From the Monsterous Manual

Tann,
I found the general info on Elemental in the Monsterous Manual.

Here's the general info from the Monsterous Manual:

Elementals are sentient beings that can possess bodies made of one of the four basic elements that make up the Prime Material plane -- air, earth, fire, or water. They normally reside on an elemental Inner Plane and will only be encountered on the Prime Material plane if they are summoned by magical means. (See Manual of the Planes for more information on the nature of the various elemental planes.)

Each elemental must adopt a shell in the Prime Material composed of the basic element it represents and once this shell is destroyed, the elemental will return to its native plane.
While there are many more powerful and more intelligent residents of the elemental planes, the common elemental is the easiest to contact, and therefore the most frequently summoned.

Their magical nature gives elementals great protection from attacks on the Prime Material plane. Elementals are not harmed by any nonmagical weapons or magical weapons of less than +2 bonus. Creatures with under four Hit Dice and without any magical abilities cannot harm an elemental either. (Magical abilities include such characteristics as breath weapons, poisons, paralysis, or even being immune to normal weapon attacks.) Orcs, for example, are powerless against a conjured elemental unless one happens to possess a weapon with +2 or better bonus to hit.

Though elementals do enjoy protection from many nonmagical attacks in the Prime Material plane, like all extraplanar and conjured creatures, elementals are affected by protection from evil spells. An elemental cannot strike a creature protected by this spell and must recoil from the spell's boundaries. However, the elemental can attack creatures protected by the spell as long as it doesn't touch them. For example, a fire elemental could set the ground on fire around the creature and wait for the blaze to spread.

Each of the four types of common elemental has its own particular strengths and weaknesses, attack modes and method of movement, depending on its plane of origin. These will be covered individually, by elemental type, in the next few pages. All common elementals share one major characteristic, however. They are basically stupid. This low intelligence makes it difficult for the elemental to resist a magical summons. But even the common elemental is bright enough to know it does not like being taken off of its home plane and held in the Prime Material plane.

BTW, not trying to be a rules lawyer, just trying to learn and understand how to play this encounter.

Interesting

I use a combination of the 2nd Edition AD&D Computer program, which has every 2nd edition monster in it and the Advanced Dungeon and Dragons Monster Manuel published in 1978 and no where does it say anything about this shell.

Are you sure the manual you’re reading it from is a 2nd Edition one?. It could be 3, 3.5, or so on and they may have modified the Elementals as such. Check the date when the book was published anything after 1998 is 3rd Edition forward as the last time 2nd Edition was published was 95-96.

And no your not being a rules lawyer after all I did ask where you saw it.

protection from evil

Odyson; the protection from evil thing is kind of ignored for the most part in Tril. Otherwise most of the evil creatures would be unable to attack about a third of the party as paladins and Cor radiate protection from evil.

Nope wrong Keeper

It's not a Circle of Protection but an Aura of Protection which is different. If you read under the description of a Paladin in the PHB it talks about an aura that causes any EVIL or summoned creature entering it to hit at -1. Where a circle of protection keeps them out.

Reason I know this for sure is that Teller brought the difference to my attention last week. If you look on your sheet you'll see it says Aura not circle.

Bad news

It is with the deepest sadness and just plain being pissed off that do to real life issues I gotta shut Trilogy down and even will be leaving the Inn.

Been a great 8 years 7 months and 1 day but thanks to a certain family member my life is now screwed. I know I'll talk to at least two of you in RL but rt now I'm too pissed to go into details. So have fun, eat lots of candy, and remember April days.

Clarification

What happened to her 2nd attack that round? Did she just lose it? Why? Even if she lost her sword she should still get the attack yes?

Also, how does one get inside an opponent's shield when it is held so close to the body during battle? I want to try that next time myself.

p.s. Oh one more thing, wouldnt a sword through your body be something of a critical hit? Shouldnt that guy be dead? I wouldnt think shoving a long blade though your body would be a minor injury, eh?
