms they had not yet attended.

"It looks like there are two circular patterns in these rooms. We've been going about these here..." he pointed to the rooms they had already visited.
"We need to find out how to enter those other rooms."

He thought on that a little more and added: "We should check out the trophy room again. It's the only one with stairs. Perhaps the way to the other rooms lies there."

So:
West always leads to South in Room-Number +2, with the exception of Room 4.
North always leads West +1
East always leads to North +4
South always leads to East + 3, with the exception of Room 6.

I'm not sure yet what the exceptions mean. Any ideas? Why doesn't 6S lead to 9E or 4W to 6S?

Gamard was quite eager to finally meet a living resident of this place. When the lead turned out to be a dead end he felt not only sorry for the creature that had died in the cramped space, but also a strange sorrow. It was as if he felt the abandonment of this place. It seemed equipped for luxuriously housing a fair amount of people, but was only occupied by beings who seemed unhappy to be there. Themselves included.

Wembley voiced his questions and Gamard put in his two cents: "It seems like his master hasn't been around for a very long while. I wonder if he's even still alive."

The conversation went into a different direction and Gamard could only agree that staying with the diseased corpses was not a good idea.

"Lets pick another portal to go through. We need to find our way out."

Subject: online gaming


I think it's hard to convert such a module to online gaming. A puzzle game is better when you can actually see the maps all together and can shift them around physically and converse among players. In an online environment, that's more difficult to achieve. So far, I think you're doing a good job at getting us along, leaving clues that we can work with.

I think Gamard is as good a character as I've ever created myself, and I'll keep on playing him until this module is over. I'm still curious to find out what is going on in this dungeon.

Gamard was doing his best to make something of the information on the paper when all of a sudden a flash of light erupted in the room. Gamard instinctively closed his eyes for a moment averted his head. But when he opened his eyes again the initial brightness had gone and he could now see a lot better.

"Ooh, that's a lot better. Thanks Dudley." he said with a nod of approval. "I should've thought of that myself."

He tapped his headband, indicating the holy symbol of Solanis and gave the Cidal a little wink. Then he turned his attention to the papers once more.

The boobytrapped room appeared to have been abandoned a long time ago. But it was the first private room they had encountered so far, and therefore the most likely place to find any information concerning their whereabouts. So far Gamard felt like he had been wandering an underground castle. The lack of windows reminded him of home. Considering that thought some more, he made a mental note to look for air shafts or other means of ventilation. If they were indeed underground, there should be some way to keep oxygen levels high enough to keep people from passing out. It was one of the things a Khord knew from living in the earth's crust.

For now, however, he was more interested in the paper on the ground and started rummaging through the sheets, looking for any clue that would give them more clarity.

Going through the portal Gamard gripped his weapon and was ready for anything. Any wild beast that would be waiting on the other side would receive a steady blow to the brain. Any undead creature crawling his way would receive the wrath of Solanis.

But, as always when you're ready for anything, nothing happened. They arrived in a room best described as a corridor, with only two doors as interesting features.
Gamard took his hand from the holy symbol on his headband and lowered his weapon. Then he looked at the others and shrugged.

"Anybody with a good eye for traps eager to open the doors?"

He had the feeling that they were creeping around in somebody's home without permission. That somebody would probably have left some precautions, though so far they hadn't encountered a lot of them. Thinking about it some more, it felt as if the somebody who owned this place hadn't been around for a very long time. But traps could still be active and it's better to be safe than sorry.

(OOC. I say we open the doors to see what's behind them. I'd prefer if somebody opened them who is a bit better at noticing traps and such, but if nobody dares, Gamard will go and do it himself.)

So, I don't know if anybody already noted this, but it seems we now know something about how these portals work:

Taking North always leads to a West portal
Taking East always leads to a North portal

I think it's also safe to assume that:
Taking South always leads to East
Taking West always leads to South

So, basically, that's one step counterclockwise on the compass.

Once they finished tying up the creatures it became rapidly clear that there was no way of communicating with them. Not only did this mean that they couldn't get any information out of these lizardmen, it meant they had no way of securing any form of truce or understanding. Gamard had no desire to harm these beings. For all he knew they were as trapped in this place as himself and his companions.

As the others began planning their next move, the Khordaldrum cleric grabbed one of the Slaa'kar's crude weapons, one with a sharp edge on it. He then squatted near one of the smaller scaly humanoids and looked him directly in the eye. He pointed to himself and the group, and then motioned for the East portal. He then pointed at the Slaa'kar in front of him and held up the knife (assuming it is a knife-like weapon), pointing it West. Gamard then walked over to the West portal and put the weapon down in front of it. He hoped his message was clear. Though he had no idea what these creatures were up to, he would not let them sit here to die of hunger and thirst. Those were not the teachings of his God. Besides, showing some goodwill might be beneficial in the future.

After putting down the weapon he walked into the East portal, saying: "Let's go."

(OOC: I took the liberty of assuming there was at least one weapon with a sharp enough edge or point. Hope that's ok.)

The text was: among the ruins of the booze and racks was the broken and beaten body of the man in black who had jumped you before but saved then bottle.

I took it that he was dead, and even if he is not I'm quite sure it's not that big of a deal that Gamard is taking some cloth from his shirt. Is it nice? Not really. But it's not as bad as you make it sound. Sometimes you need to do things in order to survive. What makes a difference is the attitude you have while doing it. I wrote that Gamard resents stripping the cloth, but that he sees no other option.

Also, don't forget time is of the essence, since a sleep spell doesn't last forever. Besides, taking something from the lizardmen will most likely result in Al rolling us another save.

Edit: Wrote this while Al posted his reply. Still keeping it up to show my reasoning.

Gamard bit his lower lip in frustration when they realized none of them had any rope. As they started looking for other ways out of this predicament, the Khord eyed his surroundings. There, on the floor, lay the body of the protector of these alcoholic cellars.

With a quick prayer to Solanis he knelt next to the body and grabbed the man's black shirt. With a firm pull that contrasted the respect he wanted to show the loyal servant, he tore a strip of cloth loose and held it up for anyone to use it for binding purposes.

He wasn't proud of robbing a dead man of his dignity, but survival was what counted. He wouldn't want to leave this room and have the lizardmen spring on them somewhere in the future.

Tying these creatures up was a good idea and Gamard quickly aided in the binding. He didn’t know how long Wembley’s sleeping spell was going to last. These scaly things could wake up any moment and he wanted to make certain nobody sprang on anybody unexpected. For all they knew these creatures were just as lost as they were and, in a way, as the bugbears had been. There was probably something to learn from these beings, if only a better understanding of what this lair had in store for them.

After securing the knots and being quite certain that they would not easily be broken Gamard took a step backwards and waited for the lizardmen to wake up.

Gamard had been silent for a while. Retracing their steps was a very good idea, and he felt quite some relief as they stepped into the cellar again. Apparently there was indeed some kind of logic in the functioning of the portals.

His relief was of very short life, when the party noted the broken bottles and the ruckus upstairs. As Crow laid out his defensive plan and Wembley went scouting, Gamard took a moment to thank his God for this new piece of insight. New Light had been shed on the situation. Hopefully with a little pondering, they would be able to determine which way to go without ini-mini-miny-moe.

He too lifted his thumb in a supportive gesture to the idea of using a sleeping spell. He clenched the hold on his weapon a little tighter as Wembley prepared his magic. If it didn’t do anything and no snoring commenced they would have a lot more trouble with these beasts. If it did help though, he was ready to tie up the lizards for later questioning. Insight was what won wars, not brutal strength alone.
