I have noticed that there seems to be a basic rule of gaming with certain Dm's

Olan - Kill the NPC, he/she is the bad guy

Alacrity - Kill the guy who is hiring you, he is the bad guy. Kill his assistant too.

Sorry to hijack the thread, just noticed a trend.

“I want to know what has you so fired up about that bracelet, Auntie dear,” Willow began,” The kitten has us all concerned for the trouble it can bring to our door, but you are spooked by the bracelet itself. I want to have a good look at it,” and she held up a pair of surgical gloves from the medical bay,” without you taking it away from me again. We’ll also need to talk….so spill, Trish dear.” With a determined look on her lovely face, Willow pushed her last two items over the counter towards the older woman: a notepad and pencil.

Trish shook her head and gave the “It’s nothing dear” look to Willow. But the doctor and former companion wasn’t about to be simply pushed aside.

(assuming some persistent pushing)

Trish shook her head and took the pad and paper. She scribbled down a few lines and handed it back to Willow.

“Don’t be asking me. It’s bad news. Trust me.”

Willow handed the pad back, “That may work on Asher or the boys Auntie Dear, but not on me. Give.”

Trish grimaced in a mixture of anxiety and frustration. With her facial scarring, it was quite hideous to see. She wrote a few more lines down.

“I made a promise. I won’t break it.”

“Hon, who are you gonna betray out here in the black with you telling me?”

“You know there are eyes and ears everywhere. Trust me, if you go looking into the abyss, it will reach out and pull you in.” Trish wrote.

“Can I at least examine the bracelet or should I get the captain to get it for me? You know I can.”

Trish’s eyes widen into the “you wouldn’t” look, but was faced with the “yes I would” from Willow. A few moments of silence passed between the two ladies and finally Trish went to the stockpot and brought out the necklace. She grabbed the pad and wrote emphatically “You and Me only. Not the boys.”

“Our secret Auntie, I swear.” Willow donned her gloves and took the bracelet. “Want to give a girl a hint as to what I’m looking for?”

Trish put the pad down. She mouthed a word to Willow, slowly and dramatically so the doctor could perceive what she would have said if she had a voice.

Dreamdrowse

Willow knew of it, everyone had heard of it. It was a “recreational” drug, banned on all the planets. It created a euphoric hallucination filled dream like state in the user that was more real than real (picture heroin, ecstasy and MMORPG rolled into a drug) combined. Highly addictive, in fact one or two uses was usually enough to suck a person into the world for good. Despite the officials constantly battling to eliminate the drug – it kept right on popping up. No one knew how the manufacturers’ kept on moving pass the authorities. So what did this bracelet have to do with it?

Subject: Odd how the darkness always makes us whisper

OOC – As usual I kept the conversation to a minimum to let you add you own. Feel free to change anything that I had your character say if you feel it was out of line.

Rocinante Cockpit

“All right, Sam,” Wyatt said after a moment, “Take us in.”

“Aye-firmative,” Dash replied, firing a quick and hopefully hidden burst from a pair of maneuvering thrusters to align Roc’s attitude to the most promising of the patrol gaps, “Hush-a-bye an’ say goodnight, afore ya knows it we’re outta sight.”

Rocinante moved closer to the alliance ships, with Dash steering her towards the gap between the Cruiser and Destroyer, Wyatt running shotgun on co-pilot.They had done these things before and Wyatt and Sam had a system to running silent. Kora even wired a switch into the pilot console that shut down the pulse beacon and reduced the engine noise. Sam dearly wished the mechanic was here to monitor the engines but they’d have to rely on Asher to keep an eye on things.

Neither of the big ships would waste the resources to be doing long range scans. If this was a military operation, things would be different but this was the Mining Consortium flexing its political muscle to try and squeeze dry another independent operator. No doubt some first command captain or someone who pissed off someone in high command was stuck with this duty.

At least, that was what Wyatt and Sam were banking on. Fortune smiles upon the ship and crew as they reach the danger zone – another Firefly transport was detaching from the Patrol Ship and flying towards Regina.

Sam realized the opening and pushed more speed out of the engines, hopefully without creating an energy blip on someone’s screen.

“Kid. Gonna need some more juice in the mains.” Sam called back thtough the comm.

Back in the engine room Asher was feeling a bit nervous. He had done silent running before but always with Kora’s watchful eye to correct him. He was sure of his abilities though, it was just that if something went wrong, then no doubt Dash would be all over him for it. The young man moved the lever a single clip at a time, watching the gauges as he did. He was rewarded with a slight jolt and a faster spin on the drive.

“Nothin’ to it Dash” Asher called back.

Sam got the power he needed and quietly too. Kid was doing a good job back there. Pulling the Rocinante into a slow spin to slide the other firefly between it and the Cruiser, Sam was effectively hiding in the shadow of the other ship.

Victorious Heavy Cruiser – Main Bridge

Do you want to come back to my place she said. Could have told me you were the high commander’s wife. Next thing I know I’m running a dodge duty in the boonies. Next time, we go back to my room

“Commander?”

Commander Yin rolled his eyes as he broke out of his painful reminiscing and turned on his heels, “Yes, Ensign Carstairs?”

“I have a strange reading on the transport that was just cleared by Redoubtable sir.”

“If it was cleared Ensign, why are you bothering me?”

The Ensign stammered, “Ummm….Well … Ummmm”

Yo Hua Kwai Suo (Talk now and quickly) Carstairs!”

“There were two of them, Commander. For a moment there were two of them”

“Two ships Ensign?”

“Well there is one now. Sir.”

“Which is it? One or two?”

“Ummm… I’m not sure sir.”

Firefly Transport Seka, Cockpit

“Cap! We got a tick on our belly.”

“Yep. I hears the proxy go there for a second. You see it yet?”

“No Cap. Whoever it is, he’s as smooth as silk across a Ma Tze’s (whore’s) butt.”

“Smuggler. Roll an Ivan on him, let the feds deal with him”

“Hold on a Sec there Captain.” The pilot and captain of the ship turned around to see their passenger standing in the doorway – not their only passenger actually, but the most important one by far..

“You got a problem JW?” Captain asked congenially.

“That smuggler. Might be something else. Actually I am kinda hoping it is, and it would be to your boys’ benefit if they slip on by like an old love of mine.”

“How so?”

“If it is what I think, that is yours’ and mine meal ticket, boys.” JW smiled, “Can you help them”

Rocinante Cockpit

Sam swore under his breath. He zigged when he should have zagged and came too close to the other ship. If he didn’t set off a proximity alarm, that ship was flying blind.

Wyatt quickly compensated for the swerve and they were back in the shadows again. All they could do was keep moving and wait to see if anyone noticed them.

Victorious Heavy Cruiser – Main Bridge

“Commander! There it is again! For a moment there were two ships!”

“Run a diagnostics on your station Carstairs. Ensign Jenkins, did you get anything from that ship?”

‘No Commander, but …”

“Commander! I have run a diagnostic and everything checks out.”

Firefly Transport Seka, Cockpit

“We could stall, Captain. Develop some messy engine troubles. Spew a back draft across the black. It would mean that Feds would come and detain us again though.”

“They’ve waited a while for me; they can wait a bit more. I’d be much obliged Captain”

The captain looked to his passenger and back to the Pilot. “All right then, tell Willie to make it so and do it fast. I want the place to look like hell broke loose when them Feds come on board.”

Rocinante Cockpit

Rocinante was close, so very close. Another ten minutes or so and they be past the point of detection.

The Victorious lit up the long range sensors. Warning lights flashed across the board.

“We’re humped!” Sam cried out, preparing to flip the engines to full speed and run for it. Then something unexpected happened. The ship that they were shadowing suddenly slowed and began to spin while spewing out fuel vapours. As it did the warning lights stopped as the trail disrupted the sensor waves.

Knowing an opportunity when he saw one, Dash pushed the engines up to speed and made a straight line toward Regina and the Frisco Port Authority. There is no doubt on either of their minds that the sudden “accident” probably saved their hides.

As you hit atmo, you receive an enthusiastic wave signal for the surface. “This is the Frisco Port Authority! Gau Guhn! (literally “high Pole” – woohoo! or awesome) The whole town’s turned out to greets you. There’s a band and everything. Mr. Blake is hopin’ you’ll make a speech when you land – you know, to get everyone’s spirit up and all. You are cleared to land on Pad One. See you in the world!”

The transmission ends.

Victorious Heavy Cruiser – Main Bridge

“Commander, the Transport seems to be developing engine problems now.”

“Which one?” the Commander asked dryly.

“Ummm….”

“Never mind Carstairs! Your equipment detected the malfunction and you misread it. You made me waste valuable time and energy on an unnecessary sensor sweep. You will dismantle your station and check every circuit and connection for the defect until you find the problem, Carstairs, and you are not dismissed until you are done.”

“But there are thousands of…”

“DID YOU HEAR ME CARSTAIRS!!!!!!”

“Yes Sir. Right Away Sir!”

Note -another post for Willow and Trish will be coming.

Arien in the lead, the party follows behind, stealth abandoned in the haste to save Alloryn. Char and Maximus follow with weapons at ready, Valentine and Jal exchange glances and a few words at the absurdity of the situation but join the fray. Even the cautious Kilgim and the overwhelmed Dapple follows suit behind the brave Knight. For this was a day of deeds, and if the bards were to sing of this charge, they would lift their heads high to praise the courage and bravery of the moment, if not the complete lack of wisdom in the action.

Through the broken doorway and north towards the main Keep, Arien does not bother to so much open the doors but to bash them open with foot and shield. The ease of which he does this speaks poorly of the Keep’s construction. Continuing at a rapid pace, you pass two doors, one on either side near the centre of the hallway. Arien ignores them, but the more cautious Char and Dapple peer inside the doors to make sure nothing will take them from behind. On the left is a kitchen, the hearth still hot enough to feel from the doorway and on the right the dining hall, a messy shambles. Both rooms are empty of guards or people and appear to have been abandoned in haste.

The door at the end of the hallway dies an ignoble death at the hands of Arien’s boot. Inside is the former recreation room of the tower, and the stairways upwards. The room is Spartan, with a few chairs and a long wooden table near the stairwell. The walls are bare and have patterns of mold and decay upon them.

Five imperial soldiers are also in this room, another stands on the stairs above the men, apparently giving instructions until you came barging into the room. They move fast, almost inhumanly so. Four draw their small hand held crossbows as the fifth flips the table over to provide cover. The fifth one on the stairs shouts upstairs for aid while reaching to something around his neck.

OOC: It’s everyone’s favourite time – Combat. Neither side is surprised, so it comes down to initiative – do you feel lucky? For the record there are 6 greens, one is a commander. Three are moving for the cover of the table, one is moving to flank you on left, another on the right, the commander is on the stairs.

Please give me enough action to run more than one round of combat.

1. Asher. The kid has more skills in the engine room than he admits to, so get his ass in the can.

2. No mods required. I assume that you would have the running silent adjustments down pat by now, in fact Kora probably would have wired them into a single switch in the cockpit. As to shadowing, that is pure piloting and balls -which Dash has by the bucketful.

3. Yes you can help but not directly. Acting as co-pilot is an indirect action so you can help but I will roll your skills roll separately from Dash and if he fails, I move to yours. If you succeed, then you are fine, if you fail then ... well then the chips fall where they may.

Hope that helps. I am ope to any other suggestions as well. You don't only have to take my options. Especially since y'all seem to be a mite twitchy about the GM's motives.

Why do all my players become so paranoid, I don't know.

Topic: Voyages of the Rocinante - Firefly RPG QnA
Subject: Thoughts

I would like to get some idea of how you wish to run the blockade. I would like to do the post this weekend so please sound off.

As Roc approaches the three Alliance ships, you will see a Firefly class ship that is spacedocked to the patrol ship. As you get closer, the dock is released at the firefly starts to go on its way to the planet.

Now there are any number of ways to get past the blackade. Some suggestions are:

Silent running, drift through a hole in their patrol pattern and pray. (FORMIDABLE)

Shadow the other Firefly, using it as a shield to the sensor sweeps (a Higher level of FORMIDABLE)

Adjust your pulse beacon to give off the same code as an alliance patrol ship and fool them (INCREDIBLE)

Do nothing, and hope you can bluff your way pass and hope they won't search your ship (RIDICULOUS)

this is not the complete list, and I am ope to suggestions, heck I'll even tell you what the difficulty of any of your choices is before you do it.

For the record, Sam piloting Roc is a skill roll of d12+d2+d10+d10 (pilot+born behind wheel+agility+Roc's agility). FORMIDABLE is a 15-17, INCREDIBLE is 23-26 and RIDICULOUS needs 27-30. So Sam does have the capacity to fly, but adjusting electronics or bluffing is an entirely different set of skills.

The Message

Dash sat in the pilot chair, readying the ship for preflight. That was when he saw the light flashing on the communication console. He checked it out to find it was 23 messages, all from multiple sources across the Verse.

Tink He thought to himself and called up the decoding software that she’d given him. It pulled the files together into one and the display came to light. The familiar pale white face with black hair, and way too much blue eyeshadow came on and spoke.

“Hey there. Puhn Yoh You know what to do.”

Dash clapped twice, and then clapped twice again, wondering how she rigged a wave message for an audio code. She smiles slyly, with a look that would make a grown man feel underage, and continued, “Hey Sammy boy. Hope this fines you well. I looked into your shipment. Whatever it was, someone didn’t want anyone to know about it. You have shell companies going into more shell companies, laundering through government ministries that don’t really exist. Whoever was shipping it, was well connected. I lost the trail in St. Alban but there was something I noticed, well didn’t notice if you catch my drift. The trail hit every planet in the verse except one – Greenleaf. Kinda suspicious if you ask me.” She shrugged “but I can’t find a buyer beyond the usual suspects - Blue Suns and the Consortium. Ta Ma Duh

The image changes to another image of a newsreel. It is dated within the last two days. A small article blows up for Dash revealing its content. Apparently a Senator Kyle Tang was reprimanded by the senate council for the use of alliance assets in a personal matter. His Daughter lost her favourite pet, a kitten, while on Beaumonde. The Senator used his authority to authorize a military search for the cat. A lesser senator would have been stripped of title for such a violation, but Tang’s many years of service lessened the blow. However the Senator did offer to resign his position as speaker for the senate, however the senate declined to accept it. There is no mention of a bracelet in the article.

“There’s your search party Dash. Some people have more money than Dohng shee. Hope this helps.”

With that the image fades and the software begins to delete itself from the cortex.

The Meeting

Kora is able to deactivate the alliance signal on the bracelet before you leave, just so you don’t have to worry about something screaming “OVER HERE!” as you try to get pass a blockade.

Wyatt Spoke up, “All right, we ain’t provisioned for another mouth t’ feed, nor is the systems in place t’ deal with… that, “ the captain began. “Hair all over the place n’ such. What’s more is it appears t’ be someone’s pet gone astray, what with that fancy pretty about its neck. An’ judgin’ by the bauble there, I’d assume it was someone who took a position o’ like t’ the creature. So, we’ll put a lost n’ found poster up on the Feed as soon as we can… maybe it’ll fetch us a bit of a reward.”

(note – I had stated that trish took the bracelet off the kitten. So the kitten is san jewelry)

Willow really looked at the bauble, and her gaze sharpened when she noted the quality of the gemstones. Before she could get a good look, Trish told the bauble from her hand rather forcibly and carried it away. Asher then asked to look at it, Trish hesitated and then gave the bracelet over to the kid.

Willow pondered the implications of an open posting in the Feed and didn’t like what it could mean for them. She’d no reason to hide or go unnoticed, but she hadn’t missed Sam’s habit of slinking to the back of a crowd when official types were around, and the captain had a less than easy way with officials, too.

Willow asked “Captain, perhaps a discreet inquiry or two would be better for all concerned? That kitten comes from money, and money means Alliance power on Beaumonde, which is where I’m guessing we picked up our fuzzy castaway. An intermediary or two between us and kitty’s owner may be the way to go. Dodger should be feeling kindly towards me these days, let me send him a wave.”

Trish is clearly agitated about the bracelet. She hovers around anyone who is looking at it and seems to get anxious if anyone touches it for an extended period of time. She keeps taking it away from people and placing it back into her stockpot, even though the signal is now defunct. When asked what is bothering her, she just shakes her head and mimes about it being dangerous.

The Flight

The tail of the comet is fading behind the ship and with it goes the memories of the miner’s camp. Ahead of you is the Black, and somewhere a town that apparently has a powerful need for ICE.

Loading with ICE plus some fresh tomatoes and veggies for the journey, Dash takes route to Regina that will give you a view of any blockades. After a few days of the dull nothingness of space travel, Regina is comes up soon when Dash’s controls start to light up as the pulse beacons of the alliance ships are picked up.

Recog: Victorious : All2638648 – Heavy Cruiser Class
Recog: Redoubtable : All9287382 – Patrol Class
Recog: Renown : All6237828 – Destroyer Class

Attention all Ships. The transport or sale of frozen materials (Carbon monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and Methane) is strictly prohibited on Regina by order of the Alliance Council. Any ships attempting to move such items planet-side will be seized and the crews bound by law.

Have a nice day.

The three Alliance ships are in distant orbit around Regina, and any transport or frigate is being challenged, turned away or boarded. Dash’s trained pilot eye spots some immediate holes in the blockade that a good pilot could use to slip by. The Alliance is anything if predictable(Chwen) in their patrol patterns.

There is also the possibility of trying to bluff your way pass the blockade.

Dapple moves up the stairs expecting and ambush waiting, but comes across something else entirely. Where there should be a doorway that would lead into hallway that connects the two buildings now is open to the night sky. The roof has been partially destroyed and burns in places, the doorway is torn off its hinges and lies on the ground before you. The walls are scorched in places and you can see into the barracks where bundles and packs lie smoldering and at least a couple of green soldier lie unmoving.

As Char moves up to where Dapple is, the two warriors hear a horrible cry of pain from above. They see a burning body seemingly thrown out of a hole in the tower, near the top. The soldier plummets likes a burning comet directly towards the party and the stairwell. Rogue and Ranger deftly dodge out of the way as the body hits with a sicken crash and rolls to the bottom of the stairs to a smoldering flattened end.

For the party that hung back, it seems to be raining Greens. First one soldier, then another, and pretty soon you will be running out of enemies to kill.

Then, from the south, or the front of the building, a huge chunk of wall flies upwards towards the tower, directly at the hole where the soldier just fell. The stone chunk is obliterated before it reaches the tower by a flash of green fire from within the room at the top. Dust and pieces of rock come down upon the building and you are forced to take cover from the debris. Siege equipment? There was no siege equipment when you scouted the area and certainly not enough time to build one has passed. Magic must be being used to counterattack.

OOC: Okay people, decision time. Where to go? All the action has moved to the tower, but there are clearly some magic users near the front of the building. Most of the building remains that you are in, except for the damage where you are standing now.

But Tortles … they were all his now!.

Calling upon the power of his war axe, Magma launches himself against the leader of the Tortles. Hoping that by bring down this “Leonardo”, then the rest would lose morale.
