Subject: I sense a disturbance

Exhaustion… Nostalgia… Disappointment.

Why didn’t you tell me…

A sudden sense of loss…Loneliness… Despair.

“Mercury?”

The sudden and almost overwhelming surge of emotional turbulence in the Force chased the miralukan padawan from the depths of his trance-like meditations and his blind eyes shot open. Caise had entered the trance in hopes of revitalizing himself and replenishing the energies that calling consciously upon the Force so often in the past few hours had sapped from him… an attempt to disconnect himself from the physical and re-center himself in the flow of the Force. Immersing himself into the tides of that energy, though, seemed to have opened his senses all the more and the young pilot’s anguish crashed over him like an angry wave on some storm wracked beach. Mercury was suffering and the Jedi couldn’t ignore it.

Drawing in a deep breath to dispel the knot that Mercury’s anguish had twisted in his gut, Caise rose smoothly out of his meditative position, retrieved the neatly folded strip of deep, blue fabric from where he had placed it on the end of the bunk and re-secured the sash over his eyes. “I don’t know that I can do this, Master,” he breathed, knowing that Trask couldn’t hear him but hoping that he could evoke some of the elder Jedi’s wisdom, “I’m a guardian, not a consular…”

You are a Jedi, Caise, the Master’s voice answered, echoing from some time in the past, The distinction between guardian and consular is vague enough for those in the order let alone those others in the galaxy who haven’t the insight. Where do the duties of one begin and the other end? Do you know? Should they?

“No, Master,” the padawan agreed as he stepped out into the corridor and tried to sense which of the many rooms the Corellian pilot might be, “I suppose not.”

What we call despair, younglings another voice, older than Trask’s, added as Caise located Mercury’s quarters, is often only the painful eagerness of unfed hope. Feed that hope, my pupils, and the despair will certainly lessen.

The padawan answered this bit of wisdom with only the faintest of nods and, equipped with wisdom from both Trask and Vantariel, knocked softly on the door before him; “Mercury? It’s Caise… May I come in?”

((OOC: All righty, the GM allowed Caise to pick up on Merc’s flood of emotion so, of course, the padawan is acting on it – Trask would expect nothing less, after all. Someone’s knocking, Merc… should you let them in? ))

Subject: Divot screamed...

...Divot, of course, struggled madly as the Consort lifted him from the floor by a claw full of his hair. “Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow,” he complained, kicking and swinging his fist at the evil wench, “pullin’ ‘air now, is it? This ain’t no torture, ya slithering trollup, it’s blinkin’ play yard pony-shi…iAaaAAaaaaaaaaaaaiiiieeeeeeeEEEE!!!!”

The Consort’s talons flashed before him and an instant later he felt the flesh on his chest and neck part where those razor claws had passed and Divot screamed… then, as he was flung across the room, the scream became a mad laugh. “Oy,” he chortled, tears of agony streaming from his eyes as he clawed his way to his feet, “I think yer losin’ yer touch in yer ol’ age, luv! That din’t ‘urt near as much as… AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!”

Even before the Consort’s claws had closed around him again, he felt the gods-awful burning and eating away of flesh as whatever spell the slitch had cast turned his blood to acid for an agonizing moment. He was still screaming when she snatched him up and slammed him, back-first into the wall. She laughed as she drove her talons through his shoulder and pinned him to the damp stones of the wall and, in spite of himself, Divot laughed, too. That same, pain-maddened giggling that followed every wound she inflicted on him for the gods only knew how long now… every night… forever.

“Whatcha waitin’ fer, heifer,” Divot rasped as he hung suspended, impaled on her talons, “C’mon… gut me an’ burn my berries ya dirty whooOOOOOooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggghhhhhhh!!!!”

And so it went, long into the night. Divot screamed, and burned, and boiled, and bled, and laughed, and suffered. The worst of it was, no matter how much he encouraged her, she wouldn’t kill him… the pain was endless and death should have visited him more than once but the Consort always held it off… Divot screamed until he couldn’t scream anymore… He couldn’t remember when her games had ended but he did know that he’d wake up in the morning; whole again and ready for her tomorrow night.

…where’s…me blinkin’…axe?

Okay... went berserk this weekend and got 4 of the 5 characters done as far as pencils go, just have Ziv left to finish off and I'll have the whole crew sketched out. Yay for creativity spurts!

Most of you should have the "pencil whipped" version of your characters as of now... if you've got suggestions for colors or changes you'd like to see made, let me know and I'll do a little tailoring for you. Ye Olde, Ziv should be ready by tonight or tomorrow and i'll have that sketch to you the minute it's done and scanned.

“…how long have you been with the Order?” Jaal asked. The question was only the most recent in a barrage the man had fired at him since leading Caise away from the speeders to show him to a room. There had been questions about the Force, about the use of lightsabers, about training and adventures that he might have seen. Caise answered each of the questions as best he could, of course, but he was sure that some of his replies hadn’t been what Jaal had expected… perhaps a bit more blunt than the farmer had anticipated in some cases; more than a little cryptic in others.

“Master Vantariel took me to the Temple on Coruscant when I was three,” Caise answered simply, this time, “As long as I can remember…”

“And you’re what? Twenty? Twenty-three, maybe?”

“Nineteen.”

“Wow! So, sixteen years. And this is your first mission without your Master?” Jaal’s footsteps had first slowed then suddenly stopped; “Here’s your room…”

“Thank you,” Caise nodded faintly before stepping through the door into one of the house’s guest rooms, then proceeded to answer Jaal’s latest query; “In a manner of speaking, yes. I have operated independently of Master Trask on several occasions since he took me as his padawan but this is the first assignment that he has not accompanied me on. Typically, before this, he had been in, at least, the same system.”

“Wizard!” Jaal had followed him into the room and the miraluka padawan sensed that there would be yet another question coming. It wasn’t that Caise so much minded answering the man’s inquiries – so far he had asked nothing was out of his ability to answer – but there seemed to be an endless amount of them and, while grateful for the hospitality, Caise needed to tend to business. “So there’s a lot of training before you…”

“I’m sorry, Jaal,” Caise interrupted, drawing his hood back and turning to face his host, “I do not mind answering your questions but I do have some business to attend and…”

“Oh,” Jaal said, his energies flaring a bit as he realized that he may have been monopolizing the Jedi’s time a bit, “I’m sorry, Caise… I just… you know… the Jedi are…”

“No need to apologize,” the padawan said, smiling faintly as he slipped his commlink from his belt, “we can continue the conversation later – perhaps over dinner if your father doesn’t object – but right now, I need to figure out why this frequency isn’t working and contact my Master’s colleague.”

“Comm frequencies,” Jaal’s energies cooled from their embarrassed tones and Caise could hear the widening smile in his tone, “I can help with that. You’re probably hitting a jammed channel or something… there’s a lot of that going on these days.” He extended a hand; “May I?”

Jammed frequencies? the Jedi arched a brow even as he handed Jaal the commlink. Strange that the government would be regulating comm. channels on an agricultural world such as this. “I would appreciate that,” he said, watching as Jaal took the commlink and made adjustments to the device’s transmitter.

“Your father,” Caise asked as Jaal’s attentions were on the communicator, “doesn’t seem to have a high opinion of Jedi; is there a reason?”

The red-haired man shrugged and never looked up from the commlink. “I dunno,” he said, even though his aura attested otherwise, “Just had a bad experience with the Jedi once, I guess.

Here you go,” Jaal said, thrusting the commlink back at the miraluka and obviously loathe to discuss the topic of his father at any length, “that frequency should get you Dalroth, at least.”
“Thank you,” Caise nodded, accepting the commlink and making note of the modified channel. Best to leave your father to another time, as well, perhaps.

“Not a problem,” Jaal returned, backing towards the door, “I guess I’d better go see to your friends. You let me know if there’s anything else you need, okay? See you at dinner.”

Another nod from the Jedi. “I will,” he replied as Jaal stepped out into the corridor, “may the Force be with you, Jaal.”

“And with you, Caise,” …the man’s aura gleamed brilliantly for a moment… “see you at dinner.” The door closed and the Jedi was left alone in the room.

Caise stripped off his outer robe and laid it across the bed, then, being as he was alone, he also removed the scarf that usually covered his sightless eyes before activating the commlink. “Leyan Rool,” he said lifting the device closer to his lips as he strolled towards the single window in the room, “This is Caise Jhorap, do you read?”

There was a small amount of feedback at first but Master Trask’s associate responded quickly enough. “Thank the stars! It is good to hear your voice, Caise,” Rool’s voice replied, “I had heard of some difficulties regarding the TDF and an offworlder ship and feared that, somehow, you might have been involved.”

“To a certain extent, I was,” Caise chuckled, “but not to any great extent.”

“Good, good. Where are you now? Are you planetside?”

“Yes, I am at the Darand plantation,” the padawan answered, “not far from Dalroth as I understand it. I have secured transportation to the city in the morning and, if your available, we can meet and discuss…”

“Yes, yes,” Rool cut him off, “let’s not discuss that any further over the commlink, shall we? I am less than convinced that the comm. channels that haven’t been jammed by the TDF are secure…”

“Very well,” Caise acquiesced, “as I said, then, I have secured a ride to Dalroth at 0600 Standard, tomorrow. Where and when shall we meet?”

((OOC: Okay… might have taken some wee small liberties with some of this, Olan. Edit as you see fit. Based on our back and forth re: the comm.link, I’m assuming that Rool gives Caise a time (mid morning) and place to meet with him in Dalroth. Once the communication has ended with Rool, Caise will do his Jedi stuff – meditating, “training”, etc, until dinner time (he’s been considering not going to keep tensions between Jaal and his father to a minimum but he will attend if he’s asked)…))

Caise is penciled out, Dime and Mercury are probably the next closest to done, Damanil and Ziv are still very rough but I've now got a good idea of Mr Shadoran's appearance and have some good ideas for the Zivster, too.. I seem to be on a roll since Thursday or thereabouts so if it continues I should have at least pencils done in a few days.

As far as I'm concerned, I think you're playing Ziv just fine... I like the "twist".

“Outstanding,” Jaal exclaimed at Caise’s acceptance of his offer. “Don’t worry about my father,” he added, “Guests are always welcomed on the Darand Plantation. Well, at least, they are usually welcomed,.”

The padawan nodded faintly, accepting the man’s reassurances even though the feelings emanating from the others with him seemed to contradict Jaal’s optimism. Even without a studied read of Jeena and Umalad’s energies it wasn’t difficult to tell that the two of them had grave concerns as to how Jaal’s father might react to at least one of the wrecked shuttle’s passengers. Caise found himself mildly curious about the situation and, again, wondered if Trask hadn’t foreseen much of this before dispatching him to Taanab…

“When dealing with people, my young padawan,” the Master had told him only days before Caise had boarded the Kul Kura, “remember that you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures of emotion; creatures bristling with prejudice and motivated by pride and vanity.”

“I will, Master,” Caise had replied even as he tried to reconcile that statement with the teachings of the Code… There is no emotion, there is peace… How did what Trask said fit into the enigmatic turnings of the Jedi Code? The paradox had found its way into his meditations more than once in the past few days…

…if Trask had foreseen all of this, then, Caise decided that it would be best to try and uncover the elder Darand’s prejudices to some degree before they were introduced. He made sure to follow Jaal to his speeder in hopes of gathering information that may enlighten him further.

“A Jedi in our home!” As he followed the young man, the padawan overheard Jaal’s excited statement to the female who accompanied him, but he also felt Jeena’s uncertainty and sensed the dubious glance she cast his way.

When issues with Jaal’s father were first mentioned, Caise had foolishly assumed that the prejudices awaiting them on the Darand Plantation might be directed at Dime – the twi’lek was perhaps the most obvious non-human in the group, after all, and racism wasn’t uncommon even outside the Core Worlds – the presence of the ithorian, though, had led him away from that assumption before long. Caise had wondered, then, if Shadoran might not be the object of Mr Darand’s bigotry – the man was a soldier, after all, and likely still dressed in the uniform of the Taanab Defense Force – many people often harbored resentment for military types for one reason or another. Between Jeena’s mumblings to Jaal and the disparaging glances that she cast in his direction as he followed, Caise was beginning to wonder if the intolerance that she and the Ithorian had alluded to might not have something to do with him.

Shadoran, Dime, Lana, and Ziv had all piled into the landspeeder driven by the Ithorian, he noticed. Whether by choice (in hopes of continuing his discussion of repulsorlift modification with their host) or by default, Mercury, too, had found a seat in Jaal and Jeena’s speeder. Caise climbed in and took a seat next to the young pilot. “I meant no disrespect in addressing you as pilot,” he said to the lad after settling into the seat, attempting an apology for the slight that Mercury had perceived earlier. “Had I known your name, Mercury Saran, I would certainly have addressed you properly… and will do so from here on...”

((OOC: Room for backposting any convo between Mercury and Caise here… assuming a bit occurs between the two while Jeena and Jaal are having their “back and forth”.

As Mercury and Jaal slip into their gearhead conversation, though…))

When Mercury renewed his conversation about repulsorlifts with Jaal, Caise half-listened for a moment but was drawn away from the back and forth between the two when he sensed Jeena turn and look at him. His head swiveled, redirecting his attentions from the two young men to meet the girl’s gaze.

“Listen,” she said softly yet matter-of-factly, “as I'm sure you can tell, Jaal's father is no fan of the Jedi order. I'm not sure why, myself, but he makes no secret of it. He's a good man, don't get me wrong, but don't be surprised if he's not as friendly as his son.”

The miraluka nodded and offered a warm smile. “I had begun to think as much,” he replied, a little disappointed that she couldn’t provide more insight into the father’s intolerance of the Jedi Order but grateful that she had shared what she was able to, “thank you, Jeena. I shall remember that and do what I can to spare Jaal his father’s disapproval.”

The girl said no more but, biting her lower lip, turned to watch through the windscreen as Taanab’s landscape sped by. Before long, a group of structures, with one particularly larger than the others, came into view. "Welcome to Darand Plantation!" Jaal exclaimed bringing the speeder to a stop in front of the house. "Okay, everybody out. We'll feed you, give you a bed, even a hydro shower if you want one."

((Assuming “dad” came out to meet the speeders…))

Jaal’s father – who had been introduced as Gerald Darand – was physically larger and (more than just physically) more imposing than his son. In fact, other than their surname, Caise could perceive very few similarities between the two. Despite Jeena's concerns, though, Gerald seemed hospitable enough - while not overly warm, he was polite in greeting them and didn’t seem hesitant to offer the free use of his home. The miraluka felt a slight rippling in the energies about the man when he realized that Caise was a Jedi but it wasn’t the overwhelming crush of disapproval or hatred that he, perhaps, had been expecting; instead, the man seemed to become introspective for a moment, falling silent for the briefest of instants before continuing on with his welcome speech and the schedule to which he obviously held everyone at his plantation accountable. Dinner at 2000, depart for Dalroth at 0600, any requirements that the guests might have should be directed to a servant named Craln or one of the plantation’s droids.

Caise nodded his understanding to each of these things but, otherwise, made no immediate efforts to engage the elder Darand in conversation other than to express his thanks. “Your hospitality is greatly appreciated, Mr Darand,” he said before Gerald turned and strode away, “Thank you.”

The padawan thought he sensed a bit of disappointment or maybe disapproval pass between father and son at that moment but said nothing of it, right away. He simply watched as the larger man walked away, then turned to regard the rest of the people clustered around the speeders. “I’m sure we’ll be safe here for the night, my friends, but I think that it would be best if I were to stay out of the way until morning,” he said. His blind eyes turned to Jaal; “If you would, Jaal, show me to a place where I might meditate… and perhaps assist me in contacting someone in Dalroth? Is the city out of standard commlink range from here?”

((OOC: Let’s go with that for now… Assuming Jaal will show Caise to a room or some such, the jedi will ask him about his father’s “distaste” for the Jedi Order (if the opportunity arises, of course… backposts to that as necessary). If Jaal confirms that Dalroth is within commlink range of the plantation, Caise will again try to contact Leyan Rool. After that, assuming nothing else goes kaflooey, the padawan will spend the rest of the evening in meditation, resting, training, etc (out of sight of Gerald if possible) and/or conversing with anyone who is so inclined.))

No problem, Z... If I read the rulebook correctly, the Pilot skill covers most everything from swoopbikes to speeders to starships. Basically if it's got mechanical bits and it goes "zoom" your pilot skill should help you drive it... engineering (and craft) skills, of course, give you some knowledge about how they work, how to fix them if they're broken, and (where craft is concerned) how to build them.

By the by... I've got a pretty decent rendering of Caise finished (no color, as yet, though) and have rough-ins of the others in our party in the works (Dime and Mercury are the closest to being completed at the moment but Damanil and Ziv are starting to take shape as well). Maybe as I finish them, I'll scan and toss some character pics into the entries we've got for them.

The one called Jaal seemed to be very accommodating and very sincere in his offer to help the recently stranded party but, Caise sensed, Jeena and Umalad had some concerns… Not where offering assistance is concerned but, rather, with Jaal’s offer of shelter for the night and… what his father might think about one or more of us? Interesting…

"I agree that they will fare well in Dalroth, Jaal,” the ithroian responded to Jaal’s prior question, “I do not agree that your father will be pleased with these guests. He does not care for..."

Jaal waved the hammerhead off; "He doesn't like a lot of things, but these folks need a hand. I'll deal with father.

So, whaddya say," he asked, turning to face the Kul Kura escapees again.

The miraluka glanced at each of the others in turn, giving them a moment to make their own decisions and replies – a slight vibration in the Force warned him that accepting the offer might not be the best course of action for all of them and may result in finding more than just a place to rest for the evening but… “If it will cause you no trouble, Jaal,” he said after a moment, “We will accept your offer. I have business in Dalroth, myself, and, if it is as you say, I’m sure that that is likely the best place for the rest of my compatriots to get back on their own paths. However, if your father isn’t accepting of guests, perhaps it would be best if we made camp here for the night and made our way to Dalroth in the morning…”

((OOC: room for more interaction here if Jaal feels compelled to talk about his father and/or his 'father's predjudices"... otherwise, Caise is all for spending the night at the plantation and will accepts the offer... Maybe trying to get more info on the father during the ride back? ))

Subject: Introductions at last?

Apprehension mounted at the sight of the nearing dust cloud. Almost as soon as it was spotted, Shadoran and several of the others readied their weapons and moved themselves to more defensible positions should whatever was raising that cloud prove to be a threat. Caise, however, stood where he was and calmly watched as the disturbance drew closer… at range, the sight provided to him by the Force indicated only a handful of lifeforms in the midst of the cloud and, as the distance closed, the young padawan was able to sense that there was no intended hostility from any of the sentients who were veiled by the swirling dust.

“SoroSubbs,” Caise heard the young pilot identify the vehicles as the shapes of the approaching speeders became clearer, “probably R45’s… maybe 47’s?”

“I do not sense that they mean us any harm,” the Jedi said as he pulled the hood of his cloak away from his head. He turned his blind gaze on Mercury for a second, offering a faint smile; “Perhaps, as you said, pilot, these are simply farmers coming to offer their help.”

As the vehicles whirred to a stop a few meters away, Caise folded his hands in the voluminous sleeves of his robes and returned his attentions to the “visitors”. The energies of the three as seen by the miraluka identified the two beings in the lead speeder as human - a male and a female - and the somewhat larger being in the second craft as an Ithorian - likely a male, though it is difficult to determine with certainty - even before the windscreens were fully retracted.

“Hello,” the human male chirped, a hint of both concern and friendliness in his voice as he climbed from the driver’s seat, “We saw the crash – is everyone okay?”

Caise nodded in reply… “With many thanks owed to a skilled pilot, yes.”…

((Assuming that the wrecked shuttle’s pilot and other passengers responded in kind…))

“I’m Jaal Darand, from Darand Plantation,” the man offered before gesturing to the female, “This is Jeena,” then to the ithorian, “and Umalad.

You’re offworlders, right,” Jaal asked, a frown tingeing his voice after looking the party over, “That means you don’t have any real way around… where are you headed?”

Caise felt it best to let the others in the party answer first. While he did have his own mission to attend to, it was important to him that he ensure that the rest of those who had escaped the Kul Kura made it to – or at least on their way to – their own destinations before he left them and sought out Leyan Rool. The Master’s associate would surely understand the delay and Trask himself would likely disapprove if his padawan were to take any other course. He heard the male engineer from the Kul Kura introduce himself as Ziv then, as if unable to ignore Master Trask's remembered teachings, he lost himself in the Jedi Master's voice...

“You’re a Jedi, aren’t you?”

“Yeah," Caise heard Ziv reply in a hushed tone, "that’s a Jedi… not what you would have expected is it?”

…Caise had been recalling one of Trask’s lectures and, in this instance, he could not help but quote some of the elder Jedi's words. "For it to be so small a thing," he said, regarding the mechanic as he strode towards Jaal, "the tongue is one of the most difficult things in the galaxy to hold, is it not?"

He smiled then and turned his veiled eyes to regard the man and the woman who now stood at his side; “I am,” he nodded fractionally, “My name is Caise Jhorap…”

“This is Kol Nuro,” he continued, gesturing to the twi’lek whom he also knew as Dime, “and Mr Shadoran,” now gesturing to the TDF soldier. “The others were crew members of the transport we were on… I have, unfortunately, neglected to get their names… Other than Ziv, of course, and he has already introduced himself.”

((OOC: Room for interruptions, etc, throughout… edits and backposts as necessary… ))

HISTORY

Ziv Aland was born under the twin moons of Contruum, with a hydrospanner in his hand. His father was a shipwright on one of the orbital shipyards, making decent credits but absent from the home for the most part.

Throughout his teenage years, Ziv apprenticed under a Mon Calamari mechanic named Akou. Akou was highly skilled and ran a brisk business, catering mostly to clients with “rush jobs” and “special orders”. Naïve, Ziv remained clueless to his boss’ shadier dealings, which suited the squid just fine. Akou liked the boy’s creativity when it came to dealing with technical problems.

Around Ziv’s nineteenth birthday, Akou approached the young lad with an opportunity to travel the stars with one of their long time clients, Thom Dulo, Captain of the Kul Kura, a passenger transport. Ziv was familiar with the ship, with its captain, and even more so with the engine room chief, Lana. The two of them had often argued the fine points of the latest technologies. To be honest, Ziv had a minor crush on the woman.

Ziv has been working in the engine room of the Kul Kura for just over one standard year. His has a good relationship with Lana, though the two continue to argue. He is unaware of the ship’s shadier business transactions.

Description: Mercury is still a youngish kid - around 18 years old. He has dirty blond hair that is cut short, and no facial hair worth speaking of. He has brown eyes and has a small scar on his neck (from a flying piece of glass) that would look down right sexy on a rugged face, but on his baby face - it looks like he cut himself shaving. As his name might imply, Mercury has a passion for anything that moves fast - speeders, starships, females...

    Background:
Jarl Saran was a Speederbike Racer as a teen. He was actually quite good at it too. He won the Junior Nationals twice and placed in the top three within the Corellian Championships before he was 19. At the age of 20, he made it to first place in the Championship and was looking forward to heading off-world to compete on the planetary levels.

But Jarl's father became quite ill just before the games and Jarl was put into a difficult situation. His family needed a breadwinner to keep going. The prize money for the championship would do that, but it wasn't guaranteed. A friend of the family was offering a well placed position working in the ship building yards which was a guaranteed income, with benefits. Jarl felt a strong sense of responsibility so he took the job, thinking he'd go back to racing in a year. Unfortunately his father died within a month and he was left to support his family.

That was thirty years ago, and Jarl went on to marry and have three sons (Starn 23, Nato 20 and Mercury 18 ) and a daughter ( Biel 10). He makes a good income in a managerial role now at the ship yards and has Starn working there as well. Nato chose a different path, taking an administrative role within the Corellian Government (a junior clerk in the Ministry of Communications). Jarl had high hopes that with Mercury coming of age, he'd take on a job within the shipyards as well.

Mercury loves his family very much. He is especially close to his sister whom he played with as a child. They'd have play duels throughout the household, Mercury being the valorous Jedi and Biel being the evil villain. To this day they affectionately call each other "Jedi Scum" and "Vile Villain".

But Mercury was different than his brothers in that he had a wild rebellious streak in him and a need for independence. His mind was sharp as he picked up new skills and technology well. He enjoyed sports and events that tested the reflexes as well as skills. But when it came to work, he really wasn't into the whole honest day work for an honest day's pay. He liked to hang out with his friends and … well hang out.

In fact, it was one day that Mercury was attempting to avoid doing his chores that he made a discovery. In the very back of an old storage shed far from the homestead, he found a speederbike - an old racing speederbike that was covered in a tarp. It must have been there for ages.

His father never spoke to his boys about his racing days, so Mercury didn't realize the significance of the find. With the self-centeredness of youth (I found it – it's mine) he began to work on the bike until it was operational and then he started riding it. The thrill of the speed and riding took hold of Mercury from the first moments that he rode the speederbike.

He kept it a secret from his family for awhile, mostly because he wanted to avoid chores and work so he could ride and hang out with his friends. Besides – the speederbike was something fun and his dad would never go for anything fun.

Jarl reached an end to his patience with his youngest son when he skipped out on helping Nato move out of the home to his own place in the capital. That shirking of responsibility was more than the man could bear so he went looking for his wayward son. After some questioning and some checking, Jarl discovered that these friends of Mercury were into racing each other at an abandoning parts storage facility on the edge of town. Once Jarl heard about Mercury having a bike – he started to realize what must have happened. His son had fallen in with the wrong crowd and need his help. Jarl headed directly to the Parts Facility.

Meanwhile, Mercury was started to realize that he was in a bad situation. His friends had started out nice enough and he enjoyed being with them. They raced speederbikes, hung out and worked on the machines. Then they started stealing parts to enhance their machines, which didn't sit well with Mercury. Then they started challenging other kids to race against their enhanced bikes for ownership – so they could strip the speeders' parts and sell them. It was then he realized that he needed to get out and go home.

Had he been able to do so, he'd probably have met his father at the gates and the whole incident would have gone over smoothly. But the authorities had been watching the parts theft ring for a long time and chose that night to make the arrest. They came into the depot on mass and arrested all the kids just as Jarl was arriving. He tried to speak to people in charge but they wouldn't listen, telling Jarl to go to the station to make arrangements. Mercury saw his father talking to the authorities and assumed that his father had turned in him and his friends.

It took awhile to sort out but Mercury was released to his father with a mark on his record. The authorities had been more interested in the people in charge of the racket and Jarl had some pull with the community. Mercury came home and became more sullen and withdrawn. Jarl sold the bike and swore that Mercury would never ride one again. Mercury had big fights with his father, each accusing the other of many things and eventually he moved out of his father's home and moved in with his brother Starn. Biel took the move poorly, crying a lot and generally upset that her favourite brother was now gone.

Starn took his baby brother in, but insisted that he had to work in order to earn his keep. He got Mercury a job at the shipyard so he'd be able to keep an eye on him. Mercury worked as a loader in the junkyards and got to meet a number of people at the yards, including pilots. He found himself interested in their stories. He found an old flight simulator in the junkyard and rebuilt it to teach himself piloting skills.

One day, Mercury was asked to deliver some parts to a shipping yard. He was told to give them to a Captain Thom Dulo of the Kul Kura. He wandered around looking at all the ships until he found the Corellian CR90 Corvette. Mercury saw the hatch door was open, so he entered. A ship's hand told him to put the parts in the hold and wandered off. Mercury did so, but when he did, he accidentally knocked the bar that was bracing the door open. Only when the door was closed did he realize why it was braced open – the handle on the other side was broken and the door was locked from without.

It was two days after the ship launched that a crew member found him there. By then, the ship had already jumped to hyperspeed and was long away from Corellia. At first, he was considered a stowaway but the Captain believed his story. He offered Mercury a position on the ship for awhile, a chance to see the universe so to speak. He would let Mercury send his family a message and then he'd drop Mercury off back on Corellia when he was next heading there. He was open and honest that it would be a year at least.

Captain Thom became a friend to Mercury and a mentor. The young man enjoyed life in space, and learning new skills. A year passed and the chance of going to Corellia was put off for two years. Mercury kept in contact with his family, sending regular messages to his brothers and sisters. He did send messages to his father, but his father never replied. Feeling that his father has abandoned him, Mercury has decided he is no hurry to get home again.

In actuality, Jarl feels he failed Mercury as a father and wishes his son would come home. He can't find a way to say what he wants to say in a holo-message or a transmission, so he keeps on hoping he will have a chance to see his son again.

Slim built and wiry muscled. Years of training and fighting have left their marks on the body, making it tough and scarred. Most of his long red hair hangs loose from the back of his head, but in order to keep it away his strikingly green eyes, the rest of the hair is tied on two ponytails, one on each side of the head. At first glance Damanil melts into the crowd; there's nothing to him that really draws attention with the exception of his scarlet hair. But a closer look may reveal a quick-thinking mind behind his attentive eyes and the readiness to act in a blink of an eye.

    History:

Damanil Shadoran was the first born of Coruscantian military family. His father, a second generation Senate guard wished his son to follow the noble profession. From a boy, Damanil received the best of physical training available. All parts of his tutoring were selected with the entrance examination in mind. But all did not go as planned, as the boy at 16 developed a rebellious mind and failed the exams on purpose. The father, maddened by the boy's arrogant behaviour, drove Damanil away from home. Forced to take up whatever jobs available, he managed to gather enough to survive, but nothing more. Due to the strict law enforcement, he had to move lower and lower in the Coruscantian society and urban structure. Down on the levels where sunlight is never seen, the young man picked up jobs of another kind: putting to use the special skills he had learned growing up. Acting as a bodyguard, a thug, a bouncer and a debt collector, Damanil found he was good in hurting and even killing people. But born with an intelligence and will beyond that of those around him, he wanted more of life. Sealing his fate as a runaway, he stole a big pile of credits from a local crime boss, a former employer of his.

The money took him far away, all the way to the Hutt Space and the Y'toub system. His skills quickly earned him a steady job as a bodyguard of a young rising member of the Besadii clan, Dergon the Hutt. But he soon found the work boring. The pay was good, but there was not enough excitement. During the time he worked for the Hutts, Damanil learned of another profession. There were men like him, running away from someone, men who someone wanted to catch or kill. After being on the run for such a long time, hunting others for bounty was something he knew he would be good at. Joining the Bounty Hunters Guild took time, but it was not as hard as Damanil thought it would be. While working as a bodyguard, he had acquired a contact who was able to help him to get accepted to the guild. Being new and unknown, Damanil at first only received jobs that were relatively easy and badly paid.

Pulling off numerous assignments in a short period of time, he was noticed by a powerful trader who gave him his first big job. The merchant, though Shadoran wasn't aware of the fact at the time, was heading a large criminal organization. Not that it would have mattered to the young man, even if he had known. To him credits were just that, money, no matter who the paying custormer was. He'd never had any illusions about Dergon either. But unlike most crime bosses operating in the sector, the one whose attention Damanil caught with his performance, was not a Hutt, but a human instead.

It surprised him that the Hutts would tolerate powerfull being of another race on their territory. Probably the fat, sluggish creatures were using the human to further their own needs just as much as he was using them. Whatever the reason, it didn't bother him for too long. Marck Tomar wanted to catch a man and had chosen Damanil for the assignment. The redhead felt proud and happy to receive a proper job that would pay him very well.

Damanil followed his would-be-captive all the way to the Corporate Sector, but met a wall of security he could not penetrate. After a few tries to catch his target unguarded, some corporate operatives came after him instead and Damanil barely managed to escape. The target put someone on his tail and Shadoran was forced to flee to and hide on a remote world for quite some time.

In the end the other hunter gave up and disappeared, probably going after a better paying job, and Damanil was able to start living again. During the time of his absence someone else had taken up his last mission and Damanil was left without any credits. To make things worse, due to his failure to complete the assignment and more importantly, failure to pay the yearly membership of the Bounty Hunter Guild, his license was terminated.

For the last four years he has lead a quiet life, picking only smaller jobs keeping him alive and away from the eyes of anyone who might wish to find him. All the lying low has made the previously energetic Hunter somewhat effete and careless.

But now after half a decade of running, his previous employers seem to have forgotten a certain Damanil Shadoran and no one appears to be hunting him anymore. For the first time in what seems like a lifetime to him, the Corellian managed to find an assignment, which would pay relatively well. Tracing the target all the way to a remote mining colony on Telos, Damanil was starting to feel the thrill of the Hunt and life again. He intended to use the pay from the mission to get back into the Guild again. But once again Lady Luck seemed to have abandoned him and the target got away.

Caise is a slightly taller than average, sleekly muscled miralukan male. As far as outward appearance is concerned, it wouldn’t be difficult to mistake him for a human of the same age save for the wide, silvery-blue sash that is almost always bound securely over his dead, white eyes. Otherwise, Caise looks pretty much as one would expect, sporting the short-cropped hair style and accompanying braid traditional to human padawans of the Jedi Order. As of the start of this adventure, Caise is still not entirely comfortable in social/diplomatic situations and, as a result, is fairly soft-spoken and may appear to be very introverted, brooding, and aloof.

    History:
Caise Jhorap has spent nearly his entire life with the Jedi Order. That is not to say that he does not have a family or even that he doesn’t remember them – in fact, he meditates on them quite frequently. Had it not been for them allowing an old Jedi Master named Vantariel to take him to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant when he was but three years old, Caise would not have the life he does now, after all. In the sixteen years since leaving his homeworld of Alpheridies has immersed himself completely in the teachings of the Jedi Order and is convinced, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that this is the path he was meant to walk. It was a rare thing for young Caise to struggle with the teachings of the Masters who instructed him or with any of the volumes of text he had been required to absorb, though he did often take a great deal of time contemplating what might have been considered a minor lesson and seemed very deliberate and methodical during training. Those times when he did falter, however, seemed not to bother him to a great degree; if anything, his missteps only bolstered his dedication and determination. His fervent dedication to his studies and training served him well during his years among the Jedi younglings, he learned his lessons thoroughly and quickly and his progress from year to year was glaringly obvious.

His dedication to his studies, however beneficial to his skills and knowledge, was not without certain drawbacks, though. Caise was often so engrossed in his studies that he rarely thought to socialize with anyone aside from those who were present during his lessons or those who might have played a part in them, thus, self-deprived of any sort of personal interaction outside of the teachings of the Jedi, his manner became what some might consider brooding, painfully direct, and, somewhat aloof. It was his lack of charisma, in fact, that nearly kept the Council from allowing Master Trask to take Caise as his Padawan. They questioned his ability to play the role of diplomat or mediator and feared that his demeanor would possibly be counter-productive to any missions of that nature. After a great deal of reassurance and justification on Trask’s part – and promises that “the boy has learned everything else; he can learn… will learn to be diplomatic, as well” – Caise Jhorap was finally allowed to be taken as Trask’s padawan and complete his training as a Jedi.

Topic: The Tides of Fate Q&A
    Subject: Character listing

Since William Walkingcorpse (zombie_shakespeare) has asked about the existing characters in the game, I thought I'd take up a bit of space in the Q&A and see if I couldn't compile them all in a sequential series of posts for ease of reference.

In the party right now are the following characters:

    • Caise Jhorap – a miralukan Jedi Guardian sent to Taanab to meet with a collegue of his Master’s – played by Eol Fefalas
    • Damanil Shadoran – a human Bounty Hunter, posing as a TDF soldier, on the trail of a mark – played by Raven
    • Dime – a twilek Noble traveling incognito as a musician named Kol Nuro; is actually on an “undercover mission” to Taanab – played by Admiral
    • Mercury Saran – a young, human Fringer, until recently part of the flight crew of the Duro transport vessel Kul Kura – played by zombie_shakespeare
    • Ziv Aland – a human Scoundrel, until recently working as a mechanic/techie aboard the Kul Kura – played by YeOlde
    • Lana – a human Tech Specialist (?), until recently a lead Engineer aboard the Kul Kura – NPC

I'll give each character their own entry (alphabetically) following this one. I was only able to find actual stats for 3 of them, though, so if anyone has info for their characters that they'd like to add in, etc, let me know and I'll edit the posts as necessary. (Or if you mod/admin types want to add in the info if you've got it, I won't be offended, either)

Mercury, Ziv, and Lana may be at least "familiar" with one another as they were all crew members on the same transport. Ziv and Lana definitely know one another and I would presume that they know Mercury at least in passing.

    Subject: My assumption is...

... that Caise knows Dime's name (aka Kol Nuro) as they've been travelling companions for most of the trip to Taanab. He also knows Damanil's last name (Shadoran), since the treacherous bothan used it when all hell broke loose on the transport. As for the rest (Mercury, Ziv, Lana, etc) he may have heard the names used but hasn't really associated them with anyone in the party, yet(GMs discretion, of course)... hence the "well done, pilot" muttering from Caise... if he'd have know Merc's name, he'd have used it

BTW... great starting posts from both of our new players! Let's hope this adventure picks up and keeps running.

    Subject: Blasted roaming charges!

Even without sight it wasn’t difficult to determine that, even though the craft had served its purpose and successfully helped them to escape, the little shuttle wouldn’t be making any more journeys of it’s own. The electric tang in the air spoke of the ship’s condition even before Caise could step through the hatch and, though the details of it escaped him, he was sure that the craft looked even worse than it sounded. In his sight, an angry slash of darkened and disturbed energies identified the rough gouge that the shuttle’s landing had carved through what appeared to be a prairie. “Well done, pilot,” the padawan said, pulling his commlink free of his belt and stepping away from the heat of the wreck and into the gentle wind that blew across this plain.

He was vaguely aware of the conversations going on among the rest as he tried to contact Master Trask’s associate and, through their words and the palette of emotions he was able to sense, was assured that the shuttle was in as bad shape as he might have imagined. When his third attempt to raise the Master’s contact on the commlink failed, Caise allowed a frustrated scowl to play on his lips for a moment… Out of range, perhaps, he thought as his blind gaze slowly swept the landscape, or possibly the wrong frequency. His attentions shift from the Tanaabian grassland to the commlink for an instant, verifying that he was transmitting on the frequency that Trask had specified…

(OOC: assuming that the comm isn’t going to work now, but just checking to make sure…)

Nothing, the miraluka scowled inwardly even as he erased the frown from his face and turned to face the others. Resigned to being out of contact for the moment, Caise tucked the commlink back into his belt and rejoined the group. There had been some conversation about how to proceed, he knew, but he hadn’t heard any of the details. “What has been decided,” he asked as he drew to a stop not far from Dime and turning his masked eyes in Mercury’s direction, “we’re the shuttles sensors able to give us an idea of where we are in relation to the nearest city?”

((OOC: assuming some conversation takes place as to planning our next move… backposts as necessary))

    Realization.

    Apprehension.

    Expectation.

Before the padawan can trace these feelings back to any one of the party, though, the soldier pointed towards a disturbance on the horizon.…

    “Someone is coming,” Damanil said.

Caise nodded faintly and studied the dust cloud for a long moment. He would like to hope that this was a rescue or at least salvage operation in the works but, given what had just occurred above the planet, he wasn’t content to risk such an optimistic assessment without more certainty…

((OOC: If in range, let’s see what kind of results we can get from an Empathy check… If the “cloud of dust” isn’t in range at the moment, Caise will suggest that they take up defensive postions – just in case – and try the empathy when the target is within range (assuming they don’t start shooting before that)… ))
