Dapple and Char quickly stripped themselves of everything that wasn’t essential and took to the path. They would ride for couple of hours to get themselves close, and then move out on foot to scout out the town. They saw the smoke rising long before they reached the village, and soon the stench of burnt flesh, wood and carrion reached their noses.

It was not yet dusk when they arrived, but the town was in the shadow of the mountain, creating an artificial evening over the village. Dapple and Char could see that the Hevlorn was at the foot of the mountain, the temple was up near the mid point the peak and the ruins of the castle were high above. Sure enough, the town was completely destroyed. Buildings shattered and burnt from within while bodies of the dead were strewed everywhere, many in pieces. It didn’t take long to find the two beings responsible, as one floated in midair next to the other resting on the remains of the tallest chimney in the town. The one who could fly was a big man, dressed in flowing white robes over banded armour. He held an oversized halberd in his right hand that crackle occasionally with electrical energy. He looked like a comely human male, with long white hair and very fair skin. Both his robes and cloak flowed and whipped around as if caught in a wind, but there was no wind moving through the valley at this time.

The other being was very ugly. He resembles a massive human in body, with gigantic bulging muscles at least three times larger than Maximus. His face was long and extended, so that his nose and mouth were almost beak like. It was bald, except for a few long black hairs on its scalp that it grew long and attempted to weave over its head to create an illusion of a full set of hair. The armour he wore as a grey scale, immensely thick and tightly held together. He bore no weapon but the claws in his hands were so large that the two companions could see them from a distance. They were speaking to each other loudly, so that even from the edge of the clearing, Dapple and Char could hear them clearly.

“Come my brother!” the ugly one said in a voice like gravel churning, “Let us not tarry here any longer. There were women in this town that escaped. Let us seek them out so I can charm and seduce them with my manly good looks and sensuous long hair.”

“No Brother.” The white one replied. As he spoke, he paused dramatically and gestured with the halberd flamboyantly, “We must…remain here…for our master…has charged us…with guarding…this entrance. He will be…mightily vexed…if we…leave our…posts.”

“Surely our master would not deny me a chance to soothe the spirits of the lady folk! They do not know what they will be missing.”

“Yes…My brother…Surely it is…a tragic tale…but…we must…remain…here.”

“I bore of duty and orders. I need adventure, danger and beautiful women to woo.”

“Please brother…without your…strength...to…guide me…and keep…my back…safe, …I will…surely perish.”

OOC: Just need to hear from Char and Dapple. Moving in closer? Attacking? Going back to meet party?

You have no memory of the past night, none whatsoever. Gonzo. So you can not say whether or not you did these things or not.

However, for each and every one of you to be suffering the same effects - a wise man might think you were drugged.

But if you were drugged, could you have done those things anyway.

You may never know.

I have moved the story along but the meeting of the crew to discuss money and other matters should not be glossed over. This is a good time to share info and see what the big picture is.

Sam still has a message waiting for him.

Rocinante, Regina, Frisco, - 6:00am

The crew woke early with Willow having an early appointment, plus Sam and Fenris arriving home as well. Asher looked a bit tired, and when asked confesses that leaving the man outside just hadn’t sat well with him so he had snuck out in the night to bury the man in the earth behind Rocinante. The disturbed earth near the ship would not seem unusual, and no one would have seen him unless they came up real close.

It is the first time since joining the crew that the mechanic had met Trish. The first meeting of anyone new could be an apprehensive time for the recluse, but Fenris looks right at her scars and deformity with even batting an eye. Had anyone asked, Fenris would have told him or her that he’d seen a lot worse in prison, so not much fazed him.

It was good to have everyone together at the table again and the discussion of money was a lively one.

(Going to leave this open as to whether Sam wants to bring up what he has learned from Brigit. This is important so I don’t want to rush it, but I also want to move forward. There is also the matter of some rum and chocolate you could sell for profit.)

Willow dressed herself up for meeting the old shepherd and left with time to get across town to the temple. At that time of the morning, few were up and about except the inebriated trying to make their way home.

The Temple, Regina, Frisco – 7:00 am

(I am assuming that Willow is traveling alone. If someone does come with her, they will not be allowed to enter. The Tong will be polite, at first, but very firm on this point)

A stone-faced tong guard meets willow at the temple door, and bows to her respectfully. He opens the door to the temple and leads her into a room within, but then closes the door and returns to his post.

The room is oval in shape, and filled with a beautiful kept indoor garden on the left side there is a waterfall built in the curve of the wall, and all around the basin that catches the water are lilies and intertwined ivy. Two flowerbeds stand side by side across the room, with well-sculptured bonsai and miniature fruit trees. The alcove to the left has many roses, all different colours intertwined within their stems and small hidden wires like the bonsai. Hanging baskets seemingly flow from the ceiling, filling the air with the scent of wildflowers and well-tilled earth. Since leaving the Companion Guild house, Willow has rarely seen such beauty.

“It is the beauty within, that few see which truly shows us the measure of a person.”

Willow turns surprised. There, standing beside her as she looked around is the man she saw while crossing the grounds of the temple yesterday. He is a relative of the Shepherd, if not a son or perhaps a grandson. He had short cut dark hair and has a well toned muscular body. He wears a black Gi with a deep red sash across the waist, but bears no weapons. Trained to read people by a single gesture of eye movement, Willow senses great strength in this man - a loyalty that he’d sooner die than break. There is concern in his eyes, not fear but a desire to maintain control so that nothing will slip by him. There is laughter and joy there as well, but it is pushed behind the duty and responsibility he takes on.

“I’m sorry,” he says with a slight bow, “ I did not mean to startle you. I am Lao Tsu. You have an appointment with Grandfather.”

(assuming some form of confirmation)

“You are a very beautiful woman, and you have done me a great service by coming to grandfather’s aid in town.” Words flow from him like poetry. He pauses to look into your eyes – reading you as you read him. “Unfortunately, every Rose has thorns and some are well hidden. I cannot allow you to see grandfather without knowing you pose no threat to him. Will you allow me to search you or shall I send for my sister?”

Emmett’s Bar, Beylix, Newhouse - 11:20 am

Howdy, Madam!” he says in a warm tone of greeting, “Give me a whiskey please.”

The lady pulls down a bottle and shows it to Andrew for approval. It is not high-grade whiskey, but it isn’t rot gut either. She pours him a healthy glass full. “First glass is on the house Mister. What brings you around here?”

“You get many crew members from passing ships in here?” he asked the barmaid, “I’m looking for passage.” He says with a shrug and a handsome smile. Sipping the whiskey he tries not to make a face, he has had better and worse.

“There is always something leaving around here. Some of them can actually fly too.” She says and laughs heartily. “The Port Authority updates about four times a day, you can check with them. I have a link upstairs if you’d like me to show ya.” She says with a less than subtle overtone.

(assuming a no thanks, or maybe later)

He thanks her and taking his stuff and the drink with him he walks over to the men playing cards. “Greetings gentlemen,” he says and gestures to the empty seat, “Mind if I join the game?”

The men look at each other dubiously until Andrew produces the credit notes from his pocket, then the tension drains away easily. “Surly can.” One of the men answers. “I’m Darryl. This here is Bobbie and over here is my brother Doug. Playing straight draw if that suits you. Where you from stranger?”

(you have been dealt two queens (c&s), ace(h), a seven(h) and deuce(d))

Ragtime General Store, Beylix, Newhouse - 11:30 am

Dason walked as casually as he could into the store and placed the boots on the table and most of the credits he had found beside them. He looked at the very pretty brunette behind the counter and smiled as charmingly as he could, “I need a gun, and some ammo.”

Subject: You've been naughty......

You open your eyes and close them again in pain from the bright light. It is hot and you are kneeling in sand. Your head feels like it is about to explode and your mouth tastes like a drunkard slept in it. Not the best way to start your day.

Squinting, you look around. Armed men, all with crossbows pointed at you and your companions, surround you. You see you are wearing the remains of the finery you put on last night before going to the Sultan’s party, but they are torn, dirty and tattered now. On the other side of the soldiers you can see your equipment and weapons piled in a heap.

You can remember going to the party, held n your honour by the Sultan for defeating the bandits. You remember a toast to your bravery, and to your cunning, and to your swift actions and after that everything gets fuzzy. What did you do to go from honoured guests to facing an execution?

It all began in what seems like a lifetime ago. It started with Longos the Magnificent.

Five adventurers brought together by a common cause – a paying job. You were hired to enter the lost tomb of Longos the Magnificent and find his staff. All treasure you found as yours to keep as long as you delivered the staff of Longos to your employer. You fought your way through the crypt, fending off all sorts of evil creatures and denizens of the underdark. In the final chamber you discovered that Longos wasn’t really all that dead. You struggled against his magic but he opened a portal beneath you and you ended up lost in a desert, not even knowing if you were in the same dimension let alone if you were close to home. You wandered for days until a group of soldiers riding Pegasi found you and brought you to the Oasis of the White Palm. Ruled by Sultan Zoltan, the Oasis was a large paradise in the wasteland and a central trading post for many tribes of nomads. The Sultan was a rich powerful man and he fought you to be interesting with your different ideal and beliefs. You became his guests and enjoyed a luxurious life while trying to find a way home.

But the Sultan’s advisor –Visier Pfizer, grew to hate you all. He saw you as an evil influence and sought to banish you from the lands. But the Sultan dismissed his warnings and enjoyed your many discussions.

Then you heard of the bandit problem. A group of religious extremists called “Dervishes” were plaguing the trade routes. Visier Pfizer was in charge of dealing with these trespassers but was having difficulty as they moved in, attacked and left so quickly that they could not be caught. Out of boredom, your party decided to help with the effort, and by sheer luck, found a large grouping of the bandits, defeated them and brought back captives to question. That was why the Sultan threw the party.

The sounds of crossbow bolts being pulled back bring you back to reality. A man walks up to stand before you and opens a scroll in his hands. You wish the scroll wasn’t so loud.

“Know ye. By order of his majesty, Sultan Zoltan, ruler and trustee of this realm. Those foreigners assembled here are hereby charged with many serious crimes against the realm and the Sultan himself.

Whereas those accused did act in a manner most unseemly during a festival held in their honour, arguing and fighting among the subjects and visitors. That they did organize a camel race through the Sultan’s humble abode, disrupting the Sultan’s sleep and a private dictation between the royal mage and his personal assistant.

Whereas one member did chase the Sultan’s harem girls through his tents, holding a pair of silver tongs and screaming ‘Piranha Attack!’

Whereas another did organize a drinking game with the Sultan’s personal bodyguards that left them too drunk to fulfill their duties.

Whereas another female member did spread rumours among the Sultan’s wives of the ideas of personal freedom and rights.

Therefore, be it decreed that said persons are banished from our lands. Any attempt to reenter will result in immediate execution, with choice being death by hanging, death by fireball, death by lightening.”

The soldier rolls up the scroll and tucks it back in his belt. He steps a bit closer and leans down to re-tie the laces on his boot. As he does, he whispers to you, so only you can hear him.

“I must follow orders or risk death to myself and my family. But I cannot leave you to die in the desert. To the east, beyond these dunes there are the horses and supplies of five bandits. Take what you need, travel by night, sleep during the day. May Osiris guide you to safety.”

He gets up and rejoins the ranks. “Take your possessions and leave us now!” he says loudly. The soldiers keep their weapons on you as you gather your stuff. Thankfully they have not held back anything and you fine all that belongs to you. With no choice left other than the firing squad, you begin to trek eastwards, hung over and the heat of the desert growing hotter and hotter.

After a half-hour of walking you see a very small oasis with five horses and a mule tethered to a palm tree. The bandits lie dead nearby – the soldier was telling the truth.
