Um...

Trish uses a notepad to communicate what can't be handled with a gaze, look, or gesture, if I remember correctly.

Working on a picture of the crew by the way. About 50% done with it. Not my usual style, but I'm hoping that it will be liked nonetheless,

Trish

If Ma knows sign it wouldn't help much as no one else does. There is a lot of mystery in her past and the captain wisely chooses not to explore that.

Whoa

Excellent posts from all. I think the reactions and scenes drawn out in the posts were great interactions and all true to the characters. So well done everybody.

Will post pilot audition beginning tomorrow so Celeste and Loki can join. I was gonna do it as a narrative but I have decided to do it as a mini adventure instead. Better to have everyone get to know each other.

Ideas.

I like that idea Roger. Sometimes the best adventure is character building in my opinion.

So, I don't know that Wyatt would be looking for a jack-of-all-trades of the bat (John). The idea of adding another crewmember would mean less profit for everyone, so Wyatt would need the idea that having someone who can cover everyone's roll on board is a good idea planted, or suggested. I was thinking that he was definitely looking for a pilot, so that won't be an issue, but it was suggested that maybe Wyatt run across John while he's working on the dock. Instead, how about Wolf is working on the ship, and John comes up admiring Roc (or something), and offers up a suggestion that helps Wolf out a lot. So, that's what begins the meeting as Wold reveals that we're looking for a pilot, and likes what John does, etc...

mini-adventure vs narative

I think a mini adventure sounds more fun then a narrative.

Bromern's suggestion is better then what I have come up with, I'll find a reason for John to visit the Roc but could simply be that as he is looking for work he is trying out with all the new arrivals in the docks. I wanted to avoid that as it is a bit similar as to how Sam joined the crew but if you'll fine with that then we're all shiny.

By way of something that helps out Wolf it could be something part mechanical and part technical that neither or them could work out on their own, or maybe the 03-K36 (Firefly model 3) has some inherent design quirk that John knows of (due to his status as a highly educated gentleman) that Wolf hasn't come across. The latter seems unlikely but I'm just throwing around ideas.

Fine with Me

I'd be happy to RP Loki's character into the game and to Wyatt.

I could possibly use it to reafirm to Wyatt that though I was willing to dispbay him about looking for Sam I'm still loyal to him and the ship. Or something like that

Fancy Locks....

I'd left the door open for Ash to meet John as he could be working in the techy shop that sold Ash his fancy locks for the gun cabinets. That could lead John to go look at the Roc.

I'll let Loki write the encounter of him and Ash in the shop if he'd like to go that way. Without to much dialog it could go along as he sees a young guy look confused over techy locks. Don't need to say they are Gun cabinets but he hesitates and calls them "tool" cabinets for "specialized" equipment. Something like need to keep nosey folks out and messy with the "calibrations".

The plan

The plan was for John to try out as pilot and something will happen that will allow him to impress the crew during a flight. I am thinking having him as more tech guy than jack of all trades.

Don't intend to overshadow what you had imind Roger...

How about this?

John is finishing up a gig doing something techie for another ship that has docked. He overhears a couple of dock workers passing by make mention of a help wanted ad they saw on the Cortex about a freighter pilot being needed. It was vague enough as far as skills required, destinations unknown, etc. One of the dock workers jokes with the other about some reason he'd take the job; how it couldn't be all that hard punching in autopilot destinations, sitting back with some entertainment, and enjoying the peace and quiet (maybe an ex-wife is hounding him, or something). The conversation could drift away as they are caught up in the crowd indicating that the try-outs we're happening now and he couldn't fly nothin' larger than a hover mule anyway.

Then John is kinda behind the gun, and when he arrives, maybe he is set further behind when he see's Wolf struggling with the external dock computer diagnostics system concerning the grav dampner. For some unknown reason Roc's computer system isn't recognizing the dampner's chip API feed, and Febris has resorted to relying on the free diagnostics computer owned by the city (a bit like trying to use AOL to enter the Matrix). So, John helps get things on track there and Wolf has to convince Wyatt to allow John to try out because he's missed the auditions.

You could still have John perform his cool thing with the whatchamacallit during his test, and he could have already gotten in good with Fenris due to his insight into computer systems.

Just what's floated to the surface as I've percolated on the subject. Use it, bastardized it, ignore it...no skin off my back.

Or even.............

Have John make in just in time for Tess to give her flying test, something blowes during the test, Tess has to do fancy emergancy fancy flying as the Roc starts to plunge toward atmo. Wolf's working like a madman to figure it out but it's techie not mechanical. John jumps in, sticks a penny in the fuse and Roc lands safe. Or something teckier.

Now Tess shows off her super flying, John his tech and cool head, all in one swell foop.
