Topic: Audalis: afterlife
Subject: and what about

Reincarnation? Once you're dead, do you stay dead? Or is your spirit eventually drawn back into the world of the living?

What about this: The afterlife is a realm of living on its own, where each god has its own realm (island f.i.). If a spirit wants to contact another in another god's divine realm he can travel to that realm, but at some cost.
Another part of this idea would be that if (in a strange case) a group of adventurers wants to travel into the realms of the dead to retrieve a lost companion, there is actually a specific place to go to.
There could also be something like divine warfare in 'the heavens'. And if die while serving your god in such a war (or in any other way) you get to be reincarnated.
Bleh, I'm just brainstorming. I don't know if I even like the specific realms idea myself, haha.

I expected more updates already. I hope you can all make the Saturday Deadline.

Dragon Mistress: I just need a short post or PM on what you're doing with the third rope. I was going to update for you now, but I haven't got any information to work on.

Finally, a job presented itself that actually called for Elandor's hands. Collecting the shield had definately not been his kind of thing, though the encounter had ended without too much harm.
The trick with the reflection had been done almost without Elandor's help, aside from his invigorating trip to the roof of the chamber.

But now came a job that required the kender's expertise. Opening a chest, IF it was locked.
Oh, Elandor certainly hoped so! As soon as the torchlight reached the wooden container, the little thief shot forward and observed every little detail he could find. Then, without asking for permission, since last time THAT didn't really bring him anything, he touched the lid and tried if the chest was locked.

(OOC: If it's locked, he will do whatever is in his skills to open it. If it's not, then he'll have the most fun checking its contents.)

Ok people, our first fight of the adventure. You've had your chance to solve this without problems (which would've given you extra XP by the way).
Loda is hurt badly and I expect roleplaying accordingly
I want everybody's actions for 1 round of combat. After that I will update. The sooner everybody is in, the sooner my update will be there. In any case will I update next saturday, and if you haven't posted by then, your turn is lost, unless you PM me.
I appologize for being so strickt, but I've seen many games die down because of slow combat scenes. Good luck!

Kharolis Mountains
Troshba’s Grounds

Of course it was the story of their lives together. Some in the group were always ready to fight, opposed by those who desired more peaceful ways of ending a conflict. If a conflict was really what was going on here. Then there were those who didn’t care either way and went with what the group decided.
This time it seemed like Alyssia was on her own, though. The others did not care to listen to this monster’s wishes. Their unwillingness to trust the creature’s word was perhaps more a reflection of their own reliability or view on appearances, rather than laziness.

Troshba had regarded the group with patience beyond any monster’s capabilities. She had understood most of what had been said, or at least realized what was going on. She had never experienced anything like this, though she had let many groups pass and reside in the safety of her protection. She had also fought other monsters and lost many battles. Her scars proved it. But now she had the point of an arrow sticking towards her face, and she was not going to tolerate this lack of respect any longer.

As soon as the arrow came up, Troshba gave a fierce flick with her spiked tail. Instantly 6 of the large spikes that grew from it sprang forward and shot at Loda. Two of them pierced the druid’s arms, one penetrated her shoulder, and one struck like a needle through the druid’s tough armor and sank deep in her chest. The remaining two spikes bounced harmlessly upon the rocks. The spikes stuck from Loda’s flesh like sickly twisted appendages. The pain they caused made her drop to one knee.
Troshba gave a roar and with a few flaps from her massive wings she was high in the air.

“Troshba warned you! Now feel Troshba’s claw and spike!”

(OOC: Don’t tell me you didn’t see this coming. Loda is bleeding severely. She’s lost about two third of her hit points already (yes, there was one critical hit). You can all describe what you’re going to do, but don’t write whether you strike or not. As the DM I roll the dice and initiative.)

The merchant laughed at his friend’s reaction. It was exactly what he had been hoping for. He grinned, but shook his head at the same time.

“I’m sorry Geim. We don’t have time to discuss this over a nice pint of SphinxBreath. First of all, I have to tell you that this discovery of mine is highly secret. I don’t want to go out and discuss things like this in public. Imagine all the Khords that would be interested in overhearing us.”
He cocked an eyebrow and leaned a bit closer.
“I have a group coming in this afternoon, if all goes well. I need you to be there too, and ready to leave Khordal by tomorrow. I want you to go with them in my stead. I have to stay here to run my business. But I advise you to revive your knowledge about the Chakrandrum and their marvelous city. If you have the time, run by the library and dig up some old books. I know you’re going to need them.”

The ropes tightened around Elessarae’s body. Cut off from air she started to see black clouds in front of her eyes. More out of practice then good aim came a cut with her sword that carved deep into the rope that snaked around her shoulder and neck. A second slash severed the thing, and now she dangled upside down from the ceiling. After a huge heave for air she calmed herself and started to sing.

A third rope came down, its end hovering in front of the bladesinger’s face. Slowly it curved, as if moving on the song. Like a killer vine it touched her shoulder and started to curl itself around her chest and torso. This time it did not press down but simply wound around her.

(OOC: This third rope does not harm you, yet. I need to know what your reaction is to it, before I can continue.)

Loda’s monologue against the monster and her steps forward made Troshba drop her relaxed posture. She growled deeply and opened her maw to reply, but Alyssia was faster. The sorceress’ words made the Khordaldrum druid stop in her tracks. The discussion confused the monster. She was not used to people disobeying. Confusion mostly lead to frustration, ending in aggression. She listened carefully, but had trouble following what was going on. She let the words flow and focused on tone and position instead.

Overall the group didn’t look scared. More ready to fight. Well, so was she.

“Better listen to good words, female. Troshba offers free pass, without other claws and teeth. This is Troshba’s ground, and she keeps her promises.”

(OOC: I can’t update more than this, I need for you guys to make a decision. If you all want to fight or play safe, it’s up to you. If you can’t make an In Character decision perhaps discussion/voting in the Q/A might help.)

Guland looked at his friend the Runemaster. He smiled widely, his mind already counting the gold pieces that the future would bring him.

“I’m glad to see you are as exited as I was when I heard what the writings meant. I asked some of my merchants to find me a group of adventurers to accompany you on an expedition to the Chakran Mountains. Nobody to guard you better than people who know the ways of the road.”

Although Elessarae was extremely cautious of the door, she was still caught of guard when something happened. She was so focused on the doors opening that she did not anticipate on what was happening now.
On her way to the end of the corridor she quickly stepped past the second door on the right. Her step ended on a tile that suddenly sank down an inch. A trap was sprung and even her fast reflexes couldn’t save her from the piece of rope that wrapped around her shoulder now. It had dived down like a snake and entangled her more with every second. A second rope crawled down and caught her right ankle. Within a few breaths she was trapped as a fly in a web. She had her hands free, but the first rope was now tightening around her neck and started to choke her. She had to act fast.

As hard as Elessarae searched, there was nothing in the room. There was no hidden key, and nothing in her pouches or mind that would open the door. The hollow of the room was disturbing. When she ran out of ideas she went back to the one clue that brought her where she was now: the music. It was the only thing that clothed this room, and perhaps there was something more about it than she had guessed so far.

She took out her pan pipes and focused on the melody. Memorizing the tune she first played along with it, reaching the same notes at the same time. Although it was enjoyable it did not do anything to open the door or get her any further. Once more she listened to the flute, and then closed her eyes.
This time she played her own melody, a variation to the original that went against the music, but perfected it at the same time. It weaved its way through the room and when the future bladesinger opened her eyes she saw a second door, which had not been in the room before. She tried the handle, and it opened easily.

Beyond it lay a long corridor, stretching out before the elven woman. There were a few doors, further down the hall, but they looked closed shut in the light of the four torches that lined the left wall. The music ran freely down the hall, and seemed to originate from somewhere at the end. Taking one step into the corridor, Elessarae was bounced in completely as the door behind her flung tight, locked and then disappeared from her sight, leaving a stone wall.

Subject: the Bindings

Khordal Kingdom
Granitefingers’ Residence
23rd day of the 7th month: Pfier

Drawing closer to the book, Geimiedefher’s Runemaster senses awoke to a full. There were small hints and clues that held the nature of this book, and they revealed their secrets to the cleric’s experienced eyes.

The leather that kept the binding together was definitely humanoid. Feeling the nasty cut that ran through the book, Geimiedefher’s mind conjured the image of long and sharp tusks or nails. This was definitely not the work of a forged weapon.
Flipping the pages Geim found out soon that most of the writing was ruined. Only small phrases and paragraphs were understandable, written in twisted draconic symbols. Guland looked at him with investigating glances. He knew some of the contents, and they were horrific.

Today we marched under the whips of the Iron Fang, curse their big muscles and … - here a part of the page had faded - … would cut them up and read them their future with their own intestines if Sluf’Lobod would let me. They have their need though, as will soon be proven. We’re getting close to the main gate of Chakranna.

Another Page:
… victoriously taken. Their barricades are pathetic like their bearded little heads. They split too easily under our blades. I slipped in the bloody remains of ….
– a crack in the paper cut off the sentence, though Geim could guess the rest - … bath until my head looked like it was freshly skinned, inspired by what I saw around me.

Few pages later:
We cornered a few who resisted to much. How their axes trembled in their unworthy hands. Maggots is what they are! I can’t stand to look upon them…… fight broke out between my captain and one of the Iron Fang. We slaughtered the wretched Iron Bastard and threw his remains on the beards, who were still backing…. Great delvers? They weren’t good enough to dig their own graves. Now see them hang…..

Towards the end:
… called off the search. I intend to stay behind and find it on my own. …… Can’t be lost…. Where did they hide ….
Tuch didn’t find me. Most of the army has returned to the higher levels, but… give up. Avesaath will reward me greatly.

Despite the disturbing contents, other information about the bindings kept coming to Geimiedefher. The pages were of an old kind of papyrus that could definitely be as old as the written time that the Chakrandrum race got killed. The drying and fading of the ink seemed true. As a conclusion the Runemaster could only tell his friend that the document was real.

That's fine Val.

Note to all my players: I don't really know what you are all used to in terms of dice-rolling. I'm only in one other game (Valimar's), and I plan to use (and have been using) the system where the DM throws all the dices. So you guys don't have to worry about rolling your checks or attacks. I'll do that for you, and the outcome will sometimes be noted in stat-form, or in description text in other situations.

Troshba's patience was either short or easily thrown off balance.

"How much food do you need? How many little " Troshbas" do you have, we might not have enough even if we did give you what you desire. Maybe you can let us go past, and we can come back later with all the food you want."

The words from the female dwarf weren't received well, for while Loda spoke, Troshba flexed again and spat an angry retort.

"Manlikes should not try to fox Troshba. She needs not answer their silly questions. Bring me a breathing and beating cow. Then pass without claws and bite."

With that she pointed a paw with drawn claws upon the group, to indicate the direction to walk. The party remembered seeing some cows in the fields at the foot of the mountain, several hours back. But that would mean losing time.

Yanamari, your drawings are amazing.
I would like to encourage you though, to perhaps enhance your contrast between light and dark. In the Gnoll Seer piece, the details kinda fall away and become one big blurr of drawing. I think a bigger contrast would bring the details up better. They need to be seen!

Your maps are very neat. Would you consider redoing the map of Khordal (old Kharolis) in pencil like that? I think it would be awesome. I recently wrote a module for that part of Khordaldrum society, and would love to see an updated map.

Blamm, you are very welcome, but I already sent Jozan a PM. If he hasn't replied by Sunday evening the spot is yours. I'll message you about it then.

Greenleaf, I changed your language Undercommon for Draconnic. I don't think there is an Undercommon in Audalis, and I think Draconic would be better for this adventure. If you want another language, let me know. The book is written in Draconic though.

There's an update waiting, as promised. So get to posting again! If anybody feels the need to backpost, than that's still an option. The encounter with Troshba is still pretty much at the same place.

“What is it you wish, good Troshba?”

Taken aback by the unexpected politeness, possibly mistaken for submissive ignorance, the beast lowered its angry stance slightly. Though her guard was not lowered, Troshba seemed to relax.

“Manlikes bring Troshba bites to fill Troshba’s belly and feed her young Troshbas. You walk her rocks, then fill her needs.”

Meditating in Guland’s study proved more difficult than Geimiedefher had expected. The books and maps around him called him silently. The Runemaster felt an aura of unrest coming from the damaged book on the centered table. He managed to find his inner peace and got drawn into the flow of energy named life, creation by some, or the thoughts of Kharox by others.

He was rudely interrupted by the opening of the door. In walked his friend Guland, red beard combed and braided carefully. He was short and chubby and wore his wealth for display in rich colours and embroidering. His deep and warm voice bellowed through the room.

“Geim, my friend! Sorry to keep you waiting.” He shook the cleric’s hand and gestured towards the table.
“I’ll cut right to the chase. One of my merchants found this tome on one of his travels. Its content are shocking if authentic. That’s where I need your expertise. I need to know if this book is real, and from the time era it should be. It describes fragments of the downfall of Chakranna through the eyes of a goblin cleric.”

The window was high, perhaps too high to reach, but Elessarae was going to try anyway. She took a running start and flew straight at the wall. She had learned to ignore the reflex of shielding herself, and aimed her direction at the window post instead. Right before impact she pushed herself up with hands and feet and gripped the sill. With a sudden push she hurled herself into the opening and stared into a blank room. There was no fluteplayer, no furniture and only another door, shut tightly.

so what you're trying to say is that nobody should attack Troshba until you've done your taunt.
Please understand that you'll have to somehow let your other companions know what you're planning to do. Otherwise it's: actions according to initiative. That means that if somebody else is first and does not know about your plan then they will have to go against your plan, according to logic. Other characters don't know what you're thinking, they DO know if you talk to them (or signal or something).

I've just read the Spell point system from Unearthed Arcana. Though it allows more freedom, I also think it will cause misunderstanding. For now I would like to stick to the original slot system. I don't mind these kind of suggestions though. They are very welcome.

Next: I updated the game. If you have any questions, please post here or send a PM.
I need a walking order for the party. Otherwise, if there is a battle -I- will decide where your char is standing.

Vesper: I don't know how Draven is going to react to your questions. Though you have no ranks in sense motive I rolled a natural 20 for you, so that makes your check a result of 23. If Draven wants to hold back information then he'll have to do very good in order to deceive you. IF that's what he intends.

I would like posts to come in sooner than last time, please. Maximum time is one week. I post once everybody has posted.
