... True... but only partially

"There are people who would say so," Cindi says in response to Jonah, "and it is true that who we were is no longer important as 'we have been blessed with a blank slate'."

Cindi exaggerates her notion with a sweep of her arms.

"However," Cindi says sharply, "Personally, that is not the reason why I seek my memories. As of yet, we've done many things out of reflex. The accuracy, even if marred, of my shot, Chris's effective disarming of me." Cindi notably grits her teeth a bit with this sentence, "And likely other things I have not been witness to. My point is, these are latent. We do not consciously know what we can and cannot do. Memories are just an insight into that, providing us with knowledge of what skills we possess."

"Without that, we are, primarily, clueless to our capabilities. As such, if we are not careful, it would be easy to think we should have a skill when in truth we do not, and overexert ourselves because of that. Therefore, the knowledge of what skills we possess, as would be shown in our memories, is crucial. Do you not agree?"

JONAH

"Oh I quite agree, Jonah chuckles, and takes the bottle from Hank. ""It's just that what you're driving at really doen't play into this at all. I'm not talking about your skills or your aptitue. I'm talking you. The central core of you. The thing in you that decides if you're the kind of person to shoot someone out of acute paranoia and anti-social borderline personality disorders...Cindi...or the kind who steps in to save someone they don't know because it's 'right'...Chris."

Jonah turns to Chris now and arches a brow. "you really expect me to answer with you waving that at me? How am I supposed to answer you if I'm shot full holes? Besides. As Ol' Blue Eyes used to say, 'The best is yet to come.'"

Jonah reaches out and takes hank's chin, turning her head this way and that. "You'll be okay, Henrietta. For a while, at least."

"Besides," he adds. "It's not like she's tried to kill any of you."

...

Hearing Jonah's classification regarding her, Cindi bursts out laughing. Eventually she manages to force herself to stop, waving her hand as though to brush it away.

"I'm sorry, I find classifications and technical terms regarding one's psych quite funny. It's quite amusing, how through such terms, people think they can understand the mind and people's behaviours. Isn't that strange? People seem to have the uttermost desire to name things they do not understand, just to give them the illusion that they do understand it..."

Shaking her head, to clear her train of thought, Cindi returns to the topic of discussion.

"Hmm..." Cindi looks at Jonah carefully, "I see then. So, the only information you possess is regarding who we were. Even so, does that information alone not yield anything regarding capabilities? Why not say what we can do, based on deductions from who we were?"

"I do not understand your insistence on separating the two. They are irrevocably linked, as a flower is linked to its stem. Even if you have just the stem, you still can determine what the flower would be like." Cindii holds her hand forth, as though holding a flower's stem, and rotating it carefully.

"Or, is it just that you are incapable of determining what the flower is, and are convinced that alone, the stem is therefore redundant? Undoubtedly, it would be slightly difficult if you do not know where to begin."

Cindi sighs, now drawing a vague shape in the air with her fingertip, "If you grasp the outline of a void, it will gradually become clear proof of the real image, so long as there is something to go on. However, think about it. If you know the core, you can legitimately guess at interests and hobbies and so forth that would determine skills and specialties. Occupation also dictates other skills that are possessed. Aptitudes and so forth can then be determined, and then preparation is far easier, and tests to verify the existence of the skills could be thought out and administered."

"As for her..." Cindi motions towards Hank, shrugging, "That is now only something time can tell. I wasn't going to take the chance, however, given the circumstances, I cannot change the situation now. It is pointless to fret about past actions, as they cannot be taken back. The event cannot be reversed so as to never have occurred, is what I mean anyway."

Cindi looks over at Chris, "The notion is amusing, however, because he hasn't shown any reason to kill him, it is pointless to wave the gun around to see if anything will happen. At the very least, it would likely be a waste of ammunition."

"So then, are you going to come up with a real argument, or are you just going to admit you just won't say anything?" Cindi asks of Jonah.

MAD GENIUS

"I'm sorry, I find classifications and technical terms regarding one's psych quite funny. It's quite amusing, how through such terms, people think they can understand the mind and people's behaviours. Isn't that strange? People seem to have the uttermost desire to name things they do not understand, just to give them the illusion that they do understand it.”

Jonah’s laughter is a short sharp bark, like a master growing tired of his dogs. When he speaks, it’s slowly and patiently, as if explaining the concept of naptime to a toddler, but his eyes have gone cold, dead, and a stillness envelops him that makes him seem more sinister than any of them had imagined.

“For someone who has no idea what’s going on, you run your mouth more than you need to, Cindi. So why don’t you do yourself, and all of us, a favor, and shut the hell up. Right. Now. Please.” He drops his head a moment, rubbing his eyes as if suddenly taken with a headache. “I’m consistently amazed by the amount of wrong information you shove inside that head of yours and take as gospel. Let me take you through this one…more…time… and I will speak slowly just for you, and use small words so you can process it this time. No, the person each of you was before does NOT matter. Who you are now, the things you will learn about yourself, THAT si what matters. THAT is what will keep you from the death that walks this town.

If you think I have little practical information, then pay no attention to me. Later, when you’re dying in the fog, you can keep that in mind. What I need right now is for those of you who want to live to tell me everything that’s happened, everything you’ve seen, since you woke up here.”

He stares into each face, noting that Delilah appears to be going into shock, and then back at Cindi.

“Don’t you have a cat to check on?”

Delilah, shaking, turns her attention to Jonah. "There's no need for that. Who do you think you are that you can talk to people that way?"

And Jonah regards her, seemingly distracted. His eyes fall on her scars, and as if she can feel the weight of his stare, she shoves her hands in her back pockets as his lips turn slightly, in a failure of a smile. "Same sweet, brave Delilah," he sighs. "Just like when we met."

"I'm sure you've all seen the Darkness? And by now you've figured out that it can be turned on and off, like a lightswitch, by doing certain things.

Well, there's something I need that I can't get to on my own. I need you to bring it to me. There's something I need to do to set this all right again, but that briefcase is absolutely vital. The thing is, I can't remember where I left it. My last go with consciousness was a little chaotic, at best. It was either the bowling alley, the hospital, or the inn. Wherever it is, it's important. As in getting you all back to where you ought to be kind of important. And you all want that now, don't you? Well, other than Josh. After all, we have some unfinished business to attend, don't we?"

Cindi just stands there, a cold, unemotional smile played on her lips. How pathetic. Cindi thinks, In place of an argument, you try to rely on verbal abuse, and only repeat yourself, as well as get yourself agitated over such a trivial matter. Not to mention, you merely change the subject rather than provide a true response. Oh well, if you are so unintellectual in conversation, perhaps it's better not to hear you anyway. Especially when you do not realize what exactly you are talking about. What you have repeated, and what I have asked, are the same in the end.
"If who we were is indeed irrelevant, as it should be, then perhaps you ought to act more like it." Cindi says sharply, "Your continual referral to past events and who we were in the past would serve only to make people curious about what exactly you are talking about, so if it isn't important, then you do us a favour and stop acting on it, and since I am so apparently different and unknowing, people don't need to hear me."

With that, Cindi sits down and pulls out her White card, her eyes misted over as she looks at it.

"Briefcase?" Chris had tried to tune out much of the bickering that was going on around him, but Jonah's referral to a briefcase snapped his attention back to the conversation.

"There was a briefcase in Jack's inn, under one of the beds in the rooms, I tried to get it myself, but for the life of me I couldn't pull or even cut it out from whatever held it beneath the bed, and before I could move the bed itself for a closer look, I was interrupted by those shambling things out there. As I mentione before, I'm positive Jack's inn contains more information for all of us, as each of us are listed in the registry as having stayed there..."

Chris had to wonder why those that claimed to have lived and grown up here would have stayed at Jack's inn, but the registry and photographs he had found pointed to the obvious; they had been there at some point, or at least someone who knew about them had been there...

"Jack's inn is the most viable option to start looking, and while I'm not thrilled to become your errand boy Jonah, if it'll help us get out of here I'm all for doing what I can. Now, what's in this briefcase that's so paramount?"

finally from me!

Why was this happening? Sweet and brave? Had they met before?

Even though she got Cindi's point, she had to admit the wierd girl was being a little dramatic and taking things way too far. Over-reacting, actually. So far, Jonah hadn't tried to kill them, and yes, Hank had been sick but why the hell would she have shot her?

Delilah pushed a strand of long dark hair from her face and looked at Cindi.

"Cindi? I think you're taking things way out of proportion. You're focusing on specific words when there's a bigger picture to see here. I think the point Jonah keeps making is that while it ultimately doesnt matter the KIND of people we we, it's important that we remember where we came from. That way we can try to make conscious changes if we dont like something we see in ourselves if we ant to be better than we were. Right, Jonah?"

She was trying to get Cindi to see that she was kind of obsessing about random suff and making a bigger deal out of things than there needed to be. She liked Cindi a little, but enough was enough. Her contstant bickering nad picking things apart was begining to get on her nerves.

When Jonah showed his teeth, Delilah had had to step in. It wasn't right to talk to people that way, no matter who they were. But she hadn't expected Chris to offer them up to him so quickly.

"I think the real question here is why can't you get it yourself, if it's so important to you? Wouldn't you go back to the place you think it might be?"

She listened, uncomfortable and uneasy, and stared at Hank.

"I think we sould aplit up. We were going to check on Hank's family, and I'm going to do it if it means it's just the two of us. But before we go anywhere, we're opening those lockers. "

One cold look

At first it appears as though Cindi is merely ignoring Delilah, but then her eyes glance over and she turns her head in one look. If glares could kill, hers would have done so. I should have known it'd be raised again. It would seem I'm the one who has to use small words. She thinks bitterly.

"Could someone replace the broken record already?" Cindi asks, grabbing something in the air and tossing it aside.

"Does look as though I need to hear it again? That fact has already been established in my mind before it was even spoken." Cindi says coldly, "What I was trying to talk about is something quite different, if not entirely."

"Heh, do you honestly think I am blind? I've already seen the picture, and that's why I move directly to specifics, because I don't need to talk about it. Do you wish to compare and contrast? In that case, here's what I see:"

"We are a group of people in an environment that can alternate between a stagnant nothingness, and a very hostile and unforgiving night, for lack of better descriptions offhand. We have little in terms of supplies as far as I can tell, specifically, food, water, and first aid. Physical shelter does not seem to be an issue as of yet, as weather appears rather stagnant so far. The current weapons we possess are rather inadequate in terms of capability to defend ourselves, either having so small a range that it risks counterattack, or having range but unreliable with limited ammunition. As of yet, we have no suitable transportation besides our feet, and do not know what skills we possess that could be of use at a later time. Also, we have little information regarding locations of such places where we'd be able to acquire any of these."

"Now, if you really want me to be quiet." Cindi says, more toward Jonah than Delilah, pausing thoughtfully, "There are a number of ways to do so. Simply not to acknowledge my existence, and therefore I will have no reason to speak, cutting out my vocal chords or otherwise muting me, and obviously, you can of course just kill me."

She says each of the options with indifference, at least as can be determined by tone and body posture. Regardless of whether she is truly indifferent or not, merely expressing particularly the final option without much of a reaction would likely cause one to consider whether or not Cindi is stable and sane.

HANK

"STOP!"

Her voice had left her before she could consciously stop herself, and the sound ripped itself free from her heart and her soul. Hank knew in that moment was the words, the tiny, meaningless words words words were forming teeth that were tearing into her flesh. Though there was little she could do to stop the madness, she was at the very least capable of changing its direction.

"Stop fighting. Stop now. If you're going to go, then go already, but for chrissakes just shut the f*** up already. Ever notice how he makes us all distracted whenever we try to get that locker open? Do what you want but i'll have no part in it. I'm going home. I have to check. And then I am coming back here. But first, I'm going to open that f***ing locker."

As she rises to her feet, she hesitates, as if expecting to meet some resistance from Jonah, who looks bemused by the entire thing. Getting none, she returns to the locker and starts at the one marked HP. It feel familiar somehow, as if she's meant to do this, yet as her fingers find the key and the key and the key begins to turn, she feels the rolling thunder beneath her feet before she hears the dreaded machina, those miserable gears beneath them all as they grind on in furtherance of some nefarious purpose.

On the heels of the grinding of the gears there comes another sound, a low clicking, as if a projector has run out of tape and the end keeps flap flapping. She tries not to look bothered. In truth, she knows it shouldn't bother her at all, that sound, except that there's something inside her that knows that sound. Knows what it really is

It's like the clicking of a metal gurney through a hospital where one of the wheels is bad.

The sudden realization nearly drops her, but she clings to the locker. Hank Preston knows that sound intimately. And it occurs to her that the grinding gears is a harbinger of something much worse than recoverd memory. She stares at the locker door and lifts the metal latch. As the door swings open, her eyes fall on the one thing that will make the biggest difference in the world. Though there are other things in there as well, she only has eyes for that thing, the one that will change things forever.

Her face remains impassive, not betraying for a single moment that which she has seen, and the act takes surprisingly little effort, seeming rather to be a throwback to her past that can not be completely recalled at present.

Fascinating

Cindi says nothing more, just looking toward Hank with a distant interest. She seems to be almost in a state of shock. Cindi thinks vaguely, before looking back to the White Card in her hand.

Well, that's fine. They obviously don't wish for me to exist, so I'll just wait until they're done before seeing if the one with my initials holds anything of importance or practical value. She decides, her eyes misting over as she stares at the blank card, imagining things that are likely even beyond this world.

Mad Genius Hijacks Players - PART ONE

Jonah smiles, and a sigh escapes his lips. "I'm sorry, that was unkind of me. I haven't been myself lately, and I'm sorry. Cindi, let's start over. Again." Hs he turns to sweep the room with eyes, his gaze lands on Delilah, and the smile widens. "And Delilah, my sweet brave girl. Since you've elected youself her champion, it only makes sense that the two of you are together again."

Delilah's fingertips graze her arms as she crosses them, staring at him with a curious mixture of fear, frustration, and familiarity. "I'll go with her if it means keeping her safe from you," she warned. The glint in her eyes was a steel and fire Hank wished she had within herself.

"Good!" he rejoiced, and looked from Hank to Chris to Josh. One was lost to him at the moment, he knew, but not entirely. She was in there, waiting. She had a plan, and he needed to see what it was because this one...there was something strange about her, as there had always been. She was different then, but that was so long ago now that he was not certain he could find the real Henrietta within her even if he tried.

Which left Josh and Chris. And his plan unfolded. "Chris, I wouldn't ever risk the lives of these beautiful women. Why don't the ladies stay here with me? You take Josh and bring me that briefcase, and maybe we can all get the hell out of her and back to our lives."

Josh looks to Hank, still swimming in a se of her own thoughts. He desperately wanted to know if she knew, or if what she had seen in that locker would reveal anything about him, but he didn't dare ask now. Not in front of all those witnesses.

It was Delilah who broke the unfomfortable silence first. She reached out to Cindi, tentatively, uncertain wether the woman would accept her offer of friendship or bite her hand from her arm. "It's not too far from here, right? Maybe your cat is fine. Would it be okay if I went with you?"

And though Cindi opens her mouth to speak, the opportunity is lost as Josh begins to cough.

It's not a normal sound. Neither is it healthy sounding, as small bubbles froth at the corners of his mouth. It's darker there, and Jonah sees right away that it's blood. JoSh's eyes have rollup in his head and he shudders, body convulsing, and every musle in the mans body has tensed to the point of nearly snapping. The exertion is clear, from the bulging veins to the grim set of his frame.

Chris leaps into action and takes him from the chair to the floor, prying open Josh's mouth to find he's already bitten his tongue, the source of the blood. Hank only stares through everyone, as if she were a thousand miles away, though sh is much much closer. She's close enough to reality to see that Jonah needs more than just the briefcase. She's close enough to reality to see that he has the answers, but wears the cheaspest of excuses to make himself look the fool.

Delilah catches Hank's eye and understands suddenly that something is happening here, somthing deeper than briefcases and kittens. They are being positioned, like puppets, onto the proper stage. "You have no reason to trust me," Delilah whisperd to Cindi, "but I believe we should go now, while everyone's distracted."

Distracted. Chris looks down at Josh, at the face rapidly losing it's color only to be replaced by a violet tinged blue that hits first the lips, then darkens the hollows of the eyes. He is fading, drifting from life at an alarming rate, despite Chris' best efforts and Jonah fumbles his way though a pantomime of assistance.

Josh's body slackens, suddenly limp, and Jonah drags Chris from the seemingly deadman.

In the silence, nothing moves. There is an absolute silence, anf Jonah breaks the spell by approaching Chris. The body is behind them, closer to Hank, and separated from the others by the table and a few chairs now. Hank looks down at the body on the floor and sighs.

Agreement

Cindi moves subtly, placing the card back in her backpack before grabbing it.

"I have no reason to remain here." Cindi murmurs toward Delilah, and although the sentence is vague, the tone implies an underlying sense of agreement.

Cindi fluidly closes the backpack and sets it upon her shoulder. "Let's go."
