Not sure who should toss a coin first, I doubt it would matter much. If it is trapped, the same thing would happen to any of us that tried. Hopefully we won't end up in cages in the mud room.
As far as what coin and what wish, perhaps a trial of copper first, then silver, then gold, all with the same simple wish of something brought to us from elsewhere, to see if there's any correlation between type of coin and quality of wish. If there is, then we would know to use whichever got the best result (may not always be gold!), and decide if we want to wish ourselves back to our own time, and if we wish to do it before or after we check everything else out.
However, wishes are a strange and sometimes more dangerous thing to encounter than a frost giant lich. We should be VERY cautious on how we use the wish (if wishes are granted at all!), and we must be very careful on how we word it.
I like the idea of legend lore or any other spell that might give us some information.
Is the next level what we are really after?
Should we start with something less significant?
Also, and I think more importantly, wishes (if such get granted, who knows?) as has been stated are dangerous. What are the possible side effects of asking "to be shown" the way to the next level? I hate to give Tann ideas, but quite frankly I think he has enough already. But if, as I suspect, the path to the next level is through those sarcophagi then I could see "being shown" meaning that the person making the wish suddenly appears inside one of the boxes. They would see it. Is there a safer way to phrase things?
Could we wish "to be given knowledge of" the information?
"to have a line appear guiding us towards the correct path?"
Also, should we try to toss in a coin without making a wish first?
It is also possible that if this is a wishing fountain that each person only gets one wish.
And finally, if this thing does grant wishes, could we just use it to get back to our own time?
As I sat thinking about the wish conundrum I realized I had a bigger question. Where and when exactly are we trying to get back to? To what purpose? We disappeared in a flash and our characters know nothing of what Tann told us about what came next. For all Lothor knows we successfully destroyed the castle and the future is safe. Well sort of, additional parts of the quest remain - parts I'm a bit unclear of since I came in late and need to go back and reread the summary.
But the point is - where and when are we trying to get to? If we could just wish ourselves (or use the magic with Alanon's help) what would we do? Back to the castle? Do we (the characters) know throwing in the gems was a mistake? If we are looking for Allanon's "daughter" - where and when do we go? When we get back, what is our goal? When I joined the game it was to destroy the castle, but now?
We agree on going to the fountain room but no so what to do and how to do it.
So I recommend that we let Lothor set the the play in action. Since he was most apprehensive of magic but always believed in luck he could feel a wishing well could help the party and takes his action first.
We then follow his lead or Tann's action on his lead.
First, a welcome to Brennus Stagborn - thanks for taking over Roan, you won't regret it as Trilogy really is a great game. Well, you might regret it occasionally as you try to figure out what Tann has done to us this time, but overall the experience is a good one. Welcome. Also, please start offering up ideas as soon as you have them - I think we could use some fresh insight.
Second and so on, I wonder how many different rooms this place has?
So, it seems our dear GM has other plans for us. No fountain, but instead a throne room. I assume we will do the usual search. Are we going to do detect spells? Tann already said it feels like the sarcophagus room - which doesn't bode well. And that tapestry being fresh does point to an upcoming fight for those who feel like they missed out with the statues. Search, cast detect spells and don't touch the crown? what am I missing?
Well it's not like things go as planned in this game. So we now know that the magic of tower has some other strange effects.
Earlier we detected that the magic strength was beneath the main room and so far we hadn't found a way to travel lower in the tower. My guess is we need to fight out each room to reveal new rooms that may lead us to the next level.
We sensed a change so we can use that feeling to let us know there may be a new room.
My guess for this room is that the round thing on the throne is the trigger like the cages seemed to be the trigger in the statue room.
Welcome Brenn, we need the healer powers and Roan has some cool abilities and stuff. Playing an existing character isn't too bad, I took over Ulthok and made him my own. Just back read some to where we all meet in the last chapter to get a feel of what he has done so far but then play him as you see fit.
We use the Q&A a bit more here than in some games to coordinate our ideas and plan party actions. New eyes and ideas are welcome. Tann throws high level stuff at us because we have high level characters so expect unusual situations that require creative solutions. Read your character sheet to find all the goodies Roan has, they may be needed. Know that Tann uses all the 2.0 books, not just the DMG, PH and MM.
I'm going to hold back and probably see how you all handle things before jumping headlong into things. I'm trying to go back in time a bit and read what's already happened, not from the very beginning mind you, but there is still a ton to read so it's kind of slow going, what with life and all going on in the back ground.
